Scientia Agricola , 1999,

Spinola-Castro, Angela Maria;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302005000100007
Abstract: the treatment of intersex disorders has passed through different historical periods. the most important was the age of surgery, during which the dominant concept was that at birth the brain would be adaptable, psychosexually neutral and gender identity the result of educational and social processes. thus, the preferred and systematic treatment was towards female assignment because from the surgical point of view it was technically more feasible the construction of a vagina than a penis with future normal function. during the 90?s various other aspects began to be considered, mainly ethical questions. it became evident the importance of prenatal exposition to androgens, the various environmental and cultural factors related to sexuality and more recently the recognition of the brain as an endocrine organ. it is now quite clear the existence of a wide spectrum of sexual identities as well as the different ways individuals conduct their social sexual behavior. surgical procedures are still discussed, especially with the purpose to determine the best moment to be performed and in the context of some ethical aspects involved. today the moment is more complex. the work is done with families by multidisciplinary teams in order to offer a more adequate psychosocial orientation to intersex patients, but all the steps on how to achieve those aims are not known yet.

Abstract: morning glory syndrome (mgs) is a congenital optic disc dysplasia often associated with craniofacial anomalies, especially basal encephalocele and hypopituitarism. clinical signs are varied and often occult. the pax6 gene is involved in ocular morphogenesis and is expressed in numerous ocular tissues during development especially in the developing central nervous system. the aim of the present study is to evaluate pax6 in mgs associated with isolated growth hormone deficiency. three pre-pubertal males (a, b and c) with mgs and short stature due to growth hormone deficiency, treated with recombinant human growth hormone with limited response, were reported. two of them had basal encephalocele. coding and non-coding sequences corresponding of pax6 different transcripts were analyzed by direct sequencing. nucleotide variations causing putative aminoacid change were not observed. patient a presented the new ivs2+9g>a transition, whereas patients a and c were heterozygous for known single nucleotide polymorphisms (snp) within the intron 4. in addition, two snp heterozygoses were observed for patient c in both intron 9 and 13. sequencing also revealed several nucleotide variations in patient b. two heterozygoses for known polymorphisms were identified along with a novel c>a nucleotide change in intron 4. this patient also presented a low number on the tg repeat in intron 9 and a new ivs11+33a>t transversion. gene regulation and transcription of pax6 are complex processes; there are two major protein isoforms, pax6(-5a) and pax6(+5a), and nine transcripts described. furthermore, extra transcription regulatory elements have been postulated within pax6 introns. considering that neither population distributions on pax6 polymorphism nor their linkeages with diseases have been reported, a functional effect due to alterations described here cannot be discarded.

Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832000000200007
Abstract: the objective of this paper is to recover the journalistic history of the visceral leishmaniasis epidemic that has been affecting the city of belo horizonte, brazil, since 1993. it was pieced together from its chronological history, as well as from the narratives and discourses on the epidemic in 101 articles published by the mass media between 1993 and 1996. as regards methodology, the analysis relied on a proposal of foucault's described in his 1972 work, "a arqueologia do saber" (the archeology of knowledge), and it highlights the existence of three major lines of discourse, which characterize thematic groups, in the subject matters studied, i.e., discourse produced by science, by the state and by society. each one of them makes its own contribution as to how the illness is depicted in the journalistic universe, and puts forth its own views on these arenas. thus, by studying journalistic texts, one can decipher another epidemic process that developed concurrently with the one affecting human beings and dogs, expressed in the narrative constructions on visceral leishmaniasis in newspaper articles.
