A Critical Study of the Elastic Properties and Stability of Heusler Compounds: Phase Change and Tetragonal X2YZ Compounds  [PDF]

Abstract: In the present work, the elastic constants and derived properties of tetragonal Heusler compounds were calculated using the high accuracy of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method. To find the criteria required for an accurate calculation, the consequences of increasing the numbers of k-points and plane waves on the convergence of the calculated elastic constants were explored. Once accurate elastic constants were calculated, elastic anisotropies, sound velocities, Debye temperatures, malleability, and other measurable physical properties were determined for the studied systems. The elastic properties suggested metallic bonding with intermediate malleability, between brittle and ductile, for the studied Heusler compounds. To address the effect of off-stoichiometry on the mechanical properties, the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) was used to calculate the elastic constants. The results indicated that an extreme correlation exists between the anisotropy ratio and the stoichiometry of the Heusler compounds, especially in the case of Ni2MnGa. Metastable cubic Ni2MnGa exhibits a very high anisotropy (28) and hypothetical cubic Rh2FeSn violates the Born-Huang stability criteria in the L21 structure. The bulk moduli of the investigated tetragonal compounds do not vary much (130 ...190 GPa). The averaged values of the other elastic moduli are also rather similar, however, rather large differences are found for the elastic anisotropies of the compounds. These are reflected in very different spatial distributions of Young’s moduli when comparing the different compounds. The slowness surfaces of the compounds also differ considerably even though the average sound velocities are in the same order of magnitude (3.2 ... 3.6 km/s). The results demonstrate the importance of the elastic properties not only for purely tetragonal Heusler compounds but also for phase change materials that exhibit magnetic shape memory or magnetocaloric effects.
Historical trends of heavy metal contamination and their sources in lacustrine sediment from Xijiu Lake, Taihu Lake Catchment, China

Abstract: Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg in Xijiu Lake sediment from the Taihu Lake catchment, China, were analyzed. Their contamination state was investigated based on the geoaccumulation index and enrichment factors. Statistical analysis was used to differentiate the anthropogenic versus natural sources of heavy metals (HMs), and the anthropogenic accumulation fluxes were calculated to quantify anthropogenic contribution to HMs. The results indicated that the lake sediment had been heavily contaminated by Cd, enrichment of Zn and Hg was at a relatively high level, while that of Cu and Pb was in the lower-to-moderate level and Cr was in the low enrichment level. Sources of Cr in the sediment were mainly from natural inputs, while other metals, especially Cd, were predominantly derived from anthropogenic sources. In the past century, anthropogenic accumulation fluxes of Pb, Zn and Hg increased by 0.1-47.3 mg/(cm2.yr), 2.4-398.1 mg/(cm2.yr), and 3.7-110.3 ng/(m2.yr), respectively, accounting for most inputs of HMs entering the sediment. The contamination state of HMs varied with industrial development of the catchment, which demonstrated that contamination started in the early 20th century, reached the maximal level between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s, and decreased a little after the implementation of constraints on high contamination industries, although the contamination of some HMs, such as Cd, Zn and Hg, is still at high levels.
Exosomes: Decreased Sensitivity of Lung Cancer A549 Cells to Cisplatin

Abstract: Exosomes are small extracellular membrane vesicles of endocytic origin released by many cells that could be found in most body fluids. The main functions of exosomes are cellular communication and cellular waste clean-up. This study was conducted to determine the involvement of exosomes in the regulation of sensitivity of the lung cancer cell line A549 to cisplatin (DDP). When DDP was added to A549 cells, exosomes secretion was strengthened. Addition of the secreted exosomes to other A549 cells increased the resistance of these A549 cells to DDP. Upon exposure of A549 to DDP, the expression levels of several miRNAs and mRNAs reportedly associated with DDP sensitivity changed significantly in exosomes; these changes may mediate the resistance of A549 cells to DDP. Exosomes released by A549 cells during DDP exposure decreased the sensitivity of other A549 cells to DDP, which may be mediated by miRNAs and mRNAs exchange by exosomes via cell-to-cell communication. Although the detailed mechanism of resistance remains unclear, we believed that inhibition of exosomes formation and release might present a novel strategy for lung cancer treatment in the future.
The isotopic abundance and atomic weight of natural uranium

Abstract: The published measurement data of atomic weight of uranium are shown in table 4[9]. The best results are those measured by Smith and Cowanet al. A r (U) = 238.028 79–238.028 90(3), their result error being ISD. The evaluated value of IUPAC-CAWIA is Ar(U)=238.028 9(1). In this work, the result is Ar(U) = 238.028 91(4). The combined uncertainty has been given according to 2SD of the measurement data through the calibration of a series of standard materials of uranium isotopes. It is reasonable to conclude that in this work the uncertainty which characterizes the measurement quality is better than other published data.

Abstract: 为明确黄瓜绿斑驳花叶病毒(Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus,CGMMV)在葫芦上的种传规律,以西瓜砧木葫芦种子为材料,采用双抗体夹心酶联免疫吸附测定法(DAS-ELISA)、反转录聚合酶链式反应(RT-PCR)与生物学检测相结合的方法研究葫芦种子的带毒率和传毒率的关系,并评价了干热处理对病毒的钝化效果。结果表明,DAS-ELISA灵敏度检测种子时,在感染种子研磨液:健康种子研磨液为1:1 000时,带毒量仍能检测出阳性,RT-PCR和DAS-ELISA 两种方法均能准确检测葫芦种子的带毒情况;6个批次的葫芦种子有4个批次呈阳性,带毒率在0~100%之间,贮藏1年后的传毒率在0~5.6%之间;4个为CGMMV阳性的种子批经干热处理后,仅1株实生苗呈阳性。研究表明,CGMMV在葫芦作物上的隐性带毒现象非常普遍;种子的带毒率高而传毒率低,以表面带毒为主,且非常稳定;72℃ 72 h干热处理葫芦种子能有效地钝化CGMMV。
The relationship between the rate of seed contamination and seed-to-seedling transmission of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) on gourd seeds was studied and the effect of dry heat treatment on the virus passivation process was evaluated by using DAS-ELISA, RT-PCR and biological detection methods. The results showed that the sensitivity of DAS-ELISA detection was a ratio of 1/1 000 of CGMMV infected/healthy seeds in the grinding fluid mixtures. Both DAS-ELISA and RT-PCR methods could accurately detect CGMMV from gourd seed soaking liquid. Among six batches of gourd seeds, four batches of seeds were positive, and the contamination rates were between 0-100%. After one year of storage, the seed-to-seedling transmission rates were between 0-5.6%. Four batches of commercial gourd seeds infested with CGMMV were treated by dry heat treatment (DHT), only one seedling appeared positive. This study indicated that CGMMV hidden poison phenomenon was very common on the gourd crop. The transmission rate of gourd seed-to-seedling was low while the contamination rate was high, which indicated that the virus mainly distributed on the surface of the seeds and they were very stable. CGMMV could be effectively passivated on gourd seeds treated by DHT method at 72℃ for 72 h.

Diagnosis of Premature Senescence of Cotton Using SPAD Value  [PDF]

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in 2011 on an experimental farm at the Cotton Research Insti-tute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Anyang, China. We conducted experiments with a “SPAD-502” meter to quickly measure the relative value of chlorophyll content in the leaf blades of field cotton. Our goal was to seek a suitable leaf on a cotton plant to diagnose senescence status of crop plants at later stages of growth. We began by studying the dynamic change rule of the dis-tal-most four leaves of the cotton plant during the entire growth period with two early-maturing cultivars (CCRI 36, CCRI 50) and two mid-maturing cultivars (CCRI 41, SCRC 28). We also examined the effect of different nitrogen and potassium fertilizer rates on SPAD values of the leaves of SCRC 28. Our results suggest that SPAD values of the 1st distal stem leaves from two early cultivars can act as good indicators of senescence status in the plants, if they are measured between 10 d before the boll-opening stage and 10 d after boll opening stage. Differences of SPAD values of the 3rd distal stem leaves of two mid-maturing cultivars measured between about 15 d before the boll opening stage and 15 d after the boll opening stage can also be used to measure senescence status in these cotton cultivars. The conclusion can be used for cotton producer to manage N fertilizer better at later growth stage.

Abstract: 以2007年在石臼湖采集的浅岩芯钻孔(SJH07-C1)研究近代石臼湖湖泊环境演化历史以及人类活动的影响.运用核素 210 Pb和 137 Cs进行定年,210 Pb 的CRS模式定年结果与 137 Cs方法获得的年代具有较好的可比性.同时分析了岩芯沉积物的理化指标,包括烧失量、总磷、金属元素和磁化率.分析表明:1955年以前地球化学指标表明石臼湖湖泊沉积物中人类活动信息较弱,但总磷和有机质(烧失量)开始出现增加,湖泊营养水平开始升高.1955~1969年,湖泊沉积物磁化率较高,重金属(包括铜、铅、锌和汞)含量快速增加,可能与该期开始大量使用化肥、农药有关,导致入湖污染物增加.1969~1997年期间,1969~1979年时段湖泊沉积物磁化率最高,重金属含量比较稳定,在石臼湖进行了大规模的围垦;1979~1997年,湖泊沉积物磁化率较高但呈减少趋势,重金属含量再次快速增加,总磷增加较快,说明该阶段入湖污染物增加,湖泊营养水平也在增加.1997~2007年,磁化率较低,重金属含量保持在高水平,总磷快速增加,显示该阶段湖泊营养水平较高,但入湖物质通量在减少.
