Perineal massage

NURE Investigación , 2013,
Abstract: Most women want to give birth without perineal tears, cuts or sutures, because these often cause back pain and discomfort and may have a negative impact on sexual functioning. It is suggested that perineal massage during the last month of pregnancy as a possible way of allowing the perineal tissue to expand more easily during birth. Perineal massage, which makes the woman or her partner (for only one or two times a week from 35 weeks) reduces the likelihood of perineal trauma (mainly episiotomies) and perineal pain during and after birth. The FAME (Federation of Associations for Midwives in Spain) recognizes that perineal massage during pregnancy reduces perineal trauma (episiotomy and tears) during childbirth.

Abstract: This paper presents the biosorption of chromium onto red seaweed (Polysiphonia nigrescens). Batch mode experiments were performed to determine experimental parameters affecting sorption process such as pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and biomass dosage. The Cr(III) sorption was dependent on pH and adsorbent dosage. The adsorption kinetic data could be fitted with a pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data with a Langmuir model. The maximum sorption capacity was of 16.11 mg/g at pH 4 and 10 g/L of biomass dosage. 0.1 M H2SO4 showed good desorption efficiency (>80%). Spectroscopy analysis showed that Cr(III) sorption on seaweed was mainly through the ion-exchange mechanism. This report indicates that P. nigrescens is an effective and economical sorbent for removal of Cr(III) from wastewaters.

Abstract: Introduction: Papular urticaria caused by the bites of fleas traditionally has been defined as a chronic allergic disease. However, currently no clear relationship has been described between this pathology and common allergic diseases. Objective: The expression of IL-10, IL-4 and IFN-γ as markers of effector T cell responses was examined in skin lesions of patients with papular urticaria by flea bite. Materials and methods: Fourteen skin lesion biopsies were sampled from children with a clinical diagnosis of papular urticaria by flea bite and were compared with 5 healthy skin biopsies of children with no history of the disease. All children were under 12 years old. RNA was extracted with trizol and the expression levels of cytokines were analyzed by real time PCR technique. Results: A wide range in the expression levels of IFN-γ and IL-10 was noted as well as constant low values of IL-4. Three distinct profiles were observed, but which did not correspond to a recognizable pattern among the patients. The samples obtained from healthy tissues showed no expression of any of the cytokines. Conclusions: This is the first characterization of cytokines that mediate the immune response at the site of the skin lesion in children with papular urticaria by flea bite. The data indicated that the local response was mixed and that a single phenotype is not predominant among the patients. Conclusione

Abstract: Henequen (Agave fourcroydes Lem.) is a high value plant species both for agricultural and ecological uses. The species is very well known worldwide by the quality of its fiber that is widely used for industrial purposes. This species is propagated at a large scale by asexual methods but current propagation technologies are not satisfying the grower’s demands. A. fourcroydes has been cultivated n vitro but it has shown some recalcitrant behaviour during the multiplication and rooting stages. The combination of 6-benzylamynopurine (BAP) (0.75 mg L-1) and indolebutyric acid (IBA) (1.0 mg L-1) instead of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) significantly improved explant survival and shooting during the establishment of n vitro young shoots. Combining thidiazuron (TDZ) (0.5 or 0.75 mg L-1) with BAP (1.0 mg L-1) and IBA (1.0 mg L-1) in the basal medium increased the multiplication rate of henequen and significantly speeded out bud dormancy breaking. To improve rooting of the micropropagated shoots, the addition of IBA and naphthylacetic acid (NAA) was tested. The best rooting efficiency was obtained when the basal medium was supplemented with 0.5 or 0.75 mg L-1 of NAA, giving 100% of rooted explants and an average of 9.40 and 11.55 roots per explants, respectively. Over 94% of micropropagated plants survived the ex vitro weaning step and no morphological disorders were observed in any of the plants. Modification of plant growth regulators composition in the medium was a key factor to improve the efficiency of the micropropagation technology of henequen. Abstract: the isolation of aerobic marine bacteria able to degrade hydrocarbons represents a promising alternative for the decontamination of oceanic and coastal environments. in the present work, twelve water and sediment samples from the felton coastline in the province of holguín were collected and screened with bushnell-haas medium supplemented with light crude oil or with seawater supplemented with yeast extract and crude oil as a carbon source, obtaining twenty seven and six bacterial isolates respectively that were able to grow in these media. the obtained isolates were then subjected to selection in bushnell-haas medium supplemented with a heavy crude oil, selecting three strains able to degrade this hydrocarbon mixture within a period of seven days. pure cultures of these strains were further used in crude oil biodegradability assays. total petroleum hydrocarbon (tph) degradation was evaluated through sara analysis, employing gas chromatography with an fid detector and infrared spectroscopy to analyze the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions, respectively. all three stains removed more than 60% of the tph and one of them showed the best degradation potential with figures above 65% for the entire hydrocarbon fraction, except resins. two of the strains were also able to decrease c17:pr and c18:ph ratios to less than 50% in comparison to the abiotic control. two of these strains were phenotypically identified as sp., and the remaining one as sp. the degradation potential exhibited by these new isolates warrants further studies on their possible application to decontaminate coastal environments affected by oil spills.

When the dialyser is suitably primed, the capillaries expand correctly and the membrane is well impregnated with the solution. In order to facilitate the priming of the dialyser, a device was placed next to the dialyser which constantly produces a vibration inside it to favour the correct elimination of microbubbles and uniform distribution of the heparin. This study included 8 patients with higher than normal heparin requirements and whose dialysers at the end of the session showed coagulated capillaries. Over thirteen sessions, the device was applied reducing the heparin dose on the third session if the dialyser was still clean at the end of that session. A photographic record was kept of the state of the dialyser at the end of the session. The mean initial dose of heparin was 3500 ± 534.522 i.u. and at the end of the study it was 2562.50±728.869 i.u., the haemolysis, Kt/V and haemoglobin indices and other analytical parameters did not show any differences. The photographic record showed clean dialysers once the study was complete. With this method we have managed to keep the circuit clean with lower doses of heparin and with no alteration of the analytical parameters.

Abstract: Genome-enhanced genotypic evaluations are becoming popular in several livestock species. For this purpose, the combination of the pedigree-based relationship matrix with a genomic similarities matrix between individuals is a common approach. However, the weight placed on each matrix has been so far established with ad hoc procedures, without formal estimation thereof. In addition, when using marker- and pedigree-based relationship matrices together, the resulting combined relationship matrix needs to be adjusted to the same scale in reference to the base population. This study proposes a semi-parametric Bayesian method for combining marker- and pedigree-based information on genome-enabled predictions. A kernel matrix from a reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces regression model was used to combine genomic and genealogical information in a semi-parametric scenario, avoiding inversion and adjustment complications. In addition, the weights on marker- versus pedigree-based information were inferred from a Bayesian model with Markov chain Monte Carlo. The proposed method was assessed involving a large number of SNPs and a large reference population. Five phenotypes, including production and type traits of dairy cattle were evaluated. The reliability of the genome-based predictions was assessed using the correlation, regression coefficient and mean squared error between the predicted and observed values. The results indicated that when a larger weight was given to the pedigree-based relationship matrix the correlation coefficient was lower than in situations where more weight was given to genomic information. Importantly, the posterior means of the inferred weight were near the maximum of 1. The behavior of the regression coefficient and the mean squared error was similar to the performance of the correlation, that is, more weight to the genomic information provided a regression coefficient closer to one and a smaller mean squared error. Our results also indicated a greater accuracy of genomic predictions when using a large reference population.
