Early Childhood Education: Difficulties Creating and Changing Daily Practice  [PDF]

Abstract:

This paper is based on research carried out with children and adults at early childhood education institutions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The research goals were to identify interactions between adults and children and to rethink pedagogical practice. The theoretical-methodological framework was based on language and culture studies, the sociology of childhood and anthropology. After studying children and adults in different contexts and early childhood education public policies and practice, the results present challenges of changing and creating early education practices in difficult contexts, especially with regard to the creation and use of spaces intended for children. This is the focus of the text, which is structured in three sections. Section one presents the theoretical and methodological issues. The second section analyzes three case studies developed in public pre-schools situated in different cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Section three presents conclusions and priorities for intervention and change concerning children, adults and their interactions.

Abstract: this paper discusses childhood education in the context of brazilian educational policies. in a first moment, childhood education is situated in the political panorama and the challenges of this field are presented. the paper then focuses on teacher education, one of the most expressive challenges of brazilian educational policies and analyses the importance of the changes in the pedagogy course curriculum. in a third moment, it explores childhood education and basic school (now 9 year long) as inseparable levels of the democratization process of brazilian education and points out the relevance of this articulation for children and pedagogic practice in nursery, primary and basic schools.

Abstract: this text has a theoretical and practical approach - it intends to present an alternative to curriculum analyses and curriculum construction. it is based on the activities of educational consultancy as well as on educational policies, evaluation practice managed by different public institutions, and on educational research, with the purpose of aiding pedagogical proposals or curricula projects. the text is guided by a critical theory of culture and the author assumes that every pedagogical project expresses a political and cultural project. it is aimed at, in particular, professionals who work or study in public education. the analysis developed here attempted to systemize the principal questions that have to be answered in order to elaborate curricula projects.

Abstract: this article presents a research about narrative, reading and writing experiences and teachers' biographies. based on critical theory of culture and modernity, particularly on walter benjamin, the research intends to study reading and writing teachers' practices, to understand their relation with written language and to understand also in which way this relation influences pedagogic action. the article begins analysing theorethical and methodological questions; than it presents the phases performed by the research - exploratory period (when pre-school and elementary school teachers were interviewed), field study (when teachers that worked at the 20/30/40ies and the 50/60ies were interviewed), the main results; and, at the end, it summarizes the analyses that are being developed concerning reading and writing photographies in rio de janeiro daily life.

Abstract: this paper analyses ethical questions faced in research developed with children of various ages, groups and contexts. it discusses the childhood conception that underlines research presented in monographs, dissertations and thesis that are presented or commented along the text. the article refers to three issues. the first issue focuses on names (true or fictional) of children observed or interviewed. the second issue discusses the use made of children's images (in photographs, videos and films). the third issue deals with the implications or the social impact of scientific texts and it asks if it is possible to contribute with data or results, preventing children and young people from suffering the consequences of the institutional situations which are revealed by the research.

Abstract: this text - based on collective interviews conducted in the study forma??o de profissionais da educa??o infantil no estado do rio de janeiro: concep??es, políticas e modos de implementa??o [primary education professional training in the state of rio de janeiro: concepts, policies and implementation modes] - focuses on the theoretic and methodological theme and reference named change. the theoretic reference basis is bakhtin's conception of language, invaluable for understanding the originality with which the subject of change was approached by participants: a metaphor for shaking. the concepts of dialectic ambivalence and dialogism presented themselves as fundamental theoretic tools for the study. the idea of the need for change, accompanied by the desire to change, emerged in almost all interviews. however, it was in an interview conducted with nine teaching professionals that change was mentioned as the educational action itself: one of the teachers interviewed reported that she did not agree with the practice experienced and decided "to give pedagogy a shake".

Abstract: Este trabalho, de natureza teóricoprática, visa apresentar uma alternativa de análise e constru o de currículo. Foi produzido a partir de atividades de assessoria, acompanhamento e avalia o de políticas públicas de educa o de diferentes órg os públicos, especialmente municipais, e está baseado em pesquisas na área, tendo o objetivo de subsidiar a análise crítica de propostas pedagógicas ou curriculares. O texto é orientado pela teoria crítica da cultura e a autora parte do pressuposto de que toda proposta pedagógica é express o de um projeto político e cultural. Destina-se em particular a profissionais que atuam nas redes de ensino regular. A análise aqui desenvolvida tenta sistematizar as principais quest es que precisam ser respondidas na elabora o de projetos curriculares.

Abstract: O texto analisa quest es éticas enfrentadas na pesquisa com crian as de diferentes idades, grupos e contextos. Trata da concep o de infancia subjacente às pesquisas em debate e analisa três quest es. A primeira focaliza os nomes (verdadeiros ou fictícios) de crian as observadas ou entrevistadas e analisa se devem ou n o ser explicitados na apresenta o da pesquisa. A segunda discute a utiliza o de imagens de crian as - seus rostos - em especial a autoriza o do uso de imagens (em fotografias, vídeos ou filmes). A terceira trata das implica es ou do impacto social de resultados de trabalhos científicos e pergunta se é possível contribuir e devolver os achados, evitando que as crian as ou jovens sofram com as repercuss es desse retorno, no interior das institui es educacionais que freqüentam e que foram estudadas na pesquisa. Abstract: the article addresses early child education and the policies set forth for the professional formation in this field. it sought to rescue stories about the education of professionals in charge of the management of early child education at the municipal secretariats of education of the state of rio de janeiro. the text consists of three sections. the first contextualizes the research, addressing issues of methodological nature related to the questionnaire employed in the municipalities and summarizes the data thus obtained. the second section deals with the interviews conducted with these professionals, discussing the theoretic-methodological framework employed, practical aspects related to the conduction of the interviews, and the main categories that emerged from the reports. the third part focuses on the themes of management, identity and education. the interviewed speak about the context within which they work, about hierarchy and power, disclosing situations in which the precariousness, the lack of material and human resources, the lack of preparation, and decisions made on the spur of the moment coexist with dedication, idealism and professional commitment.

Abstract: this article seeks to review the trajectory of the working group ";literacy, reading and writing";, in the period 1991-2001, based on an analysis of diverse historical texts, reports, programmes and abstracts of the annual meetings of anped. it emphasises the principle themes and areas of knowledge, indicates and analyses important advances and fragilities, mapping the development of the working group and revealing aspects of the history of the association itself. the poet carlos drummond, in the year in which we commemorate the centenary of his birth, accompanied us in our review of this period, revealing unseen aspects of the reality under analysis, highlighting simplicity as a criterion. the text is dedicated to magda soares, one of the founders of the working group, with a notable production in this field of study.
