Abstract: The present study was aimed at evaluating the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of leaves of Sida cordifolia Linn. for nephroprotective effect in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Nephrotoxicity was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal administration of gentamicin 100 mg/kg/d for eight days. Effect of concurrent administration of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of leaves of Sida cordifolia Linn.at dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. respectively was given by oral route. Serum creatinine, serum urea, urine creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were determined on day 9. Histopathological study of kidney was also done. Both the extracts produced significant(P<0.001)nephroprotective activity in Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity models as evident by decrease in serum creatinine, serum urea, urine creatinine and BUN levels in extract treated groups which was elevated by gentamicin, which was further confirmed by histopathological study. Gentamicin induced glomerular congestion, blood vessel congestion, and epithelial desquamation, accumulation of inflammatory cells and necrosis of the kidney cells were found to be reduced in the groups receiving extracts of Sida cordifolia Linn.along with gentamicin.

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to evaluate in-vitro antioxidant and anthelmintic activity of ethanolic and aqueous extract from whole plant Sida cordifolia Linn (Malvaceae). The antioxidant activities are evaluated by various antioxidant assays like α, α-Diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, total reducing power, nitric oxide scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging. The various antioxidant activities were compared to standard antioxidants such as ascorbic acid. The antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract is almost quantitatively equivalent to that of the standards used, ascorbic acid. The further anthelmintic activity of whole plant is investigated through using Indian earthworm (Pheretima posthuma) showed that it is one of the most important local medicinal plants both for ritual and ethnomedical practices. Various concentrations of ethanol and aqueous extract (10, 20, 30, 40 mg/ml) of whole plant of Sida cordifolia Linn were tested in the bioassay, which involve determination of time of paralysis of the worms. Albendazole was included as reference standard. The most activity was observed with aqueous extract as compared to standard drug. The results from the above studies indicate that plant Sida cordifolia Linn. possesses potent antioxidant and anthelmintic activity.

Abstract: the analysis of the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of sida cordifolia was evaluated with four different strains of bacteria and nine fungi. the essential oil was tested "in natura" (100 %) and diluted from 32 until 2 %. the microorganisms, bacteria and fungi, were spread in agar muller-hinton and sabouraud dextrose, respectively. s. cordifolia showed inhibitory activity against the microorganisms tested with efficacy of 80 %. when tested against staphylococcus aureus, staphyllococus epidermidis, candida guilliermondii and trichosporon inkin the essential oil showed the best performance.

Abstract: In birds treated with Cyclophosphamide @ 150 mg/kg body weight I/V on 21st day of age produced marked immunosuppression. Administration of A. racemosus, Sida cordifolia in combination with Levamisole was the more effective in producing immunomodulatory effect in immunosuppressed birds. Abstract: purpose: the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of human diseases has increased worldwide. many of them are used by oral administration and, after absorption, may affect many organs. therefore, this study aimed at assessing the effects of the aqueous extract of sida cordifolia leaves, popularly known in brazil as "malva-branca", on liver regeneration. methods: twenty rats were divided into four groups: control, sida100, sida200 and sida400 groups. all animals were submitted to oral administration of distilled water, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of the aqueous extract of sida cordifolia, respectively. immediately after this, they underwent 67% partial hepatectomy. twenty four hours later, their livers were removed. hepatic regeneration was assessed by immunohistochemical staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (pcna) using the pc-10 monoclonal antibody. results: sida100 and sida200 groups disclosed higher liver regeneration indices than control group (p<0.001 and p<0.05, respectively). conclusion: the aqueous extract of sida cordifolia stimulates liver regeneration after 67% partial hepatectomy in rats.
Antistress, adoptogenic activity of Sida cordifolia roots in mice

Abstract: Ethanol extract of roots of Sida cordifolia was evaluated for antistress, adaptogenic activity using cold restraint stress and swim endurance in mice. Mice pretreated with extract of Sida cordifolia showed significant improvement in the swim duration and reduced the elevated WBC, blood glucose and plasma cortisone.

Abstract: The antimicrobial activity of Sida cordifolia leaf extracts (aqueous and methanolic) on pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus fecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis) and fungi (Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans) was tested by disc diffusion method. The aqueous extract was found to be moderately effective against bacteria and exhibited high antifungal activity at a concentration of 2mg/disc. The methanolic extract was effective on bacteria and did not show any antifungal activity. Acetone fraction did not contain any antimicrobial activity. Increasing concentrations of the extracts (aqueous and methanolic) exhibited increased zone of inhibition against the bacteria and fungi (7-20mm). Our results suggest that aqueous extracts of Sida cordifolia leaves show high antimicrobial activity and contains phytochemicals that are responsible for such an activity. Further analysis of the extracts to isolate and identify the phytochemicals from Sida cordifolia will be helpful to test the therapeutic potential and industrial applications.
Addition of Medicinal Weeds in The Ration on Broiler Chicken Performance

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to compare the effect of feeding medicinal weeds namely bandotan, patikan kebo and sidaguri on broiler chicken’s performance. The experiment used 100 broiler chicken 3 days of age and were kept for 5 weeks in battery cages. Each cage was 100 x 80 x 60 cm of size and consist 5 chickens. Design of this experiment was assigned to Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were R0 (Basal ration without medicinal weed), R1 (95% basal ration + 5% bandotan (Ageratum conyzoides L)), R2 (95% basal ration + 5% patikan kebo (Euphorbia hirta L)) dan R3 (95% basal ration + 5% sidaguri (Sida cordifolia)). Ration and drinking water were ad libitum. Measured parameters were feed consumption, average daily gain and feed conversion ratio. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the significant effects by Duncan’s multilple range test (DMRT). Results of this study showed that feeding 5% of medicinal weeds either bandotan, patikan kebo or sidaguri had similarly effect (P>0,05) on feed consumption, average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio of broiler chicken. However, bandotan and sidaguri resulted average daily weight gain lower than patikan kebo. It is concluded that medicinal weeds bandotan, patikan kebo and sidagu could be fed to the chicken up to 5% without significant effect on broiler performance. Abstract: Introduction: Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) is a weed about which not much is known in Colombia. This plant is used in folk medicine to treat oral mucosa, blennorrhea, asthma and bronchitis.In Brazil it finds application as an anti-inflammatory,while in Colombia its "baba" is used for treating hair loss, constipation and internal fever, among other ailments. Objectives: to quantify the saponoside content and evaluate its antioxidant and antifungal functionality. Methods: we prepared organic, aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts from the aerial section of the plant. The saponoside material was quantified by the DNS and p-anisaldehyde methods. The most concentrated extracts were selected for antioxidant and antifungal assays. Results: it was found that Sida cordifolia, collected in Ibague-Colombia, is a good source of saponins with diverse chemical structures, mainly of steroidal nature, some of which may be hecogenin, diosgenin or a homologue. Conclusions: these factors may contribute, at least in part, to the antioxidant and antifungal functionality of Sida cordifolia L., but this capacity may be modified if these saponins act independently or together with some other metabolites of the plant such as tannins, flavonoids steroids, and alkaloids among others. Introducción: Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) es una hierba de la cual se tiene un conocimiento limitado en Colombia. Se utiliza en la medicina popular para el tratamiento de la mucosa oral, la blenorragia, el asma y la bronquitis. En Brasil encuentra aplicación como antiinflamatorio, mientras que en Colombia su "baba" se utiliza para tratar la pérdida del cabello, el estre imiento, y la fiebre interna, entre otros padecimientos. Objetivos: cuantificar el contenido saponósido y evaluar sus propiedades antioxidantes y funcionalidad antifúngica. Métodos: se prepararon extractos orgánicos, acuosos e hidroalcohólicos de la parte aérea de la planta. El material de saponósidos se cuantificó por los métodos del DNS (dinitrosalicylic acid reagent) y de p-anisaldehído. Los extractos más concentrados se seleccionaron para los ensayos antioxidante y antifúngico. Resultados: estos mostraron que Sida cordifolia, colectada en Ibague-Colombia, es una buena fuente de saponinas con diversas estructuras químicas, principalmente de naturaleza esteroidal, algunas de las cuales pueden ser hecogenina, diosgenina o un homólogo. Conclusiones: estos factores pueden contribuir, al menos en parte, en la funcionalidad antioxidante y antifúngica de Sida cordifolia L., pero su capacidad se puede modificar si esas saponinas actúan
Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory Principle from Sida cordifolia Linn

Abstract: A new flavonol glycoside, 3`-(3``,7``-dimethyl- 2``,6``-octadiene)-8-C- -D-glucosyl-kaempferol 3-O- -D-glucoside[1], isolated from Sida cordifolia Linn. was investigated for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in animal models. In the acetic acid induced writhing model, the drug at a dose of 25 and 50 mg kg-1 body weight showed statistically significant (p<0.0001) inhibition of writhing response of 25.12 and 52.30%, respectively. The drug also produced significant increase in the tail flick latency in a dose depended manner (r = 0.92) which were also statistically significant (p<0.0001). In carrageenan induced rat paw edema the compound produced 16.15 and 28.52% inhibition of paw edema at doses of 25 and 50 mg kg-1 body weight at the 3rd h of study.
