International Journal of Morphology , 2003, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022003000100004
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to describe the sites of insertion of the medial collateral and oblique ligaments of the cubital joint of the dog and to evaluate their morphometry, in addition to the bones (humerus, radius and ulna) involved in the joint. the study was conducted on 20 adult dogs (10 males and 10 females). the distal part of the medial collateral ligament is divided into cranial and caudal portions, with the caudal portion being long and narrow, with a mean length of 3.30 ± 0.36 cm and a mean width of 0.26 ± 0.06 cm. this portion penetrates the interosseous space and attaches to the proximal caudolateral surface of the radius. the oblique ligament is capsular, with a mean length of 2.94 ± 0.30 cm and a mean width of 0.28 ± 0.08 cm and caudally is also divided into cranial and caudal portions, with the former attaching to the proximal medial border of the radius, bypassing the tendons of insertion of the brachial muscle and biceps brachii muscle. the cranial portion of the medial collateral ligament and the caudal portion of the oblique ligament fuse together, representing a region that acts as a reinforcement for adjacent ligament structures.

Abstract: the literature reports that ligaments consist of connective tissue, composed by water, type i and iii collagen, several proteoglycans, some elastin and other substances. ligaments tested in vitro with longitudinal and unidirectional tension exhibit non-linear mechanical behavior; the collagen fibers are stretched little by little, losing their undulating pattern, until reaching the maximum limit of traction and failure begins. the aim of the present study was to assess the presence of elastin in the medial collateral ligament of the elbow in adult dogs to determine whether the stretching of this ligament is due to the presence of elastic fibers, the elastic property of the collagen or the combination of both. four joints were used from males and females in equal proportion, taking the medial collateral ligaments for the histological examination. to detect the presence of elastic fibers, sections were stained using the weigert method. however, light microscopy revealed no elastic fibers. it was concluded that the elasticity of the canine elbow medial collateral ligament is mainly due to the undulated pattern of the collagen fibers, considering the trace amount or inexistence of elastic fibers in this structure.

Acta Scientiarum : Biological Sciences , 2006,
Abstract: Twenty adult partridges Rhynchotus rufescens were used to study themorphology of oesophagus and crop. Materials to the morphologic study were collected and lengths of the oesophagus and of the crop were measured. For histological study, fragments of the oesophagus and of the crop were stained routinely with Masson’s trichrome stain. Total oesophagus was larger in females. In the entrance of the thorax, itsventral wall is enlarged broadly, forming the crop, which is larger in males. Oesophagus mucosa is constituted by stratified squamous epithelium, with mucous glands and lymphatic tissues. There are three layers of smooth muscle, involved in serosa. The histological structure of the crop is similar to the oesophagus. The mucous glands are reduced in size and the lymphatic tissues are dispersed in the connective tissue. There is a thin stratum of smooth muscle and other two wider layers of longitudinal and circular musculature. A característica histológica do papo é semelhante à do es fago.

Abstract: The effects of extracts from Azadirachta indica, A. Juss, and streptozotocin in extreme high dilutions in dinamized systems on proximal convoluted tubules of rats with diabetes mellitus induced bystreptozotocin were evaluated, because this nephron segment absorbs all the glucose from the glomerular filter. The morphometric results indicated significant differences among the treatments for the measured parameters in cell nucleus of the proximal convoluted tubules and in thickness of the tubule cells. The white control grouppresented higher mean values for the analyzed parameters than the other experimental groups.

Abstract: This experiment investigated the biometric parameters for the enteric tract of eight Southern Caracaras (Polyborus plancus, Miller 1777). The study was carried out on eight adult animals of both sexes (four males and four females) having different ages and weights. The animals were sacrificed and dissected, and their visceral tracts were placed on a horizontal plane surface. The lengths were measured and the weights were obtained on electronic precision scales. The statistical analysis utilized was Student’s t-test with a significance level p=0.05. The results showed that the Southern Caracara possessed a duodenum and an ileum longer than those of the chicken. It was concluded that the small intestine of the Southern Caracara is relatively extensive, mainly on account of the duodenum that is similar in length to that of the goose. This bird had a vestige of the cecum that it is different to that of the chicken.

International Journal of Poultry Science , 2011,
Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to analyse macroscopically the femur and determine the biochemical values at 8, 22 and 42 days of age, producing basic results that can help to understand the pathogeny of the locomotor problems and the broiler physiologic growth. A total of 60 Cobb male broilers were distributed in three age groups (8, 22 and 42 days of age) of 20 birds. All macroscopic measurements, except the cranial compact layer increased (p<0.05) over the course of the ages. The cranial compact layer presented the biggest measure at 22 days of age. The ash percentage increased (p<0.05) until 22 days of age, but at 42 days of age this values decreased. Calcium and phosphorus percentage in ash increased (p<0.05) until 22 days of age and evidenced constancy from 22 to 42 days of age. The biomechanical adaptation capacity of femur was evidenced by the increase of the macroscopic measures over the course of the ages and the different behavior of cranial compact layer at 22 days of age suggested an adaptation attempt of the immature bone to muscle mass increase. The ash and mineral percentage confirmed that the relative growth occurs with more intensity until 21 days of age. The calcium and phosphorus percentage evidenced the physiologic balance acting on the deposition of these minerals in femur.
