Abstract: objectives: to present consolidated results from two surveys of nosocomial infection incidence, within the framework of argentina's national surveillance of hospital infections program. methods: two editions of the national survey on the incidence of hospital infections in argentina were used, those of 2004 and 2005. of the 68 hospitals, 53 reported data from adult intensive care units (in 2004, 26 units; in 2005, 27), for a total of 359 patients (in 2004, 158 patients; in 2005, 201). the survey was designed as a multicenter, observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study. data analysis was performed with several statistics programs, combining and standardizing variables and both time periods in order to include all the hospitals from the two surveys. results: the prevalence of hospital infection among patients was 24%. of the 127 illnesses, the most frequently occurring was pneumonia (43.3%), which in 85% of the cases was associated with use of a respirator. primary bloodstream infections took second place, at 20.5%, with 61% of these cases being associated with a central catheter. patients given respiratory therapy were at greatest risk (p < 0.001) of developing pneumonia; this was not observed among patients with central or urinary catheters. conclusions: the prevalence of hospital infections, the distribution of primary infection sites, and the associations with risk factors were similar to those observed by other authors in several countries. it is important to understand the local and national issues prior to initiating a surveillance program. surveys such as these, with a national scope and administered by the state, are one way of motivating, raising awareness, and building capacity.
MODELO CONCEPTUAL PARA LA DESERCIóN ESTUDIANTIL UNIVERSITARIA CHILENA
Díaz Peralta,Christian;
Estudios pedagógicos (Valdivia) , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07052008000200004
Abstract: this study proposes a conceptual model that explains the drop/retention as a result of the motivation (positive or negative), which is affected by the academic and social integration. in turn, they are composed of the main features of high school education institutional, family and individual job prospects. in addition, we propose a conceptual model of the dynamic balance of student retention in college by combining academic, social, and institutional factors which illustrates how the student must adapt to changes in the tensions that arise between different factors affecting it.

Abstract: introduction: the estimation of the burned surface area has a huge importance for the acute management and prognosis of the burn victim. it has been revised the different methods available for the assessment of the burn extent and some resuscitation basic concepts. materials and methods: a retrospective descriptive study was made based on the information took from medical records of patients from the burn unit of the san vicente de paul university hospital in medellín (col) during 2004. the initial diagnosis of the burn extension made by the remittent clinician was compared with the ones made by experience clinicians at the emergency room and by the plastic surgeon at the burn unit. the results obtained were processed with the package statistic 6.0 (stafsoft inc) and it was considered significant a p value < 0.05. the variables are presented as absolute values and with their respective percentages. results and conclusions: there were 329 attended patients. 60% of them had mistaken or incomplete diagnosis, and 39.3% of the diagnosis made at our emergency room were incomplete or incorrect. we found more frequently overestimation than underestimation of the burn surface area. in most of the cases mistakes were made that modified the burn category (mild, moderate, and severe). it is necessary to improve basic knowledge about burn care in the inexperience clinicians.

Luna Azul , 2006,

CES Medicina , 2010,
Abstract: community acquired pneumonia is one of the main health problems in children. s. pneumoniae is the most important bacterial microorganism at any age. gram negative bacteria are a rare cause of this entity and when present, they usually are related with several risk factors like immunocompromised host, prolonged hospitalization and antimicrobial therapy, repeated surgical interventions, prolonged use of invasive mechanical ventilation and other medical invasive devices. in this group of bacteria, pseudomonas aeruginosa is the third in order of frequency to cause pneumonia and sepsis in the community setting. it's more widely known as a nosocomial agent. it's very unusual to be community acquired and even rarer in patients without risk factors for infection by this pathogen. in this paper we describe the case of a girl with both community acquired pneumococcal and pseudomonas necrotizing pneumonia and empyema at the same time, without any evidence of a predisposing factor.
