Abstract: Background/Aim. The beneficial effects of medicinal plants are well-known from the ancient times. However, expansion of phytopharmacy and phytotherapy occured during the last decades. Medicinal plants can absorb environmental contaminants from the ground and consequently may cause harmful effects on human health. Quality control usually comprises standard methodology which includes macroscopic identification and examination of active ingredients. Additionaly, there is a permanent need to control the level of pollutants in herbs, with a particular attention to the level of toxic metals. In this study we estimated the level of contamination by determining the content of cadmium (Cd) in the herbs of Hypericum perforatum and Thymus serpyllum collected from the different localities of the mountains Rtanj and Ozren. Methods. Herbs of investigated plants were collected during July 2005 from various localities of Rtanj and Ozren mountains. After drying, homogenization and mineralization, Cd content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results. The obtained results show that Cd content varies significantly in Hypericum perforatum samples collected. The lowest Cd level was found in samples from the one of Rtanj localities (0.25 mg Cd/kg), while the highest was observed in Hypericum perforatum from Ozren locality (1.24 mg/kg). Levels of Cd in the three of four investigated localities were higher than pro posed by WHO (0.3 mg/kg dried herb material). In all investigated samples of Thymus serpyllum herbs Cd levels were below the limit of detection of analytical method (0.2 mg Cd/kg dried materials). Conclusion. This work contributes to the issue of Cd content in Hypericum perforatum and Thymus serpyllum grown in localities of Rtanj and Ozren, and implies the importance for systemic control of Cd content in Hypericum species in order to provide safety of their preparations. Furthermore, regarding Cd toxicity, maximal permissible level of Cd in plant material should be evaluated and established concerning national legislative frame.
Penalty method for fuzzy linear programming with trapezoidal numbers

Yugoslav Journal of Operations Research , 2009, DOI: 10.2298/yjor0901149s
Abstract: In this paper we shall propose an algorithm for solving fuzzy linear programming problems with trapezoidal numbers using a penalty method. We will transform the problem of maximizing a function having trapezoidal fuzzy number values under some constraints into a deterministic multi-objective programming problem by penalizing the objective function for possible constraint violation. Furthermore, the obtained deterministic problem will have only unavoidable inequalities between trapezoidal fuzzy numbers parameters as constraints.
Media use among young people in Serbia

Sociologija , 2012, DOI: 10.2298/soc1202369s
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present how the electronic and print media have been used among the youth in Serbia. The analysis aims to show diverse modes of media usage in relation to the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the youth, on the assumption that age, sex, residence, education, occupation, etc. influence the choice of media, the contents that young people prefer, as well as the amount of time spent on their usage. The issue that prompted our attention most is access to different types of media (print, television and internet) because the media also represent one of the key preconditions of social participation.
From subculture to scene and tribe: Post-Birmingham approaches to the relationship between youth, music and style
Stanojevi? Dragan
Sociologija , 2007, DOI: 10.2298/soc0703263s
Abstract: The paper discusses the so-called "post-Birmingham approaches" to analyzing the relationship between youth, music and style. Three especially pertinent theoretical approaches are presented: Sarah Thornton’s research based on the concept of "subcultural capital", the concept of "scene" developed by Keith Harris and Will Straw, and "neo-tribalism" borrowed from M. Maffesoli and applied to youth studies by Andy Bennett. All these concepts are based on a critique of subcultural theories conceived and elaborated at CCCS in Birmingham. The author stresses theoretical contributions of the new concepts and through critical insight argues that the notion of subculture is no longer capable of explaining contemporary social reality.
The classifications of atmospheric circulation

Journal of the Geographical Institute Jovan Cvijic, SASA , 2010, DOI: 10.2298/ijgi1002027s
Abstract: The classifications of atmospheric circulation patterns are a specific research area within synoptic climatology. In general, there are three main groups of classifications: subjective, mixed and objective. In methodological aspect, the recent tendencies are presented in full objectification of classification procedure by mathematical-statistical methods. The classifications of atmospheric circulation are very useful tools in climate change research; for reconstruction of the past climate, analysis of variability of the present climate and in the estimates of future climate. The practical application is to produce weather forecasts in meteorology and for more specific purpose e.g. analysis of air quality, wind atlas, the studies of human health. There are many scientific and operational applications of classifications circulation types, but there is a lack of researches who deal with this issue in scientific literature in Serbia. Only in recent years, there are a few papers that explore the correlation between the climate variability in Serbia and the features of circulation types. .
Analysis of annual sums of precipitation in Serbia
Stanojevi? Gorica
Journal of the Geographical Institute Jovan Cvijic, SASA , 2012, DOI: 10.2298/ijgi1202001s
Abstract: This paper analyses the series of annual sums of precipitation for 27 stations in Serbia for the period 1951-2010. The lowest average perennial precipitation values have been determined for stations in northern Serbia, that is, generally a reduction in precipitation is noticed from west to east of the country. Northeast, east, south and southeast show negative trend values, while a positive precipitation trend is confirmed for the rest of Serbia with the highest values in the west and southwest of Serbia. The advantage of applying the method of cumulative sums and the bootstrapping“ in the analysis of time series in relation to the method of linear trend has been emphasized. Periods when precipitation was below average or above average for the entire analyzed period were defined. Also, a spatial differentiation of change in precipitation for the period of 60 years in Serbia has been noticed. [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. 47007]
Removing Biases from Trainable MT Metrics by Using Self-Training
Milo? Stanojevi
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: Most trainable machine translation (MT) metrics train their weights on human judgments of state-of-the-art MT systems outputs. This makes trainable metrics biases in many ways. One of them is preferring longer translations. These biased metrics when used for tuning are evaluating different types of translations -- n-best lists of translations with very diverse quality. Systems tuned with these metrics tend to produce overly long translations that are preferred by the metric but not by humans. This is usually solved by manually tweaking metric's weights to equally value recall and precision. Our solution is more general: (1) it does not address only the recall bias but also all other biases that might be present in the data and (2) it does not require any knowledge of the types of features used which is useful in cases when manual tuning of metric's weights is not possible. This is accomplished by self-training on unlabeled n-best lists by using metric that was initially trained on standard human judgments. One way of looking at this is as domain adaptation from the domain of state-of-the-art MT translations to diverse n-best list translations.
Sociological issues in the first decade of 21st century: Comparative analysis of Serbia and Croatia
Vuleti? Vladimir,Stanojevi? Dragan
Sociologija , 2013, DOI: 10.2298/soc1301047v
Abstract: The paper analyzes the thematic orientation of sociological works published in three sociological journals in Serbia and Croatia (Sociologija, Sociolo ki pregled and Revija za sociologiju) during two last decades of 20th and the first decade of 21st century. The aim of the paper, set in the opening section, is to investigate the topics which are dealt with by sociologists in Serbia during this turbulent historical period. On the basis of this analysis, answers to the following questions will be attempted: has Serbian sociology kept track, and to what extent, of the changes taking place in the society, and hence how much it has been under the influence of the latter. In the second part of the article the openness of the Serbian sociology toward the world is discussed in the context of aforementioned changes. In order to make judgments and conclusions as objective as possible this topic is considered in a comparative framework - comparing it with conditions in Croatian sociology. Environmental activism as a new form of political participation of the youth in Serbia
Vukeli? Jelisaveta,Stanojevi? Dragan
Sociologija , 2012, DOI: 10.2298/soc1202387v
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore whether the environmental activism is a new form of political participation of the Serbian youth. One of the characteristics of the postindustrial societies is a general citizen withdrawal from the traditional channels of political participation. Political disengagement is thought to characterize all citizens but most of all the young people. However, although young people may have turned away from mainstream politics, they are nevertheless concerned with a wide range of issues that could be considered political in a broader sense of the term. In the post-socialist Europe young people tend to be even less involved in political life than the youth in the established democracies. However, they are also likely to adopt novel forms of political expression. Whether the Serbian youth follow the same pattern of political involvement, we intend to explore in this article. In searching for the answer to this question, we will focus our analysis on the environmental activism, as one of the forms of the new political engagement widely accepted among young people.
Norms and Standards in Foreign Language Textbooks
Barbara Kry?an-Stanojevi
LAHOR : ?asopis za Hrvatski kao Materinski, Drugi i Strani Jezik , 2011,
Abstract: Given that everyday language changes at a very rapid pace, foreign language textbooks quite expectedly cannot follow all the recent trends. The rapid pace of change also exacerbates the assessment of each particular innovation, making it difficult to choose which ones should be included in a textbook and which should be left out. Moreover, should we agree with the trend of using recent newspaper and other media texts in university textbooks? We keep criticizing the language of the media as unreliable and incorrect - is it not hypocritical to use it in textbooks for language learning purposes? This paper is an attempt to answer these and similar questions, basing our conclusions on the example of the most recent Polish and Croatian language textbooks.
