Abstract: The essential oils from Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon citratus, Rosmarinus officinalis, Peumus boldus and Foeniculum vulgare were extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized and quantified by GC-MS and GC-DIC. The oils induced hemolysis with all the doses evaluated (0.6 to 1.8 μL), and the diameters of the halos varied between 9 and 15 mm. Pre-incubation of P. boldus oil with Bothrops jararacussu venom resulted in potentiation of venom-induced hemolysis (30%) (proteases and phospholipases A2). The essential oil from M. piperita (0.6 μL) inhibited venom-induced hemolysis by 45%, whereas 0.6

Abstract: in this study, we analyzed the number of tb cases in an emergency room (er) and the susceptibility profile of mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. patients were selected from among those treated at the hospital das clínicas, in the city of belo horizonte, brazil. between 2002 and 2005, 240 tb patients were identified. of those, 117 patients (48.7%) were diagnosed in the er, 72 (61.5%) presenting positive sputum smear microscopy. drug susceptibility testing was carried out in 90 strains, of which 80 (89%) were sensitive, 9 (10%) were resistant, and 1 (1%) was multidrug resistant. the incidence of positive smear sputum microscopy and resistant tb strains was high, which calls for the immediate adoption of tb control measures in the er.

Abstract: the hepatic megakaryocytic cells of new zealand white rabbit in the intrauterine phase and in the immediate postnatal period were studied. statistical analysis of the data concerning the cytoplasm and nucleus of those cells, i.e., area, perimeter, maximum diameter, minimum diameter, volume and shape factor, presented significant differences (p<0.01) for f values concerning the life phases studied on15th, 22nd and 29th day of intrauterine life and 10th day of postnatal life, and for f values for animal within each phase. the tukey?s test showed that most of the parameters studied in the cytoplasm and nucleus of these megakaryocytic cells presented the lowest values on the 15th day of intrauterine life and the highest on the 22nd day of the same phase.

Abstract: introduction and objective: it has been suggested that type 2 diabetes is an inflammatory response manifestation. the main drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes are sulphonylureas and biguanides. the aim of this study was to demonstrate the modulatory effects of oral hypoglycemic drugs (chlorpropamide and metformin) on lymphocyte proliferation in vitro and ex vivo. methods: peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from human blood by gradient centrifugation. t-lymphocytes were stimulated by phytohemagglutinin (pha) and oral hypoglycemic drugs. results: in both in vitro and ex vivo experiments, there was a reduction in cell proliferation after treatment with oral hypoglycemic drugs. when both drugs were used in combination, a high level of cytotoxicity was observed, which made analysis of immunomodulatory effects unfeasible. discussion and conclusion: we demonstrated that diabetes itself may reduce cell proliferation significantly when stimulated by pha, which may indicate that diabetic patients have difficulties in promoting an efficient inflammatory response. moreover, the use of oral hypoglycemic drugs may aggravate this situation.

Abstract: overweight children are more prone to become overweight or obese adults. the most effective prevention is intervention in early childhood. we analyzed the association between early weight gain and overweight/obesity in 1,056 children under 11 years of age. data were collected on lifestyle, sanitation, socioeconomic status, birth weight, and breastfeeding. weight gain from birth until different age brackets (< 12, > 12 to 18, > 18 to 24, and > 24 to 60 months) was considered a continuous variable in z-scores. overweight was defined as body mass index (bmi) > +1 z-score, based on 2006 and 2007 world health organization (who) guidelines. poisson regression and linear regression were used in the multivariate statistical analysis. weight gain rate was associated with bmi, and overweight or obesity in the 5-11-year age bracket increased twofold for each unit increase in the weight gain standard deviation between 24 and 60 months of age (rr = 2.08; 95%ci: 1.87-2.32). for all early childhood age brackets, there was an association between rapid weight gain and subsequent overweight or obesity.

Abstract: the scope of this paper was to investigate the relationship between the nutritional status and the motor skills of the elderly registered in the family health program in the urban area of vitória de santo ant?o in the state of pernambuco, by means of a transversal epistemological descriptive-analytical field study. the participants of this survey were 235 elders, both male and female of 60-years-old and over registered in the family health program in the urban area of the city. the nutritional status was evaluated by the body mass index and the circumference of the calf. four motor tests were used to evaluate motor performance: time up&go, tinetti's index, functional reach and unipodal support. the associations were checked using spearman's correlation. the association of the nutritional status with the motor tests was statistically significant among males* or females**: (time up&go rho = 0.290* / 350**; functional reach rho = 0.232* / 352**; tinetti's index rho = 243* / 363** and unipodal support rho = 221* / 475**. the evaluation of the results revealed an association between nutritional status and functional capacity of the elders no matter what gender; with obesity being a limiting nutritional condition to adequate performance in the tests.
