Production of MgO-X Refractory Material with Cellular Matrix by Colloidal Processing  [PDF]

Abstract: The production in the siderurgy and foundry industry has changed considerably in the past years. Despite the new technologies and process, the use of magnesia carbon refractory remains constant. Namely the magnesia carbon refractory is widely used due low-priced cost, high refractivity, excellent corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion, high slag penetration resistance and low wettability. The main disadvantages of use magnesia carbon refractories are the high carbon oxidation susceptibility and the formation CO and CO2 gases. As a result, tonne of CO and CO2 are expelled to the atmosphere. The use of open cell carbon-foam magnesia composite for refractory application can offer a substitute for the traditional refractory material since the high carbon content can be minored and the low mechanical strength and poor oxidation resistance of these materials can be improved.

Abstract: the environmental education is aimed at seeking new forms of relationship between human beings and nature. although based on an ethical position, it carries the difficulties imposed by a plaster model of education, based on the logic of technical-scientific rationality that permeates society. in an attempt to overcome such condition we propose the aesthetic environmental education as a way of human beings to relate with the world they inhabit while posing the challenge to lead the reunion with their sensitive, emotional and poetic dimensions. having this field as a basis, we, theoretically, reflect on the inclusion of an artistic proposal as a means of achieving the necessary goals for the environmental education. in the field of art, we turn to the theater of the oppressed, which has the goal of theater democratization, as an organic activity of human beings. we have identified in it approximations to the principles and objectives sought by the aesthetic environmental education.
Cerebral systems in the pathogenesis of endogenous psychoses

Abstract: mental process imply a harmonious functioning of psychic systems, assembled into larger units, psychic spheres (table 1). their neurophysiological representatives are brain systems of areas and pathways (figs 1-4). under functional and/or organic disturbances these systems originate the leading mental symptoms (table 2) characterizing the diverse endogenous psychoses: hence, the latter's distinctive patterns. accordingly, understanding and classification of psychoses should rest on the pathogenic dynamisms, not on clinical description. this is why kleist's and leonhard's conceptions of the endogenous psychoses surpass any other to exist. kleist stands among the founders of psychiatry, by describing the "degeneration psychoses" and many single psychoses, as well as redefining, isolating and clarifying the progressive ones, later on renamed as schizophrenias (table 3). such pathogenic criterion may also be useul to define mental conditions other than psychoses, as hysteria, neuroses and psychopathic inferiority (tables 4 and 5). one should consider here, besides the psychic systems and spheres involved, the way they were caught and the corresponding developmental phase. in kleist's "degeneration psychoses"- cyclic or episodic (table 6) the systems and spheres are disturbed by functional transient processes due to latent dispositions, while his and leonhard's schizophrenias (table 7) show a rather progressive, deteriorating course. the nature of the disorder is itself genetically determined, as is either its confinement to one sphere or its spreading out. the spread out pattern, while exceptional in schizophrenia, represents a rule for the "degeneration psychoses", in discussant's mind. both groups may have symptoms alike by involvement of the same sphere (table 8), but proper diagnosis is reached by taking pathogenesis into consideration.

Abstract: the article highlights the importance of a reflection about the impacts and possibilities that the concepts related to virtual organisations may bring to the interorganisational coordination in the governmental planning. such interorganisational coordination may contribute to improve the effectiveness of the governmental action, by means of a cooperative informational environment. aspects like, cooperative information management, organisational culture, power and control, boundaries and organizational structures, as well as trust must be object of attention, in case one wants to evolve towards applying the concept of virtual organizations to the public sector.
Pronunciation instruction and syllabic-pattern discrimination

Abstract: the present research is an investigation of the role played by pronunciation instruction in the discrimination of english cvc and cvcv syllabic patterns in word-final position. the participants of this study were two groups of brazilian learners (beginners): the control group (10 students), and the experimental group (12 students). both groups were given a discrimination pretest and posttest, between which the experimental group received instruction based on a pronunciation manual with activities focused on the english syllable and word-final consonants, whereas the control group received no such instruction. the pre and posttests consisted of an oddity discrimination test, in which the participants had to discriminate between the cvc and cvcv syllabic patterns. the posttest results showed somewhat greater improvement for the experimental group than for the control group, but this difference was not statistically significant.

Abstract: this article is the result of research carried out in the two main legislative houses of the state of mato grosso: the legislature (assembléia legislativa (almt)) - and the municipal chamber of cuiabá (camara municipal de cuiabá (cmc)). altogether, 20 years were covered in the almt and 22 in the cmc, totaling five legislative periods in each of the houses, as of 1983. it reflects on the profile of these parliaments through political party composition, professional background and the experiences of collective organizations, among others, identifying the enormous ability to perpetuate power on the part of members of the parliament, whether through the electoral process or through the management of state enterprises. making particular use of the works of claus offe and max weber, we confront both offe's premises, according to which entrepreneurs use power structures to promote valorization of capital, and weber's. in the latter's view, those with a political vocation are those that live for politics and therefore, have the material resources that guarantee their independence, which is different from those who live from politics, in other words, those who depend upon politics for their survival. analysis of research data enable us to identify strong elements that would corroborate the first premise, but cast doubt on the second. in consolidating the means to conserve institutional arrangements, whether by re-election, campaign for a new elected office or through exercising administrative positions within government organs, these members of parliament are putting together their legislative tools for the preservation and widening of their private and class interests, just as claus offe has identified. thus, as they come to live for politics, they in turn also begin to live from politics.
PL2 production of english word-final consonants: the role of orthography and learner profile variables

Abstract: the present study investigates some factors affecting the acquisition of second language (l2) phonology by learners with considerable exposure to the target language in an l2 context. more specifically, the purpose of the study is two-fold: (a) to investigate the extent to which participants resort to phonological processes resulting from the transfer of l1 sound-spelling correspondence into the l2 when pronouncing english word-final consonants; and (b) to examine the relationship between rate of transfer and learner profile factors, namely proficiency level, length of residence in the l2 country, age of arrival in the l2 country, education, chronological age, use of english with native speakers, attendance in efl courses, and formal education. the investigation involved 31 brazilian speakers living in the united states with diverse profiles. data were collected using a questionnaire to elicit the participants' profiles, a sentence-reading test (pronunciation measure), and an oral picture-description test (l2 proficiency measure). the results indicate that even in an l2 context, the transfer of l1 sound-spelling correspondence to the production of l2 word-final consonants is frequent. the findings also reveal that extensive exposure to rich l2 input leads to the development of proficiency and improves production of l2 word-final consonants.
Perception and production of English initial /s/ clusters by Brazilian learners

Abstract: The present study investigated the relationship between perception and production in the acquisition of word-initial /s/ clusters in the interlanguage of Brazilians learning English as a foreign language. In addition to the interface between perception and production, other factors that might influence both mental processes, e.g., faulty perception, L1 interference, or a combination of these factors, were taken into account. The results part ially support studies which propose that perception influences production. There was also support for the power of L1 interference over Markedness and Universal Canonical Syllable Structure. Epenthesis was the strategy of syllable simplification present in all cluster types. Some subjects, though, resorted to a short epenthetic vowel (/I/), thus indicating that they might be developing a separate category for initial /s/ clusters. No presente estudo foi investigada a rela o percep o-produ o na aquisi o de encontros consonantais iniciados em /s/, em início de palavra, na interlíngua de brasileiros aprendendo inglês como língua estrangeira. Além da interface percep o-produ o, foram analisados outros fatores que podem vir a influenciar os dois processos, e.g., percep o deficiente, interferência da língua materna ou uma combina o desses e outros fatores. Os resultados validam parcialmente outros estudos que prop em a influência da percep o sobre a produ o. Constatou-se também a supremacia da influência da língua materna em detrimento de fatores como Marca o e Estrutura Silábica Can nica Universal. A estratégia de simpl ifica o silábica usada por todos os sujeitos foi a inser o de uma vogal diante de todos os tipos de encontros consonantais testados. Houve uma certa varia o na qualidade da vogal proclítica (/i/ e /I/), sugerindo que os sujeitos que util izaram a vogal curta podem estar desenvolvendo uma categoria distinta para o padr o silábico testado.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce a discussion about the possibility of using image as a praxis, which is based on a pictorial pedagogical purpose. The educational video class, as being the means of education and having as its main point the use of the movies, puts in evidence the triad image teacher and learner within a common context that uses this means as a way of a virtual teaching-learning proposition, through an alternative contemporary language.
