Archivos argentinos de pediatr?-a , 2008,
Abstract: superior mesenteric artery syndrome is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction. the syndrome results from compression of the third portion of duodenum as it crosses underneath the superior mesenteric artery, related to conditions that reduce the aortomesenteric angle (acute weight loss) or after scoliosis surgery. patients may present symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction, such as upper abdominal distension and epigastric tenderness, usually relieved by posture changing. diagnose must be complemented with an upper gastrointestinal barium-contrast radiography. conservative treatment is usually effective with early diagnosis. surgery is needed when conservative measures are ineffective. we present the case of a 18 year-old patient with wilkietm s syndrome secondary to scoliosis surgery. the patient presented symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction, and diagnosis was confirmed with upper gastrointestinal barium-contrast radiography. the patient started conservative treatment with proper positioning after eating and nutritional support to provide optimal calories supply.

Archivos argentinos de pediatr?-a , 2008,
Abstract: a nasal septal abscess (na) is defined as a collection of pus between the cartilage or bony septum and its normally applied mucoperichondrium or mucoperiostium. it is an uncommon disease wich should be suspected in a patient with acute onset of nasal obstruction and recent history of nasal trauma, periodontal infection or an inflammatory process of the rhinosinusal region. we report a case of an 8-year-old boy with bilateral na caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus(mr-co) in order to emphasize the importance of prompt diagnosis and adequate treatment to prevent the potentially dangerous spread of infection and the development of severe functional and cosmetic sequelae.
Abdomen agudo como manifestación inicial de meningococemia

Archivos argentinos de pediatr?-a , 2008,
Abstract: abdominal pain as an initial symptom of meningococcemia is an infrequent entity, rarely described in literature. we present a case of a 4 year-old, male, previously healthy child with a 24 hour history of fever and abdominal pain. he is admitted in a surgical unit with a diagnosis of acute abdomen for surgical resolution. the clinical course turns unfavorably, and patient presents signs of severe sepsis. urgent laparotomy is performed, observing little brownish fluid and mesenteric adenitis. he then exhibits palpable purpuric rapidly progressive lesions in lower extremities, progressing to septic shock. later, neisseria meningitidis serogroup b is isolated from blood cultures. the aim of this article is drawing attention to a nontypical form of manifestation of meningococcemia, as a delayed diagnosis and treatment has an impact on morbidity and mortality among the pediatric population.
Dal castrum altomedievale al restauro settecentesco: storia e archeologia del castello di Sorrivoli (Roncofreddo - FC)
Fiorini, Andrea
Arqueología de la Arquitectura , 2011,
Abstract: The methods and tools used to determine the history of construction and building techniques of the castle of Sorrivoli (Roncofreddo - FC) are here described. This is a research project carried out within a study coordinated by the teaching of Medieval Archaeology (University of Bologna), which has the purpose of conducting a census of all the medieval castles in Romagna. There is certain news from the tenth century concerning the castle to be studied. However, the investigations have shown that the standing preserved structures must be dated from the fourteenth century onwards. The system of photogrammetric survey of the walls and the technique of threedimensional modelling of the structures are here described. An extended part of this paper is also devoted to results of stratigraphic, typological, geological, metrological and comparative mensio-cronological analysis. No disponible
Three-dimensional recording in the archaeological excavation at the Bronze Age settlement of Mursia, Pantelleria. LA DOCUMENTAZIONE TRIDIMENSIONALE DELLO SCAVO ARCHEOLOGICO NELL’ABITATO DELL’ETà DEL BRONZO DI MURSIA, PANTELLERIA (TP)
Andrea Fiorini
IpoTESI di Preistoria , 2010,
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe methods of documentation and detection techniques used on the archaeological site of Mursia (Pantelleria, TP) in order to build three-dimensional models of a hut and a stone mortar. The software measures three-dimensional coordinates of a finite set of points on the object using two photographs taken from different positions (stereo pairs). In particular, we explore some technical aspects of data processing like quickness, measurement accuracy, information content of record and equipments cost.
Nonsingular Promises from Born-Infeld Gravity
Franco Fiorini
Physics , 2013,
Abstract: Born-Infeld determinantal gravity formulated in Weitzenbock spacetime is discussed in the context of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies. It is shown how the standard model big bang singularity is absent in certain spatially flat FRW spacetimes, where the high energy regime is characterized by a de Sitter inflationary stage of geometrical character, i.e., without the presence of the inflaton field. This taming of the initial singularity is also achieved for some spatially curved FRW manifolds where the singularity is replaced by a de Sitter stage or a big bounce of the scale factor depending on certain combinations of free parameters appearing in the action. Unlike other Born-Infeld-like theories in vogue, the one here presented is also capable of deforming vacuum general relativistic solutions.
Top-Quark Physics Results From LHC
Luca Fiorini
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: The top-quark is a fundamental element of the physics program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We review the current status of the top-quark measurements performed by ATLAS and CMS experiments in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV by presenting the recent results of the top-quark production rates, top mass measurements and additional top quark properties. We will also describe the recent searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in the top-quark sector.
Secretion of Epstein-Barr Virus-encoded BARF1 oncoprotein from latently infected B cells

Virology Journal , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1743-422x-5-70
Abstract: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is tightly associated with divers human cancers, in particular nasopharyngeal and gastric carcinomas, lymphoma induced in Aids patient, Hodgkin's lymphoma and endemic Burkitt's lymphoma [1]. EBV immortalises primary simian and human B-lymphocytes [1,2] as well as epithelial cells in vitro [3,4]. EBV infection is latent in B cells and classified in three types: Type I, Type II and Type III. Type I is common to lymphomas and express very limited viral protein, mainly EBNA1, EBERs and BARF0. Type II express EBNA1, LMP1, EBERS, BARF0 and LMP2. Type III express several viral proteins like EBV-encoded nuclear antigens (EBNA1, EBNA2, EBNA3A, 3B and 3C), LMP1, LMP2A, LMP2B, BARF0 and EBERs [5]. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma belongs to Type II. Primary epithelial cells immortalized in vitro by EBV expressed EBNA1, EBERs, LMP2A and BARF1[3,4,6], thus belong to type II infection except for the absence of LMP1 expression.Among about 90 genes encoded by EBV genome, two oncogenes, LMP1 and BARF1, are known to induce a malignant transformation in established rodent fibroblasts [7,8]. BARF1 was considered so far as an early gene. However among the viral lytic proteins, only BARF1 was expressed consistently and at high levels in NPC [9-11] and also in EBV-associated GC carcinoma as well as in EBV-immortalized epithelial cells in vitro [3,6,12]. In these cells, the expression of LMP1 and lytic genes was negative. BARF1 expression was also detected in B lymphoma frequent in Malawi [13] and in nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma [14]. Its expression is therefore not limited to epithelial cells, but also in B cells.BARF1 has a malignant transforming activity in rodent fibroblasts and in human EBV-negative B cells [8,15]. Its transforming and Bcl2 activating domain was demonstrated between 21st to 56th amino acid sequences by deletion mutants [15]. BARF1 has also immortalizing activity on primary primate epithelial cells [16]. Secreted BARF1 protein (called p29) purified from 29
Digital storytelling teaching robotics basics
Michele Scandola,Paolo Fiorini
Themes in Science and Technology Education , 2013,
Abstract: Digital Storytelling (DST) is a powerful tool for teaching complex concepts. DSTs are typically used in the humanities but several papers have shown that they are also a wonderful tool for the sciences because they are more involving, contextualized and can easily lead to deeper understanding. In the classical use of DST the story is thecontent, while the digital medium is the way of telling it. Our approach is slightly different: the story is not the content but a glue for the main contents, while the digital medium remains the way to tell the story. We propose the use of DST as a means to teach surgeons the basics of robotic surgery, by using a story that should be involving forthem, i.e. a surgical operation, within which we will illustrate specific concepts onrobotics in surgery.
