Vegetation regrowth trends in post forest fire ecosystems across North America from 2000 to 2010  [PDF]
Shuang Li, Christopher Potter
Natural Science (NS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2012.410100
Abstract: The goal of this study was to determine whether climate has affected vegetation regrowth over the past decade (2000 to 2010) in post-fire forest ecosystems of the United States and Canada. Our methodology detected trends in the monthly MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) timeseries within forest areas that burned between 1984 and 1999. The trends in summed growing season EVI (composited to 8 km spatial resolution) within all burned area perimeters showed that nearly 1.6% post-fire forest area declined in vegetation greenness cover significantly (p < 0.05) over the past decade. Nearly 62% of all post-fire forest area showed a non significant EVI regrowth trend from 2000 to 2010. Regression results detected numerous significantly negative trend pixels in post-fire areas from 1994-1999 to indicate that forest regrowth has not yet occurred to any measurable level in many recent wildfire areas across the continent. We found several noteworthy relationships between annual temperature and precipitation patterns and negative post-fire forest EVI trends across North America. Change patterns in the climate moisture index (CMI), growing degree days (GDD), and the standardized precipitation index (SPI) were associated with post-fire forest EVI trends. We conclude that temperature warming-induced change and variability of precipitation at local and regional scales may have altered the trends of large post-fire forest regrowth and could be impacting the resilience of post-fire forest ecosystems in North America.

Abstract: Based on some problems lying in current rural secondary education taking Ling County as an example, this paper proves the necessity and feasibility of moving rural secondary schools to town in the current condition: it is an objective demand by the changes in students; it is a necessary demand to optimize resource allocation and to improve educational quality as well as to improve teachers’ welfare and to optimize staff quality; it is a necessary demand to narrow the disparity between the urban and rural areas and to realize education equality; preferential national policies have offered guarantee for moving rural secondary schools to town; the improved rural conditions has provided it with basic guarantee; the physical and psychological characteristics of students in secondary schools have also provided precondition for it and the development of rural economics has also provided financial support.
Exploration and Reflection on Teachers’ Self-Growth under Network Environment
Shuang Li
International Education Studies , 2010, DOI: 10.5539/ies.v3n2p158
Abstract: As is well known, it is network that has turned the traditional “man-man” educational system made up of by only teachers and students into a new system of “man-machine-man” composed of network as well as teachers and students. In the new system, teachers’ authority has been lowered sharply because students also have access to teachers’ knowledge from the internet at any time and as a result teachers are faced with newer and higher requirements for their comprehensive abilities. Therefore, only by relocating themselves, developing and perfecting themselves constantly, developing their abilities in conformity to the present network era and equipping themselves with a series of necessary qualities can they really control the commanding point and take the commitment of educating people as well as importing knowledge.

Abstract: The reasons for the hit of the Chinese Version Ugly Girl are as follows: to draw closer the psychological distance with the audience; to offer "soul facelift" to the city's white-collar women; to bring the majority of ordinary people the joy of "alternative success"; to give humane care to the hard-working people in the hard situation. The struggle experience of the ugly girl Wudi provides the contemporary workplace human great inspiration: to be self-confident, to smile, to self-suggest positively, to position and persist, and to hone one’s excellent professional qualities.
Empirical Study on Consuming Psychology and Consuming Behavior of Contemporary University Students: Taking Shandong Province as an Example
Shuang Li
Asian Social Science , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v6n1p152
Abstract: As a sort of knowledge, emotion and disposition in the social living conditions, consuming psychology and behavior is not only a wind vane for social development to a certain extent, but also a barometer of the spirit of the time. Therefore, study on consuming psychology and the consuming behavior it affects becomes a significant and unique perspective to analyze state of development of the society and orientation of behaviors of its social members. University students are the vanguard of the mass culture and consumption, so study and analysis in their consuming psychology and behavior is helpful to come to know the consumer trends of contemporary young people, and even the whole society. In this article, the author adopts the research method with combination of questionnaire survey and interview, and conducts a sample survey on university students in several colleges and universities in Shandong Province. The survey indicates the following characteristics of consumption among university students: prominent trend of consumption diversification, obvious disequilibrium of consumption, co-existence of consumption individuation and belongingness, practical consumption being the main stream, increasing consumption of intercourse and entertainment. Enlightenment and recommendations: To cultivate and strengthen the Financial Quotient of university students, to establish scientific consumption value and to advocate green consumption.
Analysis of Characters of Ideal Friends in Contemporary College Students’ Heart: Taking Certain College of Shandong as the Example
Shuang Li
International Journal of Psychological Studies , 2010, DOI: 10.5539/ijps.v2n1p166
Abstract: In this article, 280 college students are randomly selected in certain college of Shandong Province, and the method of factor analysis is used to study the characters of ideal friends in college students’ heart, and the differences of college students’ requirements for ideal friends are compared in different grades, sexes and economic status. The result shows that (1) the ideal friends in contemporary college students’ heart should possess four main characters, i.e. sincere kindness & friendly tolerance, optimistic personality & being good at communication, diligence, assiduity & active enterprising, graceful image & good temperament, (2) female students require higher quality for the factor of “graceful image & good temperament” than male students, (3) two factors of “optimistic personality & being good at communication” and “diligence, assiduity & active enterprising” have no obvious differences in sophomores, juniors and seniors who all require higher quality than freshmen’s requirements for friends, and the factor of “diligence, assiduity & active enterprising” has the interaction of sex and grade, (4) for the factor of “sincere kindness & friendly tolerance”, poor students require higher quality than others for friends.
Monitoring of Net Primary Production in California Rangelands Using Landsat and MODIS Satellite Remote Sensing  [PDF]
Shuang Li, Christopher Potter, Cyrus Hiatt
Natural Resources (NR) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/nr.2012.32009
Abstract: In this study, we present results from the CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) model to estimate net primary production (NPP) in grasslands under different management (ranching versus unmanaged) on the Central Coast of California. The latest model version called CASA Express has been designed to estimate monthly patterns in carbon fixation and plant biomass production using moderate spatial resolution (30 m to 250 m) satellite image data of surface vegetation characteristics. Landsat imagery with 30 m resolution was adjusted by contemporaneous Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to calibrate the model based on previous CASA research. Results showed annual NPP predictions of between 300 - 450 grams C per square meter for coastal rangeland sites. Irrigation increased the predicted NPP carbon flux of grazed lands by 59 grams C per square meter annually compared to unmanaged grasslands. Low intensity grazing activity appeared to promote higher grass regrowth until June, compared to the ungrazed grassland sites. These modeling methods were shown to be successful in capturing the differing seasonal growing cycles of rangeland forage production across the area of individual ranch properties.
Declining Vegetation Growth Rates in the Eastern United States from 2000 to 2010  [PDF]
Christopher Potter, Shuang Li, Cyrus Hiatt
Natural Resources (NR) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/nr.2012.34025
Abstract: Negative trends in the monthly MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) time-series were found to be widespread in natural (non-cropland) ecosystems of the eastern United Statesfrom 2000 to 2010. Four sub-regions were detected with significant declines in summed growing season (May-September) EVI, namely theUpper Great Lakes, the Southern Appalachian, the Mid-Atlantic, and the southeastern Coastal Plain forests ecosystems. More than 20% of the undeveloped ecosystem areas in the four sub-regions with significant negative EVI growing season trends were classified as forested land cover over the entire study period. We detected relationships between annual temperature and precipitation patterns and negative forest EVI trends across these regions. Change patterns in both the climate moisture index (CMI) and growing degree days (GDD) were associated with declining forest EVI growing season trends. We conclude that temperature warming-induced change and variability of precipitation at local and regional scales may have altered the growth trends of large forested areas of the easternUnited Statesover the past decade.
