Acta Amazonica , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672007000200019
Abstract: seasonal variations of the water level is the most important factor in determining the community of aquatic organisms present in flooded areas in the amazon. many scientific projects developed in this region were and still are being carried out in flooded areas near the city of manaus; however, data can rarely be compared due to a non-standardized nomenclature used to describe the various phases of the flood pulse. the present paper aims to identify and standardize the terminology used to define a hydrological cycle with the purpose of allowing for the analysis of data from different places and multiple years. serial data of the negro river water height taken from the local harbor was considered for the estimations. values of the water height are proposed in order to define the four hydrological periods (rising, flood, lowing, dry) and the intensity of flood and dry periods. a typical, long and short hydrological period was also defined in number of days based on the duration of each period. considering that environmental abiotic and biotic modifications are related to water level fluctuation, the standardization of the hydrological nomenclature may become a useful tool for ecological data analysis.

Abstract: the ornamental discus fish symphysodon aequifasciatus pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. in this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of s. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in piaga?u-purus sustainable development reserve (rds-pp), lower purus river, brazilian amazon. males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for s. aequifasciatus. values of l50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth takes longer in s. aequifasciatus than in other species. average fecundity for female discus was 1490, ranging from 950 to 1892 oocytes and its correlations with standard length and total weight were very low, probably due to the highly compressed discus' body shape. egg size distribution showed four types of patterns, indicating one to four modes besides the reserve oocytes group. our results indicate that s. aequifasciatus shows total spawning, in the beginning of flooding period, with the peculiar capacity of releasing multiple egg batches as a strategy that potentially enhances reproductive success.

Abstract: the parque estadual do cant?o is a protected area in the araguaia river. in a survey carried out during a complete hydrological cycle, 271 species of fish, belonging to 183 genera, 41 families and 12 orders were captured. characidae was the most diverse family with 89 species (32.6% of the total), followed by loricariidae with 23 species (8.4%) and cichlidae with 21 species (7.7%), ten families were represented by only one species. the results showed that the pe cant?o is an area with high diversity of fish species, and that the assemblies are still well preserved, so the existence and maintenance of this park is of high interest for the preservation of the araguaia river fish fauna.

Neotropical Ichthyology , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252010005000001
Abstract: the study considered the influence of the hydrological cycle and gonadal development on the accumulation and use of energy in three fish species from an amazonian flooded area. fishes were sampled over a 24 hour period at monthly intervals between july 2004 and june 2005 using gillnets of different mesh sizes. body cavity fat and gonadosomatic indices were determined, as well as energy content of gonads and muscles. amongst the studied species, different means of energy allocation for reproduction were found: acestrorhynchus falcirostris allocate energy from body cavity fat to its gonads; pygocentrus nattereri uses mainly energy accumulated in the muscles for the process of gonadal maturation; and hoplosternum littorale uses energy accumulated in their muscles and body cavity fat for reproductive processes. it is quite clear that the flood pulse regulates the gain and use of the energy reserves in fishes from the amazonian floodplain.

Abstract: The increase in life expectancy of humans brings new demands, particularly in the areas of health, which must be planned actions to ensure the elderly healthy ageing. And among these are the actions that stimulate mental and social activities of the individual, slowing the degenerative processes of the mind and depression due to isolation. In this sense, the computer courses have been of great importance to this age group, providing both benefits. However, activities geared to call elderly should be specific to it, so as to meet their needs without causing discomfort and/or feelings of failure. This article reports a study that is being developed in a course in basic computing for the elderly, offered in the Institute of Chemistry of UNESP, campus of Araraquara, whose proposal is focusing in its planning and development, the peculiarities of the elderly. Therefore, the methodology adopted for the teaching-learning is different and the material is adequately prepared for the course.

The SL synchronous language, revisited
Roberto Amadio
Computer Science , 2005,
Abstract: We revisit the SL synchronous programming model introduced by Boussinot and De Simone (IEEE, Trans. on Soft. Eng., 1996). We discuss an alternative design of the model including thread spawning and recursive definitions and we explore some basic properties of the revised model: determinism, reactivity, CPS translation to a tail recursive form, computational expressivity, and a compositional notion of program equivalence.
A synchronous pi-calculus
Roberto Amadio
Computer Science , 2006,
Abstract: The SL synchronous programming model is a relaxation of the Esterel synchronous model where the reaction to the absence of a signal within an instant can only happen at the next instant. In previous work, we have revisited the SL synchronous programming model. In particular, we have discussed an alternative design of the model including thread spawning and recursive definitions, introduced a CPS translation to a tail recursive form, and proposed a notion of bisimulation equivalence. In the present work, we extend the tail recursive model with first-order data types obtaining a non-deterministic synchronous model whose complexity is comparable to the one of the pi-calculus. We show that our approach to bisimulation equivalence can cope with this extension and in particular that labelled bisimulation can be characterised as a contextual bisimulation.
