An improved AC-amplifier for electrophysiology

Journal of Automatic Control , 2009, DOI: 10.2298/jac0901007j
Abstract: We present the design, simulation and test results of a new AC amplifier for electrophysiological measurements based on a three op-amp instrumentation amplifier (IA). The design target was to increase the common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), thereby improving the quality of the recorded physiological signals in a noisy environment. The new amplifier actively suppresses the DC component of the differential signal and actively reduces the common mode signal in the first stage of the IA. These functions increase the dynamic range of the amplifier's first stage of the differential signal. The next step was the realization of the amplifier in a single chip technology. The design and tests of the new AC amplifier with a differential gain of 79.2 dB, a CMRR of 130 dB at 50 Hz, a high-pass cutoff frequency at 0.01 Hz and common mode reduction in the first stage of the 49.8 dB are presented in this paper.
Successful lamivudine therapy for chronic hepatitis B in the family
Vojnosanitetski Pregled , 2006, DOI: 10.2298/vsp0605504n
Abstract: Background. Hepatitis B virus infection is a global public health problem since it is a leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. An optimal treatment is needed to reduce mortality. Current therapies for chronic hepatitis B include standard and pegilated interferon-alfa and nucleoside and nucleotide analogies, primarily lamivudine and adefovir. Each of the therapies, however has various limitations. Case report. In this paper we presented a father and his daughter with chronic hepatitis B, successfully treated with lamivudine. Conclusion. In the linked cases of chronic hepatitis B, the choice of antiviral medicine in some patients could also be made on the basis of its efficacy in the persons previously treated with it, even without determining virus genotype.

Abstract: The low level of physical fitness of intellectually disabled individuals is most often the result of a sedentary lifestyle and the lack of the possibility for these individuals to take part in various forms of physical activity, and as a consequence these individuals are often unable to take part in any form of planned physical activities, are unable to adequately perform everyday activities and have limited abilities for performing workrelated duties. Regular physical activity can have a preventive effect, can reduce health risks and prevent the onset of various illnesses, as well as to promote an active lifestyle and increase physical and work capacities among the members of this particular population. Sport can play an important role in the life of individuals with intellectual disability as it represents a good basis for the development of physical and cognitive abilities. Team sports, which include interaction among a large number of people, a decision-making processes in a variety of situations and the understanding of the game itself in its constituent parts can be used as an effective and practical treatment of individuals with intellectual disability.

Abstract: Ecological education gains an increasing importance in the moment when ecological crisis acquires increasingly larger proportions. Education is one of the most powerful social means in fighting problems and challenges of the future. This paper presents the results of the research referring to pupils' attitudes with respect to the activities they prefer to be involved in, the independent variables their readiness for involvement depends on, as well as the relation between the knowledge possessed by pupils and their readiness to be involved in ecological activities. Research was conducted on the sample of 284 pupils in the eighth grade of primary school in urban and rural area and polluted and unpolluted environment. The results indicate that pupils find more interesting the activities taking place in nature, those where they are immediate participants and those where they have a subjective feeling that they are doing something to protect the environment. Besides, the results show that girls from both samples and pupils from rural area are more ready to get involved in ecological activities. Living in polluted or unpolluted environment is not a statistically significant variable which would influence the readiness of pupils to get involved in these activities. As the most interesting result of this research, we consider the finding that a higher level of pupils' ecological knowledge and living in polluted environment do not guarantee higher readiness of pupils to get involved in the activities of environment protection.
Serbian-Albanian language contacts and two types of phonological systems in the Balkan languages

Abstract: Phonological systems of the Balkan languages do not correspond to the Balkan language union borders, which can be explained by the difference between "intensive" (morphosyntactic) and "extensive" (phonological) language unions. In this case, we are dealing with the entrance of the Balkan languages into a wide transitional zone, stretching along the borders of East and Central Europe, and with the coinciding of their phonological systems with the system of Slavic languages known as vowel and consonant types. The same classification into two phonological systems exists in the Balkans too, and between them there are also two transitional borderlines. As known, the mediopalatal order of the "Macedonian" type [k', g', n', ] (q, gj, nj, l) has been generalized in both the standard Albanian language and most of the Albanian dialects. Albanian [k', g', n', ] are, just like their Macedonian counterparts, semi-emancipated palatal correlates of basic [k, g, n, l], as proved by examples of their positional dephonologization and dialectal hardening /n'/ > /n/ [n%], when followed by front vowels. Both semi-soft [n%] and typically Albanian lateral opposition [ - ] confirm a palatal correlation of these phonemes existing also in the neighboring Serbian dialects. Albanian has undoubtedly affected the rise of these features, be it through an unilateral influence or merely through supporting different phonological development in these old-shtokavian dialects. On the other hand, the same could be said for the affrication of palatovelars [k', g'] > [ , (], which except in south-west region between Ishmi and Shkumbin, Elbasan and Tirana is present in all other branches of the Ghegian dialect. Wide distribution of this phenomenon excludes the possibility of one-sided Serbian influence while its character – reduction of palatovelars [k', g'] (q, gj) and affricates [ , (] ( , xh) to one semi-soft affricate pair – has a typological and structural parallel in the Timok region [ , (] (ч- ) and reveals a transitional character of this phenomenon, which is undoubtedly related to the phonological system governing the Serbian language. It is well known that, the simplification of palatal pairs was a reciprocal process and it spread to the neighboring Serbian dialects. This simplification is a strong indicator of transitional character of this zone which stretches between semi-emancipated palatal order [k', g'], governing the greater part of the Albanian language territory, and the emancipated palatal order [ , (] ( , ), characterizing the Serbian phonological system.

Abstract: Backgrounds: Pre- and postoperative chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) sizes have been used in clinical trials to predict the risk of postoperative recurrence. Commonly, dimensions of the pre- and postoperative lesions have been assessed by computerized tomography (CT) scans using maximum thickness as a linear measurement. Our goal was to characterize this common method for quantification of pre- and postoperative lesion sizes and to assess its estimation validity compared to estimation by hematoma volumetry. Methods: We prospectively investigated pre- and 1st postoperative day CT scans of 107 adult surgical patients with uni- or bilateral CSDH. Pre- and postoperative thickness of CSDH was determined and then compared to pre- and postoperative lesion volume measured with 3D hematoma volumetry. Results: Pearson correlation coefficients between mean pre- and postoperative lesion thickness and mean pre- and postoperative lesion volume in the unilateral subgroup were 0.491 and 0.498, respectively; in the bilateral subgroup 0.505 and 0.579, respectively; and in the whole series 0.653 and 0.472, respectively. Conclusions: Pre- and postoperative thickness of CSDH does not offer reasonable approximations of the pre- and postoperative lesion size when compared with results from 3D volumetry in the unilateral subgroup, bilateral subgroup or overall.

Barbara Mu?i,Ivan Stani
Urbani Izziv , 2005,
Abstract: The project evolved from a local initiative for the revitalisation of the rural hinterland of Koper in Slovene Istria. The local desire was transformed into expert guidelines for part of the emerging formal spatial planning documents of the Municipality of Koper. Several public participation methods with the local inhabitants were also tested.
