Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2007,
Abstract: having a premature baby interned in a neonatal icu is generally considere d a difficult and unexpected moment for many women. to understand such an experience, the present work attempted to apprehend the social representations of mother hood and fatherhood among mothers with interned premature baby in a neonatal intensive care unit (nicu). semi-structured interviews with seven mothers in a public hospital in state of espírito santo (brazil) were conducted, and then submitted to content analysis. the results indicated the recurrence to traditional models of the parental roles, which contributed to an overburden of responsibility for the mothers. it was, though, observed, that the attempt by some fathers for a closer relation with the child was discouraged by some mothers. this study highlights the need to rescue and understand the psychological universe of the mothers, inserting the fathers in this context, since little is known about how fathers understand and cope this delicate period. the results evidenced also the need for new assistance models, sustained by constant critical reflection by the professionals about their own representation s and practices in this context, in order not to direct care and responsibilities solely to the mothers.

Abstract: based on the theory of social representation the present work analyses how adolescents from different social background represent and understand adolescence. three hundred and sixty adolescents from 14 to 23 years old participated in this research: 180 (90 female and 90 male) live in an urban area and study in a private school located in a high-middle class and high class neighborhood, and 180 (90 female and 90 male) live in a rural area and attend an agrotechnical public school.the results pointed out that both groups are anchored on a traditional perception of adolescence as a universal and transitory period. there is, however, a differentiation according to cultural elements present in both groups. therefore, we observe different forms of experiencing adolescence which confirms the most recent tendency to see adolescence as a historically constructed condition.

Descodifica o. Compreens o Leitora. Resolu o de Problemas. Opera es aritméticas. This study is proposed to investigate possible relations between the difficulties in Reading on the one hand, and Mathematics in the general, and Arithmetic in particular, on the other one. Being considered as two similar basic processes at the operatory level, one can admit that the promotion of abilities in one of the fields will have consequences in the other. However, as the processes of learning, both in reading and in Mathematics, imply a diversified set of cognitive abilities, it is important to know the type of interferences generated between these apparently so different areas of knowledge, but susceptible of being explored based on similar theoretical models. Key-words: Learning Difficulties. Decoding. Reading Comprehension. Problem solving. Arithmetic operations.

Abstract: context: chronic feet and leg ulcers affect about 2.7% of the brazilian population, 10% of diabetic patients. the condition represents the second most frequent cause of absence from work in brazil. this shows the need for a product that promotes healing of these wounds at a low cost. objective: to evaluate the effects of metronidazole on ulcer healing by second intention. methods: eighty male rats divided into two groups of 40 had a wound made on their dorsum. the control group was treated with a 0.9% nacl solution and the experimental group was treated with 4% metronidazole. on the third, seventh, 14th and 21st days, the healing process was assessed through macroscopical, histological and immunohistochemical parameters. results: collagen concentration was higher in wounds in the experimental group in all samples. concentration of type i collagen was also significant on the 7th (p = 0.020) and 21st (p = 0.016) days. concentration of type iii collagen was similar in both groups in the initial phase, but it was higher in the experimental group on the 21st day (p = 0.005). angiogenesis, assessed with anti-cd34, revealed a larger number of vessels in the experimental group, with a significant difference on the third (p < 0.001) and 14th (p = 0.003) days. conclusion: metronidazole contributes to healing wounds by second intention and stimulates collagen production and angiogenesis.

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2011.24037
Abstract: Results of photoluminescence measurements for natural and synthetic alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr3+) are presented, where the samples are excited by the 488 nm line of an Ar+ laser, at different temperatures. The main issue is the analysis of the Cr3+ transition in the chrysoberyl matrix (BeAl2O4), with major technological application as active media for laser action. Results indicate anomalous behavior of Cr33+ transition depending on the measurement temperature. A simple model to explain the phenomena is suggested.

Abstract: the leaf area determination is very important in agronomic and physiologic studies, for supplying information on vegetal metabolism, and the techniques used should be simple, fast and accurate. this study aimed to compare different methods for measuring leaf area in the watermelon crop. for that, the accuracy of four measuring methods was evaluated (experiment 1) and leaf area was compared by using the integration method provided by the li-cor? model li 3100 equipment, at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, after being determined with the aid of a scanner (experiment 2). for the experiment 1, a completely randomized design, with four treatments and 19 replications, was used. the treatments were equivalent to the leaf area integrator am 300, leaf area integrator li-cor? model li 3100, leaf discs, and digital image analysis (scanner) methods, and were compared to the reference method (scanner), in accordance with the linear correlation coefficient (r). for the experiment 2, a randomized blocks design, with six treatments and ten replications (leaves), was used, with each leaf being considered a block and their average compared by using the tukey test at 5%. differences were observed for leaf area estimation according to the method employed. the leaf discs method was considered the most accurate one, for the watermelon crop, and the li-cor? model 3100 is not recommended for this crop, particularly when readings are made at longer intervals.
