The use of the concept of guild can be useful for the functional trophic categorization of communities, because there is no requirement identification of organisms in the level of species and not to treat each species as a separate entity. The aim of this studywas to analyze the functional feeding groups (collectors-gatherers, collectors-filterers, shredders, predators and grazer-scrapers) of the macroinvertebrate communities of two reservoirs in the Midwestern region of S o Paulo State. Sampling was carried out in rainy(March/April - 2001) and dry (July/August - 2001) seasons and the data obtained indicate that ‘collectors-gatherers’ is the most frequent guild. This fact suggests a great importance of organic matter as a food source in the diet of the macroinvertebrates analyzed.

This study evaluated the water quality of the Vargem Limpa stream and tested the hypothesis that protected stretches of the aquatic system, located within a conservation unit, favor the preservation of the diversity of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera). Samplings were conducted in four stations, where some physical and chemical variables were measured. The results obtained by the study indicated the predominance of genera associated with arenaceous substrata, and that the stretches protected by the conservation unit presented betterenvironmental conditions, with better-preserved Chironomidae diversity, demonstrating the importance of these areas in maintaining the diversity of Chironomidae.

Biotemas , 2008,
Abstract: The present study analyzed the feeding habits and structure of the Chironomidae fauna in Vargem Limpa stream, in December 2004. The main food item ingested by most of the analyzed genera (Beardius, Caladomyia, Chironomus, Clinotanypus, Corynoneura, Cricotopus, Cryptochironomus, Dicrotendipes, Endotribelos, Harnischia, Fissimentum, Lopescladius, Polypedilum, Tanypus and Tanytarsus) was identified as detritus, except for the Cladopelma whose main food item was algae. Ablabesmyia was the only genus that exhibited items of animal origin in the diet. The diets of 17 genera were investigated, and the majority of the individuals were classified as collectors.

Humic Acid-Induced Hairy Root Growth in Basil Ismodulated by Nitric Oxide and Reactive Oxygen Species  [PDF]

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2017.812212
Abstract: The bioactivity of humic acids (HA) is mainly due to the presence of auxin analogs. In turn, nitric oxide (NO) production in plants affects root growth and may result from endogenous auxin production or the application of synthetic auxin analogs or HA. Nitric oxide signaling may be related to the bioactivity of the HA. Although the auxin, NO, and ROS-mediated activity of HA has been studied, no studies exist on their effects in Ocimum basilicum L., commonly known as basil. A study under controlled in vitro conditions was performed using hairy roots (hairy roots) of basil grown in medium with N-NO3- (0.5 or 5.0 mM) and subjected to treatments with HA (3 mMC·L-1) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 100 μM), an NO donor, either without or with 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO; 200 μM), an NO scavenger. The addition of HA and SNP resulted in significant increases in the root growth, associated with increased NO and reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents. The application of the NO scavenger cPTIO with the SNP and HA decreased the effects of both substances on the root growth and endogenous levels of the NO and ROS. The increased root growth promoted by the NO donor (SNP) and HA was also associated with increased proton pump and catalase activity for both N-NO3- levels tested. The results showed that the effects of HA are dependent on NO and ROS, which act as messengers, inducing root growth.
Water privatization and public health in Latin America
Mulreany,John P.; Calikoglu,Sule; Ruiz,Sonia; Sapsin,Jason W.;
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892006000100004
Abstract: objectives: this study had two objectives: (1) to determine what the public health and development literature has found regarding the public health outcomes of water privatization in latin america and (2) to evaluate whether the benefits of water privatization, if any, outweigh the equity and justice concerns that privatization raises. methods: using a standard set of terms to search several databases, the authors identified and reviewed articles and other materials from public health and development sources that were published between 1995 and 2005 and that evaluated the public health effects of water privatizations in latin america from 1989 to 2000, based on (1) access to water by the poor and/or (2) improvements in public health. next, the authors examined the experiences of three cities in bolivia (cochabamba, el alto, and la paz) in order to illuminate further the challenges of water privatization. finally, the authors considered the equity and justice issues raised by the privatization of water. results: the literature review raised persistent concerns regarding access to water by the poor under privatization. the review also suggested that the public sector could deliver public health outcomes comparable to those of the private sector, as measured by access rates and decreasing child mortality rates. in terms of social equity and justice, privatization marked a troubling shift away from the conception of water as a "social good" and toward the conception of water-and water management services-as commodities. conclusions: our results indicated there is no compelling case for privatizing existing public water utilities based on public health grounds. from the perspective of equity and justice, water privatization may encourage a minimalist conception of social responsibility for public health that may hinder the development of public health capacities in the long run.
