A numerical method to simulate the coupled oscillations of flexible structures in flowing fluids

Abstract: A numerical method is developed to simulate the coupled phenomena in a fluid-flexible-structure system. Specifically, a two-dimensional panel method is used to calculate the hydrodynamic forces and a modal superposition method is adopted to solve the governing equation of an Eulerian beam. The stability boundary of a single flexible beam in a uniform flow is calculated and compared with previous results to verify the validity of the code. The flow-induced flapping of a single and two flexible bodies for S=1.0, U*=7.0 are investigated. For the flow-induced vibration of a single beam, the oscillation frequency is close to the secondary natural frequency of a cantilever. For two parallel flexible beams, they oscillate in phase when the non-dimensional separating distance H<0.25. When H>0.25, the out-of-phase mode occurs with a jump in frequency. When H>1, the interaction between the two beams decouples and the frequency and forces of each beam revert to behavior associated with a single beam in the same flow. Simulations of coupled-flapping of two tandem flexible structures proved that the drag acting on the upstream body is reduced while for that downstream drag is obviously increased when the structures are closely arranged. The numerical results obtained in the present work are qualitatively consistent with early experimental results.

Abstract: Due to the suddenness, uncertainty and huge loss of political risks in overseas projects, this paper considers the time dimension and the success rate of project exploitation for the goal of optimizing the allocation of multiple objectives, such as output, investment, efficiency and risk. A linear portfolio risk decision model is proposed for multiple indicators, such as the uncertainty of project survey results, the inconsistency of project investment time, and the number of projects in unstable political regions. The model is tested by numerical examples and the results show that the model can effectively maximize the portfolio income within the risk tolerance range under the premise of ensuring the rational allocation of resources.
Kinematics and forces of a flexible body in Karman vortex street

Abstract: Experiments of a flexible filament in the wake of a cylinder and in free stream were conducted in a vertical soap film tunnel. The experiments distinctly visualized the movement of the filament. Based on the experimental kinematic results, a 2-d panel method was used to calculate the forces acting on the filament. The experiment and numerical results revealed that different from that in free stream, the filament in Karman vortex street flapped at the same frequency as the vortex street, and with smaller amplitude and larger curvature. The filament suffered an evident thrust in Karman vortex street, while a drag appeared in the case of free stream. The dependence of the drag coefficient on the phase relation between the movement of the filament and the Karman vortex street was also studied.
Control synthesis for a class of nonlinear systems based on partition of unity

Abstract: A partition-of-unity-based approach is proposed to derive an approximate model for a class of nonlinear systems. The precision of the approximate model is analyzed by using the modulus of continuity of continuous functions. The system stability of the approximate model is analyzed by using Lyapunov stability theory. A design algorithm for constructing tracking controllers with tracking performance related to tracking error is given based on the approximate model and the partition of unity method.
The output feedback control for uncertain nonholonomic systems

Abstract: This paper considers the problems of almost asymptotic stabilization and global asymptotic regulation (GAR) by output feedback for a class of uncertain nonholonomic systems. By combining the nonsmooth change of coordinates and output feedback domination design together, we construct a simple linear time-varying output feedback controller, which can universally stabilize a whole family of uncertain nonholonomic systems. The simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
Rapid induction of mRNAs forPC3 by partial hepatectomy and epidermal growth factor

Abstract: The expression of immediate early gene plays a pivotal role in rat hepatocyte proliferation from G0 to G1 phases and the progression through G1 phase of the cell cycle within several hours after 2/3 hepatectomy. We investigated the different gene expressions within 1 h after 2/3 hepatectomy by representational difference analysis. Sequence analysis indicated thatPC3 induced by NGF was a kind of immediate early gene and might be correlated with liver regeneration. Moreover, we found that 2/3 hepatectomy could induce the expressing ofPC3 mRNA by Northern blot with a peak 1–2 h after surgery. In primary cultures of rat hepatocytes, addition of EGF resulted in rapid and transient induction ofPC3 mRNA. It was first reported thatPC3 gene belongs to immediate early gene associated with liver regeneration.

The Cost of Treating Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Estimates from the Chinese Experience

Abstract: Background Because of the potentially significant economic burden of healthcare costs associated with many diseases, it is critical that regulatory and medical insurance organisations collect and utilise data on the cost-effectiveness of care provision to make rational policy decisions. However, little is known about healthcare costs in China. Methodology/Principal Findings Based on health expenditure data for 253 cases of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) registered at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in China between 2006 and 2010, the cost of care provision was analysed. The monthly and aggregate annual medical costs were estimated for patients who were in either a progression-free state (PFS) or a disease-progression state (DPS). Monthly healthcare costs accumulated during the terminal 3 months were collected separately. The mean cost of treatment for PFS and DPS patients over one year was approximately US$11,566 and $14,519, respectively. The monthly costs for all patients were higher initially than in the subsequent months (PFS: $2,490; DPS: $2,503). For PFS patients, healthcare expenditures stabilised after the 7th month, with a mean monthly medical expenditure of $82.49. For DPS patients, expenditures stabilised after the 9th month, and the mean expenditure during the 9th month was $307.9. Medical care costs in the three successive months prior to death were $3,754, $5,829 and $7,372, respectively. Conclusions/Significance The economic evaluation of health care technologies is becoming ever more important in China, especially in disease areas for which new and expensive therapies are being introduced on a regular basis. This is first paper to present empirically estimated China-specific costs associated with the treatment of NSCLC. The cost estimates are presented in a format that is specifically intended to inform cost-effectiveness analyses of treatments for NSCLC, and hence, contribute to the more efficient allocation of limited healthcare resources in China.

Abstract: The problem of robust decentralized output feedback control of uncertain similar composite system is discussed. The system under consideration is with uncertainties in every subsystem and the interconnections. These uncertainties may be nonlinear, time varying and bounded, but the bounds are unknown and the uncertainties meet the matching condition. The controller guarantees that the state of the system converges to the equilibrium point or the finial attractor centered at the equilibrium point of the system.
