Morphological Structure Characterization of PAH/NiTsPc Multilayer Nanostructured Films  [PDF]

Abstract: Morphological structure and growth process of LbL nanostructured films from nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) were investigated. The experimental results of UV-visible adsorption kinetics (modeled by Johnson-Mehl-Avrami functions) and AFM images analyzes suggested that the surface morphology structure of films is formed by rod-shaped aggregates produced by a two-step growth process: nucleation and diffusion-limited growth.

Abstract: epidemiological studies suggest a relationship between suntanning habits and high risk of melanoma. a literature review was carried out for the period between 1977 and 1998 using medline and embase (excerpta medica) databases. the analysis showed that intentional sun exposure is highly prevalent among youths, despite their awareness of the risks involved in excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation and their knowledge on skin protection measures. intentional exposure is a habit fostered by certain beliefs and attitudes towards suntanning and stimulated by peer pressure and aesthetic referents.the most common tanning practices involve a high risk of developing melanoma. it was concluded that the most effective means to prevent melanoma is mass media dissemination of the concept that having a tanned skin is not healthy - since it implies the skin being damaged by solar ultraviolet radiation - and education campaigns for effectively changing people's behaviors and their motivations.

Abstract: strigol is a natural sesquiterpene and is a strong stimulant of germination, mainly of weed seeds from the genera striga and orobanche. solutions with concentrations from 0.01; 0.1; 10 and 1000 mg/l of a new strigol analogue, synthesized from natural safrole (isolated from sassafraz oil) were applied to seeds of lettuce, ipomoea grandifolia and bidens pilosa. a stimulating effect in the germination of weed seeds was observed, whereas no effect on lettuce was observed. the results indicate that the new analogue presents potential application as a germination stimulant of weed seeds, which could be eliminated from the soil, before sowing vegetables such as lettuce.

Abstract: O estrigol é um sesquiterpeno natural que possui elevada atividade como estimulante da germina o, principalmente de sementes de espécies invasoras, pertencentes aos gêneros Striga e Orobanche. Solu es contendo 0,01; 0,1; 10 e 1000 mg/L de um novo análogo de estrigol, sintetizado a partir de um alilbenzeno natural, o safrol (isolado do óleo de sassafraz), foram aplicadas em sementes de alface e de Ipomoea grandifolia e Bidens pilosa. Observou-se que houve efeito estimulador na germina o das sementes das ervas invasoras, sem afetar a germina o da alface. Os resultados indicam que essa substancia apresenta potencial de uso para estimular a germina o de sementes de ervas invasoras, que poderiam ser eliminadas do solo, antes do plantio de hortali as como a alface.

Abstract: sewage sludge can be a viable alternative as organic manure for lettuce culture in sandy soils. a field experiment was carried out to evaluate the yield and quality of lettuce fertilized with sewage sludge in comparison with poultry manure. the treatments were sewage sludge, sewage sludge + npk, poultry manure, poultry manure + npk and control (without fertilizer). the yield and commercial quality of lettuce fertilized with sewage sludge did not differ from the treatments with poultry manure. macronutrients content in lettuce leaves did not differ from sewage sludge or poultry manure. the micronutrients and heavy metal contents in lettuce leaves did not differ between organic manure and control. the sewage sludge derived from brewery can substitute the poultry manure in organic fertilization of the lettuce, without reducing the yield and quality of this culture and did not affect heavy metal content in the leaves.
Aduba o de alface com lodo de esgoto de cervejaria

Abstract: O lodo de esgoto pode ser uma alternativa viável na aduba o organica da alface, em solos arenosos. Avaliou-se a produtividade e a qualidade dessa cultura por meio de um experimento de campo, comparando a aplica o de lodo de esgoto da cervejaria Equatorial, com a de esterco de galinha. Os tratamentos consistiram de aduba es com lodo de esgoto, lodo de esgoto + NPK, esterco de galinha, esterco de galinha + NPK, NPK e controle. A produ o e a qualidade comercial da alface cultivada com lodo de esgoto de cervejaria n o diferiram em compara o ao tratamento com esterco de galinha. N o houve diferen a no teor de macronutrientes nas folhas dessa cultura, com a utiliza o do esterco ou lodo de esgoto de cervejaria. Os teores de micronutrientes e metais pesados nas folhas da alface dos tratamentos n o diferiram daqueles observados no controle. Desses resultados depreende-se que o lodo de esgoto de cervejaria pode substituir o esterco de galinha em aduba es da cultura de alface, sem prejuízos na produtividade, qualidade e sem afetar os teores de metais pesados nas folhas.
Anemia e peso ao nascer

Abstract: objective: to verify the influence of low birthweight (lbw) on child anemia and malnutrition during the first year of life. methods: sample population included all children under one year seen at health units of the municipality of maringá, southern brazil, in 1998. total sample size was 587 children. lbw was defined as birthweight below 2 500 g. the analysis of growth for the weigh-for-age and height-for-age indicators was based on nationalcenter for healthsstatiscs standards. for anemia diagnosis, a biochemical hemoglobin concentration dosage, using hemocue direct colorimetric method was employed. children with [hb] <11,0 g/dl were considered as anemic. results: fifty-eight percent of the studied population were anemic, and 37 children (6.3%) presented lbw. anemia was more prevalent during the second semester of life (p=0.0093). undernutrition, as indicated by the height-for-age indicator, was high especially for children aged 0-3 months with lbw. conclusions: although lbw rates among the studied population were similar to those of developed countries, we suggest the implementation of specific antenatal care for high-risk women, aiming at reducing lbw, an event that affects the child, hampering its growth and increasing the risk of anemia and its countless deleterious consequences.
Rice Varieties Tonoplast and Plasma Membrane H+-ATPases Differential Activities in Response to Nitrate Pulses

Abstract: In a growth chamber experiment, the response of two rice varieties (Piaui and IAC-47) to nitrate suppression (24 h) and pulses (72 h) was studied. Nitrate suppression in nutrient solution increased plasma membrane H+-ATPase activity in Piaui plants previously grown under 0.5 mM and IAC-47 under 5.0 mM NO3-N. Under NO3- pulses, IAC-47 presented highest H+-ATPase activity in its plasma membrane, while Piaui showed increases in tonoplast V-H+-ATPase activity. These results suggested that under nitrate pulses IAC-47 increased its ability to take up NO3- from nutrient solution. Piaui plants preferentially retrieves nitrate stored from the vacuoles. Plasmalem protein content in Piaui tonoplast was enhanced particularly in -N plants previously grown under 5.0 mM NO3--N. We suggest that these enzymes (H+-ATPases) could be monitored as markers in nitrogen use efficiency study in rice plants.
Physiological and Morphological Adaptations in Two Rice Varieties Cultivated Under Ammonium and Light Deficiency

Abstract: In this study, two rice varieties were evaluated: Piaui and IAC-47. Piaui is adapted to Humid Tropic environmental conditions, where there is N deficiency and low light since rice is planted. IAC-47 is an improved variety. This research aimed to characterize physiological and morphological adaptations observed during vegetative growth under low ammonium-N nutrition and low light in both varieties. To analyze it, developmental parameters, soluble sugars content, amino-N, NH4+, total-N and pigments were compared between varieties. The assay was carried out in controlled growth chamber conditions, at 24°C and 12/12 h light/dark periods (200 μE m-2 sec-1). Rice plants were grown in nutrient solution until 26 Days After Germination with a modified Hoagland and Arnon. All plants received two treatments with NH4+-N 0.1 and 1.0 mM, pH 5.5. Under these conditions, Piaui plants presented longer roots, chlorophyll a+b enhances, soluble sugars levels reduction and free amino-N content increases, what would be important for its adaptation to low N and low light environments, found in Humid Tropic rice culture. In spite of this, IAC-47, selected for high nutrient and light availability, presented typical senescence symptoms.
Produ??o de biomassa e óleo essencial de hortel? em hidroponia em fun??o de nitrogênio e fósforo

Abstract: an experiment was carried out, using a hydroponic system to study the effect of plant nutrition regimes on the plant growth and the production of essential oils in mentha piperita (mint). plants were grown in nutrient solutions with varying levels of n and p: 120 and 16; 60 and 16; 120 and 4; 60 and 4, mg l-1 of n and p in the treatments 1; 2; 3 and 4 respectively. plants of the treatment 4 (29 days after starting the treatments, dat) presented the highest production of essential oils. however, plants presented the highest biomass production at 64 dat. the higher the n levels in the nutrient solution, the lower the production of essential oils. higher n inputs resulted in higher total biomass. there was a negative relationship between the plant cycle and the production of essential oils. mint plants grown in hydroponics systems can be harvested at 29 dat for the production of essentials oils, saving time and costs of production.
