Meneghel, Stela
Athenea Digital , 2007,
Abstract: This article considers life stories and autobiographical narratives as research instruments. It explains the life story method and its possible uses in the field of public health. It includes comments and reflections based on the author’s experiences as she did research on the life stories of women, families and individuals in vulnerable situations. The author argues that the life story method, as well as the narratives, enables both the narrator and the researcher to reconstruct their experiences and to the reinterpret the meaning of what happened.

Abstract: this essay, about the film the elephant man (david lynch, 1980), was written for a continuing education activity on cinema and collective health at unisinos (university of the sinos river valley, s?o leopoldo, brazil). it attempts to contribute towards the debate on health, disease and abnormality. the film, set in victorian england, is the story of a man affected by a disease that caused extensive physical deformities, which caused him to be exhibited at circuses as a freak. the discussion, inspired by foucault, covers three main issues: the concept of abnormality that became consolidated within the field of medicine during the nineteenth century, thereby defining the boundary between health and disease; the transformation of hospitals into standardized healing spaces; and care as a practice of ethical and political nature.

Abstract: by the use of a group of health statistics, this study classifies the health status of the administrative regions in rio grande do sul (brazil) for the period form 1979 to 1982. five classic health parameters were chosen according to the following criteria: accessibility to a hisitorical series of three years; necessarily part of an information system currently in use and having a high rate of factorial score. each parameter was weighed (cef) for "health level", "immunization level" and "medical care level". they were: proportional mortality under five years, swaroop-uemura, infant mortality rate, proportional mortality for infectious diseases and percentage of undefined deaths. the parameters were standardized by a z-variable and weighed by factorial score rate. in this way the final score was obtained for each administrative region. such a score is a fusion of five parameters in one, making the data comparison easier. the administrative regions were classified in seven groups. it was possible to identify regions where investment is needed, i.e., where health levels are low. apart from this study's principal purpose, it was found that the regions with the lowest health levels are characteristically agricultural, with large rural properties and marked distinctions in social class. it is suggested that the parameters should be used as instruments in a model for epidemiological surveillance which would show the present situation of the health/disease ratio in a population.

Abstract: this paper analyzes a storytelling workshop, an intervention based on the referential elements of oral narratives, held at an ngo in s?o leopoldo, rio grande do sul state, brazil. the workshop was divided into three different stages: narration of a story with a focus on gender violence, a discussion based on the narrative, and an activity with body painting. the theoretical framework was based on discursive practices, and when workshop participants' discourse was assessed, at least two interpretive repertories were identified: one based on the gender category and the other on everyday life and recollections from participants' life stories. there was also considerable variety in the arguments, manifested in the contradictions and incongruence permeating the discourse. narratives used as tools to work with abused women (especially for public health interventions) have received little attention thus far. in the current study, stories were analyzed as possible strategies to deal with gender inequalities, a powerful analytical tool for evaluating public health actions.

Abstract: objective: to assess female homicide rates due to aggression according to sociodemographic and health indicators. methods: ecological study on female homicides due to aggression in brazil between 2003 and 2007. information on 19,459 deaths were obtained form the brazilian mortality database. standardized female homicide rates due to aggression were correlated with 28 socioeconomic, demographic and health indicators, using pearson's correlation test. multiple linear regression was performed including variables with p < 0.20 and excluding those with multicollinearity. results: the standardized female homicide rate due to aggression was 4.1/100,000 during the study period. after adjustment, three variables remained significantly associated with female homicides: birth rate (p = 0.072), percentage of evangelicals (p = 0.019) and male homicides due to aggression (p < 0.001). the model had a predictive power of 69% (r2 = 0.699). the brazilian states of espírito santo, pernambuco, mato grosso, rio de janeiro, rond?nia, alagoas, mato grosso do sul, roraima e amapá showed the highest rates during the study period. conclusions: the female homicide rates due to aggression were high in brazil and varied by region. the association with male homicides due to aggression stresses the importance of reducing structural violence to protect women against violence.

Abstract: objective: to investigate the prevalence and profile of gender violence (physical, psychological, and sexual) perpetrated against women by current or former intimate partners. methods: this is a cross-sectional study carried out at a primary healthcare unit in the city of porto alegre, southern brazil. our sample comprised 251 women aged 18-49 years who attended the healthcare unit between october and november 2003. data were collected by means of a questionnaire and double-entered into a electronic spreadsheet. we carried out univariate and bivariate analyses and the chi-square test. results: the prevalence of the three types of violence were: psychological (55%, 95% ci: 49-61), physical (38%; 95% ci: 32-44), and sexual (8%; 95% ci: 5-11). variables significantly associated with the three types of violence included woman's age (psychological: p=0.004), woman's schooling (psychological and physical; p=0.012 and 0.023, respectively), partner's schooling (p=0.004, 0.000), social class (p=0.006, 0.000), years with partner (p=0.006, 0.005), partner's occupation (p=0.015, 0.001), number of pregnancies (p=0.018, 0.037), and prevalence of minor psychiatric disorders (p=0.000, 0.000). conclusions: the present study found high prevalences of gender violence perpetrated by intimate partners among the users of a primary healthcare unit. such units play an important role in preventing violence against women.

Abstract: This research is a psychosocial intervention that uses the narrative as a theoretical /methodological tool in story workshops (narratives and tales). The aim of the intervention is to hear the stories of a Center of Psychosocial Care (CAPS) users and explore new ways to live with the suffering caused by mental disorders. The story workshops are a proposal to work with mental disorder, hearing the voices of those who suffer it in the daily. The groups occur in a space of learning, respect and listening. This space-time of narration allowed the suffering announcement and questioned about what is to be crazy in our society, since there are few social spaces where this event can be explored dialectically. In the six story and narratives workshops occurred in the CAPS, the mad held the position of the narrator, the one that metaphor his history and his madness. In the protected space of the group, the narrator could explore other roles and possibilities. The meetings were analyzed according to themes produced by the storytellers, pointing out the questions about the time, death, pain and madness. The storytellers shared experiences and found ways to understand the suffering, in a space where the word and the interpretation were moved, as well as the help and care.
