Vitimiza??o por homicídios segundo características de ra?a no Brasil
Soares Filho,Adauto Martins;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102011005000045
Abstract: objective: to describe the temporal patterns of mortality by homicide in brazil. methods: a series of homicides in brazil from 2000 to 2009 were studied. the explanatory variables were race/skin color, gender and education. the death statistics were obtained from the mortality information system. a trend analysis was performed by means of a polynomial regression for a historic time series (p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval). results: the black population represented 69% of the homicide victims in 2009. the homicide rate increased in the black population, while it decreased in the white population in the period studied. the homicide rate increased in groups with both higher and lower education among blacks; among whites, the rate decreased for those with the lowest level of schooling and remained stable in the group with higher educational levels. in 2009, blacks had a higher risk of death than whites from homicide, regardless of education level. between 2004 and 2009, the homicide rate decreased in the white population, while it increased in the black population. conclusions: the relative risk of falling victim to homicide increased in the black population, suggesting an increase in inequality. the effect of the anti-gun measures implemented in brazil in 2004 was positive in the white population and less pronounced in the black population. overall, race/skin color predicted the occurrence of homicide.
Mapping of the Water Table Levels of Unconfined Aquifers Using Two Interpolation Methods  [PDF]
Oswaldo Augusto Filho, Wanessa Soares, Clemente Iriguay Fernandéz
Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2016.84040
Abstract: The spatial prediction of the water table can be used for many applications related to civil works (foundations, excavations) and other urban and environmental management activities. Deterministic and geostatistical interpolation methods were used to predict the spatial distribution of water table levels (unconfined aquifers) of important geological formations of the Joao Pessoa City (capital of Paraiba State, Brazil) with dense urban occupation and high demand for new civil works. The deterministic (topo to raster) and geostatistical (ordinary kriging) interpolation methods were evaluated using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based investigation. The water table levels were obtained from 276 boring logs of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in situ investigation distributed over the geological formations studied (an area of 59.8 km2, covering 40 districts of the Joao Pessoa City). The Nspt values and textural characterization data are stored for levels of 1 m depth. Some boreholes located in the area investigated were not included in the interpolation processes in order to be compared with estimated values (validation of the results). Maps of the water table depths were also produced to further analyze the quality of the water table surfaces interpolated by both methods. The phreatic surface interpolations provided satisfactory results for both methods (RMSE = 1.8 m). The topo to raster method showed a slight general tendency to be less affected by local values in relation to the kriging method and also has the advantage of integrating the drainage flow system, which is a relevant aspect for spatial models of the water table levels of unconfined aquifers. The ordinary kriging (geostatistical method) provides a prediction surface and some measure of the certainty or accuracy of the predictions.
Basic biological aspects of Tritrichomonas foetus of re-levance to the treatment of bovines suffering of tricho-moniasis  [PDF]

Open Journal of Animal Sciences (OJAS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ojas.2011.13015
Abstract: Tritrichomonas foetus is a flagellate protozoan and the etiological agent of bovine genital tri-chomoniasis [1], which is an infectious vene- real disease. This parasite is usually found as- sociated with the mucosal surface of the uro- genital tract in females or the male preputial and penile membranes. In females, the clinical ma-nifestations may include abortion, with repe- tition of estrus at irregular intervals, vaginitis, cervicitis, endometritis, and pyometra. Parasi- tized males may have a discharge with small nodules in the preputial membrane. After that, the bulls have no clinical symptoms, and are thus an asymptomatic carrier that may spread the infection. Considering that a bull could cover up to twenty females [2], bovine genital trichomoniasis is a serious medical and veteri- nary problem, with economical repercussion for beef and milk production. As T. foetus is an amitochondrial and aerotolerant organism, en- ergy production under low O2 tension in the protozoan is done via hydrogenosome, which, as the name suggests, is the organelle where H2 is generated [3,4,5]. The molecular machinery of mitochondrial cell death is, therefore, absent in this parasite and the mechanism that activates of cell death program is not clear. This review seeks to understand the characteristics of the protozoan parasite T. foetus in order to propose new therapies for animals suffering from this infectious and contagious agent.
Caracteriza??o do mercado de fretes rodoviários para produtos agrícolas
Soares, Marcelo Gimenes;Caixeta Filho, José Vicente;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1997000200007
Abstract: the brazilian highway freight market is subject to no sort of government control, meaning that the prices are formed through free negotiation between supply and demand of the transport service. carriers have to be updated on every variable incorporated in costs to be fit for negotiating with demanders. these demanders, except under certain very specific circumstances, have performed higher negotiation power and exerted quite strong pressure to obtain freight discounts. taking into consideration the accomplishment of the quality of freight information, for both supply and demand sides of the transportation service, data for selected agricultural commodities were collected, as well as the identification of the main characteristics of the road haulage. the difference in the freight values for each commodity was noted, as was the distinct freight market structure for grains (sugar, corn, soybeans and soybean meal), which has been more spread out and perhaps less professional if compared with the transportation market for liquids, such as orange juice and soybean oil.
Numerical modeling of the response of Ceará continental shelf waters to wind stress forcing
Soares, Jacyra;Castro Filho, Belmiro Mendes de;
Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87591996000200004
Abstract: ceará shelf waters response to steady and transicnt wind forcing, from ponta cajuais (04°42's, 37°19.5'w) to ponta de itapagé (02°50.5's, 40000'w), was studied using a hydrodynamic numerical model. the finitc difference model was based upon the equations for a barotropic ocean in general form: advective and quadratic surface and bottom stress terms were included. seasonal differences in the shelf waters response were characterized by simulation of summer and winter forcing. such experiments wcre conducted for both f and equatorial beta plane domains, without significative differences in the results. transient shelf waters response were investigated using surface winds from the fortaleza airport , during the period extending from 14/03 to 25/03n9. model results were compared to current data collected during the same period; modeled currents were able to roughly describe observed current pattem, but not current intensity.

Martiningo Filho, Antonio;Siqueira, Marcus Vinicius Soares;
RAM. Revista de Administra??o Mackenzie , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-69712008000500002
Abstract: this essay analyses the procedure of moral harassment in organizations and the role of the human resources management area, specially, in practices adopted for identifying and managing work circumstances factors which may propitiate the appearance of the moral harassment phenomenon. in order to accomplish this objective we have used a new point of view, since most researches show the view of harassed employees, of victims, and in this essay, we have tried to analyze managers' perception of moral harassment in work environment and what is the best way for organizations to avoid this to happen. since organizations are looking for a more ethical orientation and the improvement of work environment, the discussion of this subject has a huge significance. from this point of view, the analysis identified that employees feel safer in denouncing cases of moral harassment in enterprises with a clear policy about the subject, with appropriated communication channels, with a less hierarchical work structure, and with a respectful and trustful organizational climate.
Métodos de pontos interiores para problema de fluxo de potência ótimo DC

Sba: Controle & Automa??o Sociedade Brasileira de Automatica , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-17592003000300007
Abstract: the primal-dual and predictor-corrector versions of interior point methods are developed for an optimal dc power flow model where kirchhoff law's are represented by a network flow model with surrogate constraints. the resulting matrix structure is explored reducing the linear system to be solved either to the number of buses or to the number of independent loops, leading to very fast iterations. either matrix is invariant and can be factored off-line. as a consequence of such matrix manipulations, a linear system which changes at each iteration must be solved; its size, however, reduces to the number of generating units. numerical results with c implementation are presented for ieee test systems and large scale brazilian systems. the interior point method shows to be robust, achieving fast convergence in all instances tested.
