Contextus , 2011,
Latado, Rodrigo Rocha;Bueno Filho, Julio Silvio Sousa;Pompeu Junior, Jorgino;Tulmann Neto, Augusto;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2004001000003
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the pollen grain viability of 'pêra' sweet orange mutant plants and to estimate its correlation with fruit characteristics. mutant plants were obtained from shoot treatment with gamma-rays and selected after three vegetative propagations. pollen grain viability was evaluated using carmine-acetic staining method. no difference was found between years for pollen grain viability and for number of seeds per fruit, indicating that these characters were not affected by the yearly environmental alterations. positive correlations were found between pollen grain viability and mean number of seeds per fruit, and with the total soluble solid content in juice. therefore, one of the reasons for the smaller number of seeds per fruit in these mutants is the low percentage of viable pollen grain.

Abstract: Nine new sulfonamides derived from carvacrol were prepared through a reaction between 4-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-5-methyl benzene sulfonyl chloride with various amines in excellent yields (76% - 92%). The sulfonamides were characterized using spectrometric and spectroscopic methods. Among these compounds, three derivatives showed excellent results in antibacterial activity against resistant S. aureus strains, with MIC values ranging from 3.9 to 62.50 ppm. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline (SULF-1) had the best performance for all tested strains of bacteria (MIC = 3.9 to 15.62 ppm). Furthermore, the sulfonamide derivative of 4-fluoro aniline (SULF-3), which also presented promising results, was found to have a synergistic effect when combined with tetracycline and partial synergistic effect when combined with ampicillin, exhibiting an FIC index between 0.50 and 0.75. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline had a synergistic effect in combination with erythromycin exhibiting an FIC index of 0.37. Carvacrol in association with the antibiotics tested did not have a synergistic effect.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982010000600027
Abstract: this study aimed to identify some performance parameters associated with the farrowing efficiency in sows. from a total of 636 births and 7,100 piglets born, data was collected for: parity (op), number of piglets born alive (nv), stillborns (nat), mummified (mum), total litter size (tn), use of vaginal palpation and oxytocin injection, time of birth for each piglet, and beginning and end of the parturition. the average interval among piglets birth was 16.7 min and the average duration of parturition was 247 min. the average duration of parturition increased regarded to the number of born piglets, the use of oxytocin and with the ocurence of vaginal palpation. the total number of births in the long parturitions (> 211 min), with 13.1 piglets was higher than in the short parturitions (< 210 min), with 11.7 piglets, therefore, the higher the number of total piglets born, the longer is the duration of parturition. litter size was higher for sows of the second parity (12.8) than for sows of first parity (11.9). the duration of parturition is affected by the number of piglets born, which is higher in second parity than first parity females and it is associated to the higher occurence of stillbirths and mummified piglets.

International braz j urol , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-55382012000400014
Abstract: objective: to investigate the vegf expression and collagen deposition using a latex biomembrane as bladder replacement in rabbits. materials and methods: after partial cystectomy, a patch of a non-vulcanized latex biomembrane (2 x 2 cm) was sewn to the bladder of rabbits with 5/0 monofilament polydioxanone sulfate sutures in a watertight manner. groups of 5 animals were killed at 15, 45 and 90 days after surgery and the bladder was removed. sections of 5μm were cut and stained with picrosirius-red in order to estimate the amount of extracellular matrix in the graft. to confirm the presence of vegf in tissues, protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. results: no death, urinary leakage or graft extrusion occurred in any group. all bladders showed a spherical shape. a progressive reduction in the amount of collagen occurred in the graft area and was negatively and linearly correlated with time (p < 0.001). vegf expression was higher in grafted areas when compared to controls at 15 and 45 days after surgery and decreased with time (p < 0.001). conclusion: the latex biomembrane as a matrix for partial bladder replacement in rabbits promotes temporary collagen deposition and stimulates the angiogenic process.
Lovastatin protects mithochondrial and renal function in kidney ischemia-reperfusion in rats
Tucci Junior, Silvio;Molina, Carlos Augusto Fernandes;Cassini, Marcelo Ferreira;Leal, Daniel Mendes;Schineider, Cássio Antonio Botene;Martins, Antonio Carlos Pereira;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502012000700008
Abstract: purpose: to investigate the effect of lovastatin on renal ischemia followed by reperfusion. methods: thirty one wistar rats submitted to left renal ischemia for 60 minutes followed by contralateral nephrectomy were divided into two groups: a (n =17, control, no treatment), and b (n=14, lovastatin 15 mg/kg/day p.o. ten days before ischemia). the animals were sacrificed at the end of ischemia, after 24 hours and at seven days after reperfusion. survival, serum urea and creatinine levels and renal mitochondrial function were evaluated. results: mortality was 29.4% in group a and 0.7% in group b. urea and creatinine levels were increased in both groups, but the values were significantly lower in group b. mitochondrial function showed decoupling in 83.4% of group a, as opposed to 38.4/% of group b. conclusions: the result shows a protective action of renal function by lovastatin administered before ischemia/reperfusion. since most of the mitochondrial fraction presented membranes with the ability to maintain atp production in group b, stabilization of the mitochondrial membrane should be considered as part of the protective action of lovastatin on renal function in ischemia/reperfusion.

Abstract: A determinant factor in the pathology of canine angiostrongylosis seems to be related to the location of the parasite in the definitive host. Their presence inside the arteries and its branches, promoting mechanical and metabolic action on the wall of the vessels, may alter its homeostasis. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a procedure that retrieves cells and other elements from de lungs for evaluation, and helps in the diagnosis of many pulmonary diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate CD4+/CD8+ lymphocyte profile during the infection by Angiostrongylus vasorum, using cells retrieved using BAL. The identification of subpopulations of T lymphocytes by evaluating the co-expression of CD4 and CD8 receptor proteins has shown that despite the increase in both populations, there was a predominance of CD4+ T-cells, instead of CD8+ T-cells. These increases of CD4+ T-cells associated with the increase of the ratio between CD4+/CD8+ suggest polarization of a Th2 response. However, the immune cells, signaling factors, and cytokines that mediate such immunity and how and where they act within the body remain largely undefined during angiostrongylosis.

Abstract: antimony preparations are the drugs of choice for the treatment of leishmaniasis over 90 years, a disease that currently affects 12 million people worldwide. its introduction was based on 19th century concepts of therapeutic effects of metal salts as arsenicals and other metals, most of them abandoned due to toxic effects or better drugs. in the last three decades, there was a great improvement in the knowledge of cell biology and immunology of those infections, but chemotherapy has not been improved in the same strength. the structure and mechanism of action of the two pentavalent antimonial drugs of choice, meglumine antimoniate and sodium stibogluconate, are not well known and the contamination of those pharmaceutical by toxic contaminants have been verified.
Letra, melodia, arranjo: componentes em tens?o em O morro n?o tem vez de Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinícius de Moraes
Merhy, Silvio Augusto;
Per Musi , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-75992010000200008
Abstract: records have made easier to think over a musical issue as a document, not exclusively as an aesthetic object. through song recordings it is possible to decompose, recompose, analyze, extract components, etc., and most of all consider them as belonging to a vast social net. putting together lyrics, melody and arrangement poses the question of classifying genres. musical arrangements, as a kind of song frame, can break apart the former sense of the combination lyrics/melody. some recordings of o morro n?o tem vez by tom jobim and vinicius de moraes disclose contradictions and tensions in what is called bossa nova and make it a permanent question.
