Revista Estudos Feministas , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-026X2001000100004
Abstract: this is a gender study on the artistic production of ceramic in some communities of jequitinhonha valley, minas gerais, brazil. traditionally only women, who were called 'potters', produced this kind of craft in that region and it used to be taught from mothers to daughters. as ceramic artifacts became an alternative source of income, men decided to produce them. the entrance of men in the craft caused some re-elaboration of gender relations in those communities, and allowed us to detect gender not as a set of fixed corporifications, but as something under constant construction. a very important point here is that, although transmitted by women and a result of feminine activity, the production of ceramic incorporated male values. when men gained access to a traditionally defined feminine activity, they were able to draw from the craft symbolic resources for the representation of masculinity.

Abstract: The angiotensin receptors type 1 (AT1) have affinity by Losartan®, low affinity to non-peptides antagonists and similar effect as Angiotensin-convert-enzyme inhibitors. It have been reported that natural and synthetic products might reduce the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects related to stannous chloride (SnCl2). SnCl2 is used in nuclear medicine as a reducing agent to obtain technetium-99 m-radiopharmaceuticals. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cellular effects produced by a solution of Losartan® (25 mg/ml) on the survival of Escherichia coli AB1157 in the presence and absence of SnCl2, and on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes of the blood of Wistar rats. Briefly, blood sample was withdrawn by Wistar rats with heparinized syringe and incubated with Losartan® solution. Saline (NaCL 0.9%) was used as a control. The samples were gently mixed with hypotonic solutions of NaCl. After that it was centrifuged and the supernadant isolated for optical determination of the hemoglobin present. E. coli AB1157 cultures (exponential growth phase) were collected by centrifugation, washed and resuspended in 0.9%NaCl. Samples were incubated in water bath shaker with: (a) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml), (b) Losartan® (25 mg/ml) and (c) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml) + Losartan® (25 mg/ml). Incubation with 0.9% NaCl was also carried out (control). At 60 min intervals, aliquots were withdrawn, diluted, spread onto Petri dishes with solid LB medium and incubated overnight. The colonies formed were counted and the survival fractions calculated. Statistical analysis was performed. The results showed that there was a significantly increase (P < 0.05) in the osmotic fragility of the blood cells treated with Losartan®. Moreover, Losartan® was also able to protect the E. coli cultures against the lesive action of SnCl2. Although, in erythrocyte the osmotic fragility was increased by the presence of Losartan® that could 1) alter the physical properties of this cell, or 2) had a direct or indirect effect on the intracellular sodium concentration or 3) had acted on the cardiovascular system. It suggested that the Losartan® did interfere strongly with cellular metabolism and did alter the survival fractions of E. coli AB1157.

Abstract: this transversal study aims to identify vulnerability experienced by adolescents of public secondary schools in cuiabá, mato grosso, brazil. the results show that 10.5% of the boys and 5.8% of the girls have already used illicit drugs - at the age of 15, cocaine (28.9%) and marijuana (15.7%) being the most reported; 45.2% of the boys and 52.4% of the girls consume alcoholic beverages, being beer the most common. among those who declared to be smoker (16.0%), the majority began smoking at the age of 15. sexual violence was reported, out of which only 33.3% of the boys and 25.0% of the girls sought help. among those who did not seek help, the referred motive was fear and shame. the need for specific prevention and treatment services for adolescents in vulnerable situations is stressed, in view of the occurrence and consequences of this kind of harm.
Generic Method for Merging Satellite and Historical Ground Station Data to Design Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves in Recordless Sub-Saharian Countries  [PDF]

Open Journal of Modern Hydrology (OJMH) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojmh.2018.84008
Abstract: The availability of long-term rainfall records is essential to conduct a serious frequency analysis in order to estimate the effective precipitation depth. The development of the process of elaboration of IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves for a given location requires very precise data, at least with daily frequency, obtained through the use of rainfall records. The present study presents a method used to merge historical precipitation data with the latest data collected by satellite in order to perform graphs with IDF curves in places where rainfall records are scarce. The homogeneity of the data used is analyzed in order to guarantee its statistical utility and the frequency analysis was performed with the statistical distributions of Extreme Values Type I (Gumbel), Gamma, Pearson Type III and finally with Log-Pearson Type III, in order to verify which one of them applies better to the sites chosen for this analysis: the cities of Benguela and Lobito in the south of Angola. Daily rainfall data from the TRMM mission and historical daily data were used to derive the relationships between the maximum daily precipitation and the sub-daily precipitation values. From the observed daily data, techniques of disaggregation of the collected data were used, in order to generate a synthetic precipitation sequence with the extreme values in periods of time inferior to the daily one, with statistical properties similar to the registered data. Then IDF equations are established, with which the occasional storm depth is calculated for various return periods and various durations and, after them, the IDF curves are drawn for these two geographic stations.
