Abstract: the aim of this study was to measure the optical density of four packable composite resins with widths of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm, by means of digora? (direct) and dentscan dentview? (indirect) digital imaging systems, in order to compare both methods. twenty acrylic plates, with the proposed thicknesses, were used, each one containing a sample of each resin. each acrylic plate was radiographed three times, under a standardized technique. for the digora? system, an optical plate was used under each resin sample, and, for the dentscan dentview? system, occlusal films were employed, totalizing 60 exposures for each system. optical plates and films were scanned and three consecutive optical readouts were carried out, totalizing 1,440 readouts. the results were submitted to statistical analysis and revealed that the average optical density of the four resins always increased as thickness increased. regarding the comparisons between the composite resins, in both analysis the resin with the greater optical density was surefil? followed by prodigy? condensable, alert? and solitaire?. the correlations between the results of digora? and dentscan dentview? were significant for the different thicknesses and materials. the observed tendency is that as the values obtained with the digora? system increase, so do the values obtained with dentscan dentview?. while thickness increased, the values of optical density in both digora? and dentscan dentview? tended to approach each other. the digora? system presented smaller amplitude between the results obtained in adjacent thicknesses.

The correlations between the results of Digora and DentScan DentView were significant for the different thicknesses and materials. The observed tendency is that as the values obtained with the Digora system increase, so do the values obtained with DentScan DentView . While thickness increased, the values of optical density in both Digora and DentScan DentView tended to approach each other. The Digora system presented smaller amplitude between the results obtained in adjacent thicknesses.

Abstract: the use of an appropriate rootstock depends on the knowledge of its affinity with the cultivar scion as well as its influence on liveliness and productiveness. the purpose of this research was to evaluate the vegetative and -productive development, and fruit quality of the cv. study was to evaluate the vegetative growth, fruit production and quality of cv. 'maciel' grafted on different peach rootstocks. the cultivars used as rootstocks were seeds from industry, 'capdeboscq', 'aldrighi', 'tsukuba 1', 'a clone of okinawa', 'okinawa clone 12', and 'rubira' 'nemaguard' and as canopy it was used cv 'maciel'. it was measured trunk diameter, canopy volume, amount of chlorophyll, pruning intensity, productivity, mass, and color of pulp fruit firmness, tss, ta and tss/ta ratio. the experimental design was randomized blocks with eight levels for the factor rootstock, each consisting of three replications with five plants per replicate. it was observed in the last assessment in 2008, the difference in diameter of the trunk between the rootstocks, especially 'industria' (47.2mm) and 'tsukuba' (46.8mm). in the canopy volume the highlight among the rootstocks occurred with 'industria' (1,60m3) and 'nemaguard' (1,63m3). the amount of chlorophyll was similar with 'nemaguard', 'tsukuba 1', 'okinawa clone 1', 'rubira' and 'indústria'. fruit weight was greater with 'rubira' (143g) and 'tsukuba' (135g) in 2007 and in 2008 and in 2008 most 'okinawa clone 12' (73g), 'capdeboscq' (83g), 'aldrighi' (81g) and 'nemaguard' (82g). there was variation in productivity in production cycles, the highlight occurred in 2007 with 'tsukuba 1' (0.32ton ha-1) and in 2008 with 'industry' (8.6tons ha-1). with the 'okinawa clone 12' it was observed higher firmness (12.1 and 11.8 pounds in 2007 and 2008, respectively). highest tss / att stood out with 'tsukuba 1' (18.3). based on the differential responses it was concluded that the vegetative growth and fruit quality of cv. 'maciel' are affected by the root

Abstract: fruticulture is present in all brazilian states, and as economic activity, involves around five million people, directly and indirectly. brazil is the third largest fruit producer, with output of around 40 million tons a year, but has only 2% of global trade industry, which demonstrates the high domestic consumption. the brazilian fruit growing area is approximately 1.9 million hectares of which 1,034,708 hectares of tropical fruits, 928,552 ha of subtropical fruits and 135,857 ha of temperate species. among the fruits of temperate climate, are table and wine grapes (81,677 ha), apples (39,081 ha), peaches, plums and nectarines (19,102 ha), persimmons (8,740 ha), strawberries, blackberries, raspberries , blueberries (3,560 ha), figs (3,072 ha), pears (1,404 ha) and quinces (211 ha). even with a smaller area than the species of tropical and subtropical climate, the temperate fruits have a social importance, highlighted in several regions of southern brazil, which corresponds to the states of rio grande do sul, santa catarina, parana, of southeastern brazil, sao paulo and minas gerais, and in the s?o francisco valley region, in northeasten brazil, either as fresh crops, agribusiness and/or agrotourism. brazilian exports of fruits in recent years have been very positive, both in volume and in value. in 1998 brazil exported 294,222 tons of fruits, whereas in 2008 exported 887,978 tons, representing a 201.8% increase in export volume. the main fruits that contributed to this significant increase were melon, mango, banana, apple and grape, with an increase in export volume between 1998 and 2008 of 226, 242, 91, 948 and 1766% respectively. the production of quality fruits in the temperate regions of southeastern brazil needs genetic and breeding programs and studies on agricultural management, as well as on plant physiology to adapt them to the mild winter and to the range of temperatures, very frequent in major brazilian regions. the long summers and precipitation excess
