Assessing Bias: The Qualitative in the Quantitative, Darfuri War Fatalities and the Morality of War  [PDF]
Stephen Reyna
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2011.13013
Abstract: This paper formulates a strategy for assessing bias, and applies it to quantitative assessments of the disaster of war in Darfur [Sudan]. In so doing it argues for qualitative investigations of quantitative analyses. The strategy examines epistemic and political regimes with the goal of revealing the sources, the directions, and the forces of bias. Examples of bias are discussed to illustrate the strategy including, among others, the draw-a-person IQ test, questions about how old you are or whether you can bear children in Chad, and the US army’s Human Terrain System. Considerable attention is paid to US governmental biasing of its claims of war fatalities and genocide in Darfur. This biasing is shown to involve cherry picking, symbolic violence, and high-channel regimes of bias. It is shown how the bias assessment strategy may be of use in evaluating moral claims.
Neutrinos at 1%: a reactor based measurement of theta13
Reyna, David;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332004000700021
Abstract: past studies of neutrinos and the recent results on neutrino mixing have opened up many new possibilities as well as the understanding that neutrino mixing is very different from the better known quark mixing. the last remaining unmeasured component of the neutrino mixing matrix (ue3) also provides a window to understanding neutrino matter effects, the mass hierarchy, and the possibility of measuring leptonic cp violation. a discussion of the benefits and difficulties of pursuing such a measurement with reactor neutrinos will be presented. in addition, possible sites for such an experiment will be discussed, including a location in brazil.

Liria,Reyna;
Revista Peruana de Medicina Experimental y Salud Pública , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1726-46342012000300010
Abstract: obesity is a worldwide pandemic and children are a vulnerable group. in america, it was estimated that in 2010, 15.2% of 18 year-old children could suffer from this. obesity in children and teenagers has a negative impact on health and on the load of diseases at this stage of life, and later on in adulthood, having a negative impact on the economy of a country due to the rise of risks of chronic diseases, health expenses and indirect costs as a result of the disease. peru is going through an epidemiological transition, with unsolved malnutrition problems and high child obesity rates (10% of children under five), thus being one of the countries with a higher increase of child obesity in recent years in latin america. childhood and adolescence are considered critical periods because eating habits and physical activity start at this point; and because most obese children and teenagers will maintain those habits until they reach adulthood. for this reason, it is essential to seek strategies and interventions that prevent overweight and obesity among children and teenagers in order to improve the health conditions of a country

Abstract: the aim of this study was to review the assessment tools of children#039;s social skills used in latin american countries. the search was done using scielo, redalyc, and lilacs databases, 62 studies were obtained. in the empirical studies (n = 55) was observed a predominance of scales and refers to only one informant, with numerous brazilian works. the instrumental studies on rating scales (n = 7) share the dimension of social interaction within their structure, although some scales include some constructs that exceed the conceptual boundaries of social skills. we review the psychometric properties of the instruments and discuss their theoretical and practical implications.

Film and Ritual: epistemological dialogs between filmic anthropology and anthropological practice
Reyna, Carlos P.;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412012000200016
Abstract: this article discusses the dialog between filmic anthropology's procedures and methods and anthropological practice, with a focus on ritual, which is captured by the moving image in a more direct and fluid way. for this, the ritual of reproduction and preservation of cattle in santiago, a peasant village in the peruvian andes is used as an empirical base. as an anthropologist-filmmaker i will try to make explicit the relationship between the observed process filmed and the informant, combining two important epistemological grids: claudine de france's deferred observation, and clifford geertz's interpretation from the native's point of view. finally, based on this experience, i will make some observations about the use of methodological approximations from filmic anthropology in anthropological practice, between film and anthropology.
