Abstract: With the growing concerns about sustainable energy, energy efficiency and energy security, the electrical power system is undergoing major changes. Distributed energy sources are becoming widely available at the lower parts of the grid. As a result, more and more end consumers are transforming from passive consumers to active “prosumers” that can autonomously generate, store, import and/or export power. As prosumers increasingly dominate the power system, the system demands capability that allows enormous number of stakeholders with heterogeneous types to exchange power on the grid. Unfortunately, the classical power system cannot efficiently handle this scenario since it was designed for centralized power distribution. Thus, restructuring the rather old power system is indispensable. In this paper, we apply the holonic approach to structure the smart grid as a system that is bottom-up organized from autonomous prosumers that are recursively clustered at various aggregation layers. Based on this, we present a control architecture of the smart grid using holonic concepts. Our control architecture is characterized by autonomy of the prosumers, distributed control, recursive self-similar control structures at different aggregation levels. Further, we present a service oriented architecture (SOA) framework that models the control functions that make up the holonic control architecture. Our proposed control architecture is tested using a simulation set-up.

Abstract:

The smart grid will be a power grid more “aware” of its operating state and having the ability to self-heal. These features may be incorporated into the grid by implementing a phasor measurement units based wide area measurement system. Such a system will help in better real time monitoring and control of the grid. However, the wide area measurement system is subject to challenges with respect to its security. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis of security issues with a wide area measurement system is presented and the research efforts required to be taken are identified. Moreover, the effect of communication failure on a PMU installed system has been presented using integer linear programming.

Abstract:

With urging problem of energy and pollution, smart grid is becoming ever important. By gradually changing the actual power grid system, smart grid may evovle into different systems by means of size, elements and strategies, but its fundamental requirements and objectives will not change such as optimizing production, transmission and consumption. Studying the smart grid through modeling and simulation provides us with valuable results which can not be obtained in real world due to time and cost related constraints. However, due to the complexity of the smart grid, achieving optimization is not an easy task, even using computer models. In this paper, we propose an complex system based approach to the smart grid modeling, accentuating on the optimization by combining game theoretical and classical methods in different levels. Thanks to this combination, the optimization can be achieved with flexibility and scalability, while keeping its generality.

Abstract: Integration of unpredictable renewable power sources into the Grid is leading to the development of wide area control algorithms and smart grid. Smart meters are the first step in the building a smart consumer interface. Much more, however, would be required in building a smart grid than just smart meters. This paper explores the conceptual architecture of smart grid. It highlights the need for additional infrastructure to realize full potential of smart grid. The information presented in this paper is an attempt to uncover what the future in smart grid could be and what infrastructure would be required to tap its potential. As smart grid evolves, more functionality would be built in the constituents. The paper also proposes mathematical basis for some of the controller algorithms.

Abstract: Prepaid energy meters have been widely adopted by utilities in different countries across the world as an innovative solution to the problem of affordability and consumption management. However, the present smart card based systems have some inherent problems like added cost, low availability and lack of security. In the future Smart Grid paradigm, use of smart meters can completely overhaul these prepaid systems by introducing centralized accounting, monitoring and credit-control functions using state-of-the-art telecommunication technologies like WiMAX. In this paper we pro-pose a prepaid smart metering scheme for Smart Grid application based on centralized authentication and charging using the WiMAX prepaid accounting model. We then discuss its specific application to Demand Response and Roam-ing of Electrical Vehicles.

Abstract: The most promising and most feasible application of solar-wind hybrid energy is in the area of space and service water heating. Since these heating processes require only moderate temperatures, they can be easily achieved by the use of low-cost flat-plate collectors and low cut-in wind turbines. As the heating of buildings and provision of hot water account for a very significant percent of the total energy consumption in Cleveland, the diversion of these energy demands to solar-wind hybrid energy would result in a substantial relief of our dependence on fossil fuels and other forms of energy resources.

Abstract: Air-conditioning (AC) systems have the highest power consumption among the appliances and consumer devices used at residential homes and buildings. Reducing their energy use will lower peak time usage and lower CO2 emissions. Recently, employment of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to the power grid has smartened the grid. In the smart grid new opportunities emerge for AC energy consumption control. The aim of this paper is to reduce the air conditioning energy consumption of residential customers. It proposes an architecture that provides easy management and control using sensor network web services. A simulation thermal model of a house considers house data and outside temperature is presented. Simulation results showed a proposed temperature control method can have significant energy saving while maintaining customer comfort.

In this paper we will present the Smart grid policy and law in Jordan by studying Tafila smart grid as a case study. One can see variety of problems and challenges in the field of Smart Grid. Hence, this paper can provide a help to find a new research point in this field. Also in this paper we try to recommend develop implementation strategy that will help to generate appropriate smart grid & Energy Efficiency Law.
