A Method to Estimate Spatial Resolution in 2-D Seismic Surface Wave Tomographic Problems  [PDF]
Jorge L. de Souza
International Journal of Geosciences (IJG) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijg.2014.58068
Abstract:

A novel methodology to quantify the spatial resolution in 2-D seismic surface wave tomographic problems is proposed in this study. It is based on both the resolving kernels computed via full resolution matrix and the concept of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of a Gaussian function. This method allows estimating quantitatively the spatial resolution at any cell of a gridded area. It was applied in the northeastern Brazil and the estimated spatial resolution range is in agreement with all previous surface wave investigations in the South America continent.

Beyond Gangsta: Hip-Hop, Skate Culture and Web Culture in the Music of Tyler, the Creator  [PDF]
Gustavo Souza Marques
Art and Design Review (ADR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/adr.2015.31002
Abstract: This article came from the homonymous PhD proposal submitted and accepted by Music School of University College Cork (UCC, Ireland) to be started in September 2015 under the guidance of Dr. J. Griffith Rollefson. It aims to point out and discuss the articulations made by rapper, producer, actor and video director Tyler Okonma, known by the stage name Tyler, the Creator, to shift, but also maintain, some frames of gangsta rap discourse. Noticed by his rape fantasies lyrics and ultraviolent shouts, most present in his two first albums, Tyler has been acclaimed for his notable musical talent but criticized for its misogynist themes. Despite this outrageous aspect of its music, his confessional and often self-depreciating lyrics have been a novelty for constant self-pride and powerful hip-hop lyrics. Moreover, it works as a compensation for his aggressiveness since it could be seen as a demonstration of fragility rather than sexual domination. The way he uses hip-hop mentality, skate culture nihilism and Web 2.0 platforms to promote his art has made him one of the most prominent hip-hop artists from 21st century. Based on related authors on hip-hop topics like gangsta, misogyny, media and racial stereotypes this article discuss the ways in which Tyler, the Creator reflects but also denies the most known and commented frames of rap music.
Targeting Brazilian Market through Digital Branding Strategies: The Relevance of the Cultural Dimension  [PDF]
Lilian Maria de Souza Almeida
Open Journal of Business and Management (OJBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojbm.2015.31004
Abstract: While Internet has been achieving its omnipresence worldwide and offering to companies the opportunity of trading in a “no-borders” market, global brands, and those aspiring to become global, face the challenge of dealing with significant cultural differences. Emergent economies account for one of the greatest opportunities for global brands interested in extending their business overseas through digital channels. Among these economies, Brazil has been receiving special focus lately as a promising consumer market. Working from a theoretical point of view through literature and simultaneously examining companies as potential paradigms, this study aims to provide suggestions for global brands interested in targeting the Brazilian market through effective cross-cultural digital branding strategies. The results are valuable insights about how to establish better communication with Brazilian consumers and also offer some guidance to help marketers to keep brands desired and admired in Brazil. It was mainly concluded that global brands should find out the right balance between a standardized and an adapted cultural approach in order to establish a trust-worthy proximity with Brazilian consumers on the digital environment.

Democracia racial e multiculturalismo: ambivalente singularidade cultural brasileira
Souza, Jessé;
Estudos Afro-Asiáticos , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-546X2000000200007
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to discuss some aspects of gilberto freyre?s work in an attempt to distinguish those that are more dated from views which are still surprisingly up-to-date. it therefore takes as a starting point anthony marx?s making race and nation: a comparison of the united states, south africa and brazil. the reason for choosing this book is its author?s interesting idea of linking the racial question in those three classic examples of large nations made up of blacks and whites to the theme of nation building.
(N?o) Reconhecimento e subcidadania, ou o que é ''ser gente''?
Souza, Jessé;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452003000200003
Abstract: this article discusses and matches some contemporary theories on the origin and dynamics of social recognition, such as charles taylor's, and sociocultural approaches to the subject of inequality, such as pierre bourdieu's and reinhard kreckel's, in order to apply them, in a modified and productive way, to central matters of peripheral modernity, such as the undercitizenship and the naturalization of inequality. its aim is to develop an alternative conception to the patrimonialist and personalist approaches to the subject, as well as to short-range and pragmatic perceptions, which are the result of the partition and fragmentation of knowledge, unconcerned about understanding a more embracing reality.

Souza, Jessé;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452000000200008

Ra?a ou classe? Sobre a desigualdade brasileira
Souza, Jessé;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452005000200003
Abstract: the subject of inequality in brazil can only be understood in the light of the particularity of our modernization process. this means that the catching of the specific weight of the race factor requires a large, inclusive and holistic theoretical framework. it also requires a reassessment of the brazilian debate about that issue occurred in the middle of the last century. this article argues that the social class problem has been unfairly underestimated, if we take in account the context of the debate about our inequality.

Souza, Celina;

Abstract: present features of federalism in brazil together with recent changes are analyzed in search of dominant tendencies. strong tensions are identified on several levels, specially (a) between the commitment regarding policies directed toward the reduction of social and regional inequalities taken by the national state during re-democratization and the exigencies of the economic policy which it adopted; (b) between the decentralization of policies and the limitation of resources as an effect of regional inequalities; (c) between the federal emphasis on the sub-national unities and the drive towards a recentralization of policies.
