Herbal drug usage with modern medicine 1: Case study of an enzyme inducer, St John′s Wort - Some perspectives

Abstract: While the usage of herbal medicines continues to be on the rise, it brings along an imminent risk of drug-drug interaction with scores of modern day medicine(s). The focus of this article is to provide an overview of a potential drug-drug interaction resulting, due to induction of cytochrome P450 enzyme(s) and/or transporters, from the use of a popular herbal product known as St. John′s Wort (SJW) with modern day medicines. Also, it provides some perspectives and considerations in rationalizing the use of SJW.

Abstract: The development of formulations for anti-cancer drugs imposes challenges owing to the different physicochemical attributes of the compounds as well as the need to deliver the compound to the desired target and/or tumor sites. In this article we present case studies to discuss recent formulation related work for both paclitaxel and topotecan. As enumerated by the case studies, biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic challenges are imposed in design and optimization of suitable dosage forms for both intravenous and oral drug delivery. The focus is on selection of excipients which may play additional role(s) in contributing towards the disposition of both paclitaxel and topotecan.

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to design an effective and relatively simple method for controlled cooling of hot rolled steel channels by water spraying on the final cooling bed after continuous cast steel billets passing through reheating furnace and sequential rolls to form channels. The need for this research arose as the channels were being cooled by forced air draft and natural convection which brought the temperature of the channels to about 270°C (518°F) at the shear stand. Steel at this temperature is too hot for convenient handling by the operators. Additional cooling by water spraying would be an acceptable solution but such cooling should be designed to enable an acceptable microstructure to be developed in the channel, as the microstructure of steel is strongly affected by nonequilibrium cooling through the eutectoid range: the mechanical properties of steel are a consequence of the microstructure. The approach followed in this investigation was first to develop a finite element method (FEM) to determine the temperature profiles in the channel subjected to cooling by water spraying and natural convection and arrive at suitable water spray rates to bring the temperature of the channel at the shear stand to levels suitable for convenient handling. PATRAN was used for preprocessing and ABAQUS for processing and post processing. Next, laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the microstructure and hardness of channels at the spray rates found suitable through FEM, to suggest the water spray rate most suitable for providing a temperature convenient for handling and for developing a desirable

Abstract: In his paper “On quasi-separative ‘semigroup’s’”, Krasilnikova, Yu. I. and Novikov, B. V. have studied congruences induced by certain relations on a “semigroup”. They further showed that if the “semigroup” is quasi separative then the induced congruence is a semilattice congruence. In this paper we continue the study of these relations and the induced congruences i.e., the congruences induced by certain relations on ‘‘semigroup’s”. In this paper mainly it is observed that if S is a quasi-separative and regular “semigroup” then the necessary and sufficient condition for \"\"to be the smallest semilattice congruence η is obtained.

Abstract: Reducing the energy consumption of available resources is still a problem to be solved in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Many types of existing routing protocols are developed to save power consumption. In these protocols, cluster-based routing protocols are found to be more energy efficient. A cluster head is selected to aggregate the data received from root nodes and forwards these data to the base station in cluster-based routing. The selection of cluster heads should be efficient to save energy. In our proposed protocol, we use static clustering for the efficient selection of cluster heads. The proposed routing protocol works efficiently in large as well as small areas. For an optimal number of cluster head selection we divide a large sensor field into rectangular clusters. Then these rectangular clusters are further grouped into zones for efficient communication between cluster heads and a base station. We perform MATLAB simulations to observe the network stability, throughput, energy consumption, network lifetime and the number of cluster heads. Our proposed routing protocol outperforms in large areas in comparison with the LEACH, MH-LEACH, and SEP routing protocols.
