BMC Medical Genetics , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2350-13-119
Abstract: Background Emerging evidence has shown that miRNAs are involved in human carcinogenesis as tumor suppressors or oncogenes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in pre-miRNAs may affect the processing and therefore, influence the expression of mature miRNAs. Previous studies generated conflicting results when reporting association between the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 common polymorphism and breast cancer. Methods This study evaluated the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 SNP in 388 breast cancer cases and 388 controls in Brazilian women. Polymorphism was determined by real-time PCR; control and experimental groups were compared through statistical analysis using the X2 or Fisher’s exact tests. Results The analysis of the SNPs frequencies showed a significant difference between the groups (BC and CT) in regards to genotype distribution (χ2: p = 0.024); the homozygous variant (CC) was more frequent in the CT than in the BC group (p = 0.009). The presence of the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 C/T polymorphism was not associated with histological grades (p = 0.522), axillary lymph node positive status (p = 0.805), or clinical stage (p = 0.670) among the breast cancer patients. Conclusions The results of this study indicated that the CC polymorphic genotype is associated with a decreased risk of BC and the presence of the T allele was significantly associated with an increased risk of BC.
Rigidity of marginally outer trapped 2-spheres
Abrao Mendes
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In a recent work, Galloway [9] proved a local foliation theorem by MOTSs for a 3-dimensional initial data set $(M,g,K)$ with mean curvature $\tau\le0$ in a 4-dimensional spacetime $(\overline M,\overline g)$ when (under suitable assumptions) $M$ has a stable spherical MOTS $\Sigma$ which achieves an upper bound for the area. He proved that each leaf is a round 2-sphere with the same constant Gaussian curvature. Here, we improve his result by dropping the hypothesis on the mean curvature of $M$ and showing that each leaf is a minimal surface. We show that in an outer neighborhood $U$ of $\Sigma$, the metric $g$ splits as the product $([0,\varepsilon)\times\Sigma,dt^2+g_0)$, where $(\Sigma,g_0)$ is a round 2-sphere. In fact, we prove that the outer neighborhood $U$ can be isometrically embedded into the 4-dimensional Nariai spacetime $(\overline N,\overline h)$ as a spacelike hypersurface so that $g|_U$ is the induced metric from $\overline N$ and $K|_U$ is the second fundamental form of $U$ in $\overline N$. This completely classifies the local geometry of such initial data sets.

Biblionline , 2010,
Abstract: This study deals with the articulations madeby and between the community libraries, identifying them through the Network Brasilof Community Libraries (RBBC). Thecommunity libraries have been evolving inrecent years. Their role within the nationalscenario is to allow access to reading to apopulation that often is excluded from publicpolicy. The RBBC, which appeared inNovember 2009, consists of a social network, itstands out for its ability to bring peopletogether around the theme CommunityLibraries, making interaction and discussionpossible among its members. From thediscussions fostered in RBBC, we observed theexistence of various types of relationshipsestablished by the Community Libraries withboth the people in their surroundings and withinstitutions such as private companies, NGOsand even the local authorities. Thus, itidentifies the users of RBBC, categorizingthem according to their role in communitylibraries and analyzes the differentarticulations developed by these libraries. Thisis a qualitative study. The study populationconsists of 440 members; the sample iscomposed of 78 individuals who have alreadyparticipated in any discussion forum on thenet. Data were analyzed through descriptivestatistics, where there was the distribution of groups in the following categories: membersresearching community libraries (12),members interested in the subject (33),members participating in individual initiatives(8), members participating in collectiveinitiatives (14) and members participating ingovernment initiatives (11). In a secondmoment we will verify how the constructions ofthese articulations occur and what are theirresults in the relations of the members. Theexpected results come from the observation ofthe relationships built which strengthen thevarious links of interest of the members ofRBBC and the members’ perceptions about thescope of this channel.

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2013.45112

Aims: This study examined whether genetic polymorphisms of tobacco and alcohol-related metabolic genes such as GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, CYP1A1, CYP2E1 and DNA repair genes (XRCC1 194Trp, XRCC1 399Gln, and XRCC3 Met) contribute to the risk of developing OSCC. Methods: Patients eligible for inclusion were over 18 years, had pathologically confirmed OSCC and were followed prospectively for at least two years or until death, from December 2000 to December 2004. Ninety-two OSCC patients were included along with 244 subjects from the same hospital, evaluated in the same period as patients without cancer, as the control group. Results: GSTM1 null and XRCC1-194Trp alone increased the risk of OSCC (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.2 - 3.6 and OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.01 - 4.03, respectively). The joint effect of GSTM1 null with CYP1A1 or CYP2E1 polymorphism increased the risk two to threefold. Similar results were observed when XRCC1-194Trp was combined with GSTM1 null or the CYP2E1 polymorphism. By contrast, XRCC1- 399Gln was associated with protection against OSCC. Gene-gene and gene-environmental interactions were mainly detected for CYP1A1 and GSTP1 associated with more than 20 p/y of tobacco and XRCC1-194Trp when more than 30 g/L/d of alcohol was consumed (OR, 8.8; 95% CI; 1.3 - 45.7). Conclusions: The drug metabolizing and DNA repair enzyme polymorphisms may be informative for clinicians in the preventive management of patients at risk, particularly those with strong smoking and drinking habits.

Abstract: soil particle-size analysis by gamma-ray attenuation was first suggested in 1992 and improved in 1997 by diminishing the measurement time and adapting it for automation. it is here demonstrated that when the mass attenuation coefficient mw and the density dw are replaced by ms and ds (where the subscripts w and s stand for water and solution) in the approximate equations used to estimate the concentration of suspended particles, they become exact. the demonstration is based by treating the dispersant and water solution as one single medium, instead of treating them as two media. in this way, six variables are reduced to only three. physical considerations suggest that the precision in this analysis could be improved if other types of solutions and of photon energies would be used, so that the attenuation by the particles would differ more significantly from the attenuation by the solution.

Abstract Michel Onfray and André Comte-Sponville are the most famous representatives of philosophical contemporary French atheism, which is a continuation of a tradition begun in the 18th Century of irreligious denying of the monotheistic notion of God. Although sharing many ideas, like naturalism and, obviously, the rejection of the monotheistic conception of God, their proposals show important distinctions. Onfray blames on religion most of evils faced by humanity, refusing to make any concession to monotheism, and proposing a libertarian, hedonistic, materialistic philosophy. Comte-Sponville sees positive aspects in religion regarding the keeping of social unity, and puts forward an atheistic spirituality. The article makes a brief presentation of both theses and formulates criticisms to each of them. Onfray is much more concerned with convincing of a political proposal than with arguing in favour of his thesis philosophically, and Comte-Sponville does not seem to notice the self-defeating consequences of naturalism, which also makes very problematic the very notion of morality. Keywords: Michel Onfray; Comte-Sponville; atheism; neoatheism; naturalism.
