Taxonomic Chauvinism Revisited: Insight from Parental Care Research
Zachary R. Stahlschmidt
PLOS ONE , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0024192
Abstract: Parental care (any non-genetic contribution by a parent that appears likely to increase the fitness of its offspring) is a widespread trait exhibited by a broad range of animal taxa. In addition to influencing the fitness of parent(s) and offspring, parental care may be inextricably involved in other evolutionary processes, such as sexual selection and the evolution of endothermy. Yet, recent work has demonstrated that bias related to taxonomy is prevalent across many biological disciplines, and research in parental care may be similarly burdened. Thus, I used parental care articles published in six leading journals of fundamental behavioral sciences (Animal Behaviour, Behavioral Ecology, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, Ethology, Hormones and Behavior, and Physiology & Behavior) from 2001–2010 (n = 712) to examine the year-to-year dynamics of two types of bias related to taxonomy across animals: (1) taxonomic bias, which exists when research output is not proportional to the frequency of organisms in nature, and (2) taxonomic citation bias, which is a proxy for the breadth of a given article—specifically, the proportion of articles cited that refer solely to the studied taxon. I demonstrate that research on birds likely represents a disproportionate amount of parental care research and, thus, exhibits taxonomic bias. Parental care research on birds and mammals also refers to a relatively narrow range of taxonomic groups when discussing its context and, thus, exhibits taxonomic citation bias. Further, the levels of taxonomic bias and taxonomic citation bias have not declined over the past decade despite cautionary messages about similar bias in related disciplines— in fact, taxonomic bias may have increased. As in Bonnet et al. (2002), my results should not be interpreted as evidence of an ‘ornithological Mafia’ conspiring to suppress other taxonomic groups. Rather, I generate several rational hypotheses to determine why bias persists and to guide future work.
Integralidade, constru??o e socializa??o de conhecimentos no contexto da educa??o permanente e atua??o de profissionais da área da saúde
Stahlschmidt, Ana Paula Melchiors;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832012005000038
Abstract: the paper discusses the fragmentation between practices developed in healthcare services and knowledge generated in the academic context, proposing a reflection on the subject as a phenomenon related to the concepts of modern science, guided by cartesian paradigm. it discusses the relevance of establishing new conceptions of building knowledge, valuing those elaborated in routine services and proposing a new approach about this subject in undergraduate and graduate courses, and also other activities within inservice education proposals. from this perspective it describes an experience in conducting workshops of texts elaboration, focused for professionals who are performing specialization courses in health area, aiming the systematization and socialization of experiences developed in their fields of professional activities. this activity allowed an important place in building knowledge and the elaboration of texts in the form of experience reports, published in scientific journals.

Abstract: background: physical exercise (pe) is effective in the treatment and prevention of hypertension associated with improved lipid profile and cardiac contractile function. regular and moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages such as red wine brings a cardiovascular protective effect. beverage-derived polyphenols have antioxidant properties benefiting blood vessels. there is little evidence on the consumption of red wine associated with pe and the influences on the cardiovascular system. objective: to investigate the effect of physical exercise (pe) and moderate red wine intake interaction on systolic blood pressure (sbp), high density lipoprotein (hdl) levels, physical performance (pp) and left ventricular ejection fraction (lvef) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (shr). methods: sample of 32 shrs divided into four groups: wine and exercise group (weg), wine group (wg), exercise group (eg) and control group (cg). red wine doses were given by intra-gastric gavage, during ten weeks, coincident with pe period, performed on treadmills. the shrs received red wine doses of 3.715 ml/kg/day. physical performance was analyzed by maximal exercise test (met) and lvef by echocardiographic measures. sbp measurement was made before and after the pe protocol. results: demonstrated that the three groups which suffered intervention presented significant sbp reduction compared to cg. at the end of the protocol, weg showed the largest reduction. like in sbp results, weg showed the best outcome on hdl levels at the experiment end. there was no significant difference of physical performance and lvef between groups. conclusion: pe associated with moderate red wine intake has cardioprotective effects on sbp and hdl levels in shr. their physical performance and lvef are not modified.

Abstract: objective: epidemiologically analyze the use of the pericardiostomy in the diagnosis of cardiac injury in a trauma universitary hospital in curitiba. methods: observacional, retrospective study, analyzing medical records of patients who were submitted to penetrating or blunt trauma, in a period of 06 years, in urgency and emergency unit of cajuru universitary hospital. results: 120 patients had been submitted to pericardiostomy in the period above related. the age group varied from 15 to 80 years, the major prevalence between 20 and 30 years (49.7%), 105 patients were men and 15 women. blunt trauma corresponded to 14 patients and penetrating to 105 patients. from penetrating ones, 41 patients were inflicted by stabwound, 60 by gunshot wound and 4 by both. about injury sites: 47.5% had been precordial, 34.16% in thoraco-abdominal transistion, 5.0% in both and 13.33% in other sites. from the accomplished jp, 72.5% had been negative and 27.5% positive. among the positive, cardiac injuries diagnosed by immediate thoracotomy were: right atrium 21.2%, right ventricle 30.3%, left ventricle 24,2%, ascending aorta 3%, no injury 21.2%. 35 patients died: 18 of them up to 24hs and 17 after 24hs. conclusion: the pericardiostomy were performed mostly in young men with penetrating trauma caused by gunshot wounds., in its majority with injury of the right ventricle as main finding, which agreed to the reviwed literature.

Abstract: this article examines the conceptions of playing identified in three kindergarten teachers who teach five-year-old children at a public institution. such conceptions are found in the reports of their experiences with memory and oral communication. after qualitative data analysis a paradox is observed in the teachers' narratives in which we find a conception of playing as related to creation, freedom, fantasy and imagination, and at the same time, the idea of playing as a pedagogical strategy.
