Some addition to the Hyphomycetes from India

Abstract: This paper deals with the three new species of Alternaria Nees ex Fr. viz., A. aracearum on Raphidophora pertusa Scht. (Aracaceae), A.bundelkhandae on Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De wit.(Mimosaceae), and A.cryptostegiae on Cryptostegia grandiflora R.Br. (Asclepiadaceae) collected from forest plants of Madhya Pradesh. The new fungal forms were described , illustrated and compared with allied taxa.
Antioxidants deficiency: a sensitive indicator of cardiometabolic risk in chronic renal failure?

Abstract: Background: Antioxidant depletion occurring in chronic renal failure patients is an important cause of associated morbidity & mortality, which in turn imposes a great socioeconomic burden of health care. Early diagnosis & targeted management of this preventable deficiency may have a positive impact on the management of co morbidities associated with chronic renal failure. Aims & Objectives: To evaluate the status of antioxidants as an early indicator of cardiometabolic risk in chronic renal failure patients. Settings & Design: This was a randomised case Control study including 10 controls of either sex with normal renal function between age group 20-60 years and 15 patients of chronic renal failure on dialysis between the age group of 16 - 60 years. Methods: 12 hour fasting venous blood samples were collected from all the participants and were assayed for various antioxidants. Statistical analysis: Results were analyzed by unpaired t test, p value was determined & Correlation coefficient was calculated amongst various parameters. Results: In the present study, significantly low levels of vitamin C ( Cases: 0.367 ± 0.13 mg/dl controls: 1.324 ± 0.61 mg/dl; p < 0.01) & vitamin E (cases: 0.235 ± 0.102 mg/dl, controls (0.854 ± 0.28 mg/dl; p < 0.01) were observed in chronic renal failure patients as compared to controls. Conclusion: Diminished levels of Vitamin C & E in our study may be an indicator of increased oxidative stress which can be a responsible factor for increased incidence of cardiovascular complications. Supplementing these patients with recommended dosage of these vitamins may provide an essential tool to reduce the burden of suffering. [Int J Res Med Sci 2013; 1(2.000): 87-92]
Role of Efflux Pumps and Intracellular Thiols in Natural Antimony Resistant Isolates of Leishmania donovani

Abstract: Background In view of the recent upsurge in the phenomenon of therapeutic failure, drug resistance in Leishmania, developed under natural field conditions, has become a great concern yet little understood. Accordingly, the study of determinants of antimony resistance is urgently warranted. Efflux transporters have been reported in Leishmania but their role in clinical resistance is still unknown. The present study was designed to elucidate the mechanism of natural antimony resistance in L. donovani field isolates by analyzing the functionality of efflux pump(s) and expression profiles of known genes involved in transport and thiol based redox metabolism Methodology/Principal Findings We selected 7 clinical isolates (2 sensitive and 5 resistant) in addition to laboratory sensitive reference and SbIII resistant mutant strains for the present study. Functional characterization using flow cytometry identified efflux pumps that transported substrates of both P-gp and MRPA and were inhibited by the calmodulin antagonist trifluoperazine. For the first time, verapamil sensitive efflux pumps for rhodamine 123 were observed in L. donovani that were differentially active in resistant isolates. RT-PCR confirmed the over-expression of MRPA in isolates with high resistance index only. Resistant isolates also exhibited consistent down regulation of AQP1 and elevated intracellular thiol levels which were accompanied with increased expression of ODC and TR genes. Interestingly, γ-GCS is not implicated in clinical resistance in L. donovani isolates. Conclusions/Significance Here we demonstrate for the first time, the role of P-gp type plasma membrane efflux transporter(s) in antimony resistance in L. donovani field isolates. Further, decreased levels of AQP1 and elevated thiols levels have emerged as biomarkers for clinical resistance.

Abstract: This study reports lovastatin production by solid state fermentation using pomegranate seeds as a substrate. Six different fungal strains and several agro-industrial wastes were selected and screened. Various physico-chemical parameters were optimized to improve lovastatin. Moreover, chemical mutation was systematically employed to enhance lovastatin yield on selected strains. Productivity of 3 ± 0.06 mg lovastatin/gm dfm was obtained prior to optimization. One factor a time followed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) gave 4.2 ± 0.10 mg lovastatin/gm dfm yield in an optimized setup with pomegranate seed powder (5 gms), KH2PO4 (0.1% w/v), glucose (5% w/v), moisture (60% w/w), pH 5 in a 15 days fermentation cycle. The production was further increased to 6.5 ± 0.08 mg lovastatin/gm dfm through chemical mutation of the strain. This process is simple and reproducible for the production of lovastatin using pomegranate seed as an agro-industrial waste.
Ab-Initio Structural Study of SrMoO3 Perovskite  [PDF]

Abstract: The equilibrium crystal structure parameter and bulk modulus of the SrMoO3 perovskite has been calculated with ab-initio method based on density functional theory (DFT) using both local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The corresponding total free energy along with its various components for SrMoO3 was obtained. The lattice parameter and bulk modulus calculated for SrMoO3 within LDA are 3.99 A and 143.025 GPa respectively whereas within GGA are 4.04 A and 146.14 GPa respectively, both agree well with the available experimental data. The total energy calculated within LDA and GGA is almost the same however lower results are obtained for GGA. All calculations have been carried out using ABINIT computer code.

Abstract: The forward voltage of GaAlAs semiconductor diode has been measured in the temperature range 50 K - 300 K and for current values between 10 nA and 450 μA. The forward voltage as a function of temperature is least-squares fitted and the coefficients are given. The 1st and 2nd order least-squares fitting has high temperature root between 400 K and 950 K. The presence of the high temperature root indicates that the fitted polynomials are of similar character. The high temperature root is found to increase for the least squares fitted polynomials corresponding to higher current values.

Abstract:

We have carried out micro-canonical Monte Carlosimulations of a planar rotator model in 30 × 30 lattice using periodic boundary conditions. The energy distribution of the rotator in the lattice shows features that can be associated with spin wave and vortex excitations. The results supplement the first-order transition observed in canonicalMonte Carlosimulation, due to vortex nucleation. We also see features that can be associated with the in-homogeneity of vortex charge in the critical region.
