CERNE , 2010,
Abstract: This study carried out an economic study and a risk simulation analysis in a palm heart of pejibaye (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.) cultivation project. Economic analysis was made by using the project evaluation methods: NPV, VAE, TIR and B/C; and the risk analysis was carried out through the Monte Carlo simulation technique by @RISK software. It was concluded that the project of palm heart of pejibaye cultivation is viable, with NPV of R$ 3.549,08; TIR of 19%; B/C greater than 1; the VAE of R$ 1.049,12. The risk analysis showed that the project presents a probability of 5% of getting a negative value for VPL. The variables which affected Net Present Value (NPV) according to the ranking of importance were: selling price, productivity and discount rate.

Sousa, Eliane Pinheiro de;Soares, Naisy Silva;Cordeiro, Sidney Araujo;Silva, Márcio Lopes da;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032011000100007
Abstract: this work aims to analyze the competitiveness of pejibaye palm heart production in espírito santo and s?o paulo states by applying the policy analysis matrix (pam). results show that the private and social profitabilities of pejibaye palm heart production and trading were positive in both states and are higher than those obtained by traditional crops, such as soybean, and by forest products, such as natural rubber. s?o paulo production was more profitable, being thus more competitive than espirito santo. however, these profitabilities could have been higher if producers were not exposed to negative effects of distorted public policies.

CERNE , 2009,
Abstract: This study analyzed the performance of forest promotion for the various regional of the State Forestry Institute of Minas Gerais (IEF/MG), during the 1989-2006 period and identified the benefits and the aspects to be improved in the Institute. The work was carried out based on data from the 13 regionals and 49 central offices of the IEF/MG. A total of 12 performance indicators, defined in meetings with technicians of the institute, were used. Data were evaluated through a tabular analysis, in graphics of arithmetic means, and a statistical model estimated by the Ordinary Minimum Square Method (MQO) used. The regional offices Mata and Rio Doce had the best results. Together they were responsible for 33% of the performance. The estimation of total incomes generated by the charcoal sales from the reforestation promotion by the IEF in 2006 was of US$ 314,067,218.69 and the estimated number of employments created by the reforestation in 2006 was of 8,046. It can also be concluded that it is necessary to increase the number of technicians involved with the forest fomentation activity.

CERNE , 2011,
Abstract: Given the increasingly frequent practice of forest stand establishment in rural properties, with a steadily rising number of properties becoming home to forest crops, there is a pressing need to improve property assessment methodologies, as more and more crops will be entering the market. The objective of this work is thus to perform a comparative study of three methods of forestland assessment: market value, cost value and productive value. To that end, an eucalyptus stand with a 7-year final cutting cycle was considered. Results showed a substantial difference among methods. Market value provided greater variation with the advancing of forest age, equaling productive value toward the end of the cycle. In year 0, market value provided the lowest values, while in year 7 cost value provided the lowest values. Further and more specific research and studies should be performed to obtain more specific methodologies to value this type of rural property and all of its peculiarities.

CERNE , 2012,
Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the competitiveness of Brazilian lumber on the international market in the period 2000 to 2007. The methodological tools used to compare the competitiveness of Brazil with its main competitors were the rates of Relative Position Marketing (PRM) and Revealed Comparative Advantage (VCR). The results point out to the fact that, although Brazil has proved competitive, it is necessary to use marketing strategies aimed at increasing the country’s competitiveness in this sector.
Necessidade de novos antibióticos
Brito, Monique Araujo de;Cordeiro, Benedito Carlos;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442012000400002
Abstract: antibiotics are a important class of drugs, without them there would be losses in life expectancy achieved over decades. but the power of antibiotics is threatened by bacterial resistance. there is an explosion of cases reported in the literature. in fact, the increase in bacterial resistance, particularly among potentially dangerous pathogens, has led to an increased need for new drugs and new classes of antibiotics for both infections acquired in hospitals and in the community. however, despite this need, only two new classes of antibiotics have been introduced in medicine since 1963, when nalidixic acid was approved: one in 2000 and one in 2003. the article discusses this issue.

Abstract: radioactive iodine is an effective and widely accepted therapy for graves disease (gd) and differentiated thyroid carcinoma (dtc), but there still are some controversies about the criteria for its use. to establish the present tendency for radioiodine indication, we have sent questionnaires for members of the brazilian society of endocrinology and latin american thyroid society, with 3 index cases: gd, toxic nodular goiter (tng) and dtc. for each case, questions were proposed about diagnostic procedures and therapy with some clinical variants, which could modify the therapeutic choice. from the almost 2000 questionnaires sent only 82 replies (3.4%) were analyzed. most of respondents defined themselves as general endocrinologists (85%), working in south and southeast regions of brazil (80%), with more than 20 years of professional activity and working mainly at university hospitals (40%). in case index 1 (gd), 95% of the respondents used arrays of t3, t4 and tsh for the diagnosis and 25% added trab and thyroid scan. antithyroid drugs (atd) were the first choice for 72%, followed by radioiodine and surgery (26% and 1.3% respectively). none of clinical variants such as severe exophtalmos, older age or goiter size modified the therapy. in case 2 (tng), radioiodine was the first therapy for 84% of professionals and the presence of compressive symptoms was the only variant that changed this tendency, when surgery was the main option. in case 3 (dtc), almost all indicated total thyroidectomy. radioiodine for thyroid remnants was proposed by 45% of respondents, independent of residual uptake, while the remaining did so depending of different values of uptake, giving 30 to 100mci. these data show that radioiodine use is increasing for hyperthyroidism, but still less than observed in other countries and that we do not have uniformity for treatment of dtc.

Research Journal of Agronomy , 2012, DOI: 10.3923/rjagr.2011.28.31
Abstract: Spondias cytherea Sonn. and S. purpurea L. (Anacardiaceae) are fruit species greatly appreciated in the tropics. However, they are difficult to cultivate because scions are hard to propagate. Many efforts have been made to develop techniques using auxins for propagating Spondias from cuttings. Researchers believe, however that the selection of better quality cuttings and their treatment with carbohydrates could be effective at lower expense. We tested cuttings of different lengths (100, 150 and 200 mm) treated with different concentrations (0, 15, 30 and 45 g L-1) of two different carbohydrate types; refined sugar as a cheaper treatment and pure sucrose as a control in the propagation of S. cytherea and S. purpurea. For S. cytherea cuttings of 150 mm were sufficient for a good rooting and emergence of new shoots. However, for S. purpurea better results were obtained with 200 mm cuttings. For both species there were tendencies for both better rooting and emergence of new shoots when the cuttings were treated with sucrose. However, since the use of refined sugar is far less expensive than sucrose and the difference in rooting of cuttings was not remarkable, we recommend the use of refined sugar for the propagation of Spondias scions. There was no significant difference among the carbohydrate concentrations tested for either species.
