Sonia álvarez Castro,María del Carmen Domínguez Lacayo
Revista Electrónica Educare , 2012,
Abstract: This paper identifies the parameters required to create opportunities that would strengthen the social fabric and would promote a comprehensive development through the artistic expression as a method for expressing feelings and constructing –cultural and social– identities as individuals, which, in our global context have been eroded by the homogenization of experiences.

PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0054375
Abstract: Objective Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men may produce cancer and other major disorders. Men play an important role in the transmission of the virus and act as a reservoir. The aim of this study was to determine the HPV-genotypes and their prevalence in a group of men attending a Sexually Transmitted Infection service. Patients and Samples Between July 2002 and June 2011, 1392 balanopreputial, 435 urethral, 123 anal, and 67 condyloma lesions from 1551 men with a mean age of 35.8±11.3 years old (range: 17–87) were collected for HPV-DNA testing. Methods A fragment of the L1-gene and a fragment of the E6/E7-genes were amplified by PCR. Positive samples were typed by hybridization. Results The HPV genome was detected in 36.9% (486/1318) balanopreputial and in 24.9% (101/405) urethral (p<0.0001) swabs from 38.1% (538) of 1469 men. Co-infections were present in 5.4% (80/1469) of cases. HPV was found in 43.9% (373/850) of men younger than 35 vs. 31.7% (187/589) of men aged >35. HPV was found in 59.4% (104) of 165 men with lesions (macroscopic or positive peniscopy), and in 22.8% (61/267) without clinical alterations. HPV was also detected in 71.4% (40/56) men with condylomata and in 58.7% (64/109) of men with positive peniscopy. Conclusions HPV prevalence in men was high and decreased with age. HPV was found more frequently in balanopreputial than in urethral swabs. There was a low rate of co-infections. Low-risk HPV vaccine genotypes were the most recurrent especially in younger. Although HPV has been associated with clinical alterations, it was also found in men without any clinical presentation. Inclusion of men in the national HPV vaccination program may reduce their burden of HPV-related disease and reduce transmission of the virus to non-vaccinated women.
Lopes, Sonia de Castro;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742009000200013
Abstract: aligned with the theme of the history of educational institutions and focusing on teacher education, this article aims to assess the changes implemented in the teacher education programme conducted by the institute of education of rio de janeiro, during the new state period (1937-1945). initially called escola de professores ['teachers' school'], when the institute was founded in 1932, the programme was later taken up by the federal district university (1935,) under the name of escola de educa??o ['school of education'] and provided primary and secondary school teachers with higher education, in compliance with the manifesto of new education pioneers (1932). with the closing down of the federal district university in 1939 and the transference of several courses to the recently established university of brazil, the institute of education was excluded from the new project and was able only to provide primary teachers with secondary education certificates. this article exploits the transition that the institute went through, highlighting changes and continuities in relation to its original proposition. the article then focuses on the unfolding of the rupture caused by the secondary education organic law (1942), leading to significant changes in the teacher education programme offered by the institution.

Lopes, Sonia de Castro;
Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-24782008000100008
Abstract: this article uses photographic images to highlight the key role played by the rio de janeiro institute of education as one of the most significant experiential spaces of the new education. it deals with a privileged legacy site (nora, 1993) of this reform movement which, as a centre of excellence in teacher education, served as a point of reference for the whole country throughout the 1930s. the images that were analysed were published by the periodical arquivos do instituto de educa??o (archives of the institute of education) which was launched in 1934 under the auspices of the secretariat of education of the federal district. this article seeks to surpass the concept of photography as mere illustration for written texts and to regard photography as a historical source that requires a specific theoretical and methodological construction.

(This paper seeks to show te reach of pragma-dialectics by describing and analyzing speakers' competence in the identification of fallacies in argumentative speech. The corpus selected comprises a set of sixty seven letters by 35 different authors written in response to an opinion column by Agustín Squella entitled " Es Ud. católico?" ("Are you a Catholic?"). Fallacies were analyzed in all letters answering the question and recognition markers were searched for such fallacies. Results indicate that speakers are capable of identifying and rejecting fallacies as arguments but this does not occur in most cases. "Ad hominem" is the most recognized and also the most widely used fallacy.)
Dissecting genetic effects with imprinting
José M. álvarez-Castro
Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fevo.2014.00051
Abstract: Models of genetic effects are mathematical representations of a genotype-to-phenotype (GP) map that, rather than accounting for a raw map assigning phenotypes to genotypes, rely on parameters with deliberate evolutionary meaning—additive and interaction effects. In this article, the conceptual particularities of genetic imprinting and their implications on models of genetic effects are analyzed. The molecular mechanisms by which imprinted loci affect the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes are known to be singular. Despite its epigenetic nature, the (parent-of-origin-dependent) way in which the alleles of imprinted genes are modified and segregate in each generation is precisely determined, and thus amenable to be represented through conventional models of genetic effects. The Natural and Orthogonal Interactions (NOIA) model framework is here extended to account for imprinting as a tool for a more thorough analysis of the evolutionary implications of this phenomenon. The resulting theory improves and generalizes previous proposals for modeling imprinting.

Abstract: retrospective study reviewing the characteristics and evolution of all incident patients in segovia, during the period 2000-2005. the main objective was to describe the role of the predialysis clinic (pdc) in the selection of the kind of dialysis (hemo or peritoneal), the availability of a functioning access (either a vascular access or a peritoneal catheter) at the beginning of treatment, and in hepatitis b vaccination. we reviewed 123 patients of who 99 started haemodialysis (hd) and 24 chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (capd). 97 patients were seen in the pdc and were followed up for a mean period of 26 months (range 1-126). of them, 76 started hd and 21 capd. at the time of starting hemodialysis, 92% of the patients seen in the pdc had a functioning vascular access and 56,5% of them started as outpatients (not needing hospitalization). at the time of starting capd, all 21 patients had a functioning peritoneal catheter and all of them started as outpatients. twenty two patients had hepatitis b antibodies. 70,6% of the patients no previously inmmunized had received four doses and 20,6% had received at least two doses of hepatitis b vaccination, prior to starting on dialysis. this results shows that pdc improves the attention to patients with stage 5 chronic renal disease since: it permits to take an informed decision, by the patient and its family, of the preferred kind of dialysis; it facilitates the standardization of follow-up; it permits the timely construction of an adequate vascular access or peritoneal catheter, as well as the complete hepatitis b vaccination; and, in summary, improves efficiency, diminish morbimortality and preserves patients wellbeing.
