A Better Lower Bound Estimation of Brennan's Conjecture

Abstract: In this paper, we obtained an equivalent proposition of Brennan`s conjecture. And given two lower bound estimation of the conjecture one of them connected with Schwarzian derivative. The present study also verified the correctness of the conjecture in some special conditions.

Abstract: Statistically based experimental designs were used to construct a mixed-culture community for maximizing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation of pulping effluents by the use of six different strains, i.e., Agrobacterium sp., Bacillus sp., Enterobacter cloacae, Gordonia, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Pseudomonas putida. Significant effects of single and mixed strains on COD degradation were quantified first by applying a fractional factorial design (FFD) of experiments, and four strains were selected as the main driving factors in the process of biodegradation of effluents. Then the Steepest Ascent method was employed to approach the experimental design space, followed by an application of response surface methodology to further optimize the proportion of cell concentration for different strains in pulping effluent. A quadratic model was found to fit COD removal efficiency. Response surface analysis revealed that the optimum levels of the tested variables for the degradation of COD, and optimized cells concentrations (OD600) of four strains in mixed-culture community were 0.35 Agrobacterium sp., 0.38 Bacillus sp., 0.43 Gordonia sp., and 0.38 P. putid., respectively. In a confirmatory experiment, three test runs were performed by using the optimized conditions, and a COD removal efficiency of (65.3 ± 0.5)% was observed, which was in agreement with the prediction.

Abstract: Air pollutants pose a major environmental threat to the respiratory system. Pathogen invasion and the exposure to particulate matters in atmospheric air, particularly, cigarette smoke (CS), have been found to be associated with acute and chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma. Therefore, the search for agents that can protect the respiratory system against potentially harmful substances is of interest in preventive health. Lily bulb Nectar (LBN), which contains Lily bulb, Pyrus pyrifolia N., Siraitia grosvenorii and Apricot kernel as its ingredients, is a health supplement intended to improve the wellness of the respiratory system in humans. Lily bulb, Pyrus pyrifolia N., Siraitia grosvenorii and Apricot kernel are commonly prescribed for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders such as bronchitis, pneumonia and cough in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Pharmacological studies have shown that these herbs can produce beneficial effects on the respiratory tract or even the lungs. In the present study, we investigated the effects of LBN on mouse respiratory tract function under normal and challenged conditions. LBN was first examined for its expectorant and anti-tussive activities in mice. The effect of LBN on long-term exposure to CS was also investigated. Our findings showed that long-term LBN treatment enhanced the expectorant activity and suppressed the SO2-induced coughing in mice. LBN treatment also suppressed the CS-induced inflammation in the respiratory tract, as assessed by differential cell count and cytokine production. In conclusion, long-term LBN consumption may produce beneficial effects on the respiratory tract function in humans, particularly in the face of challenge by irritants in the inhaling air.

Abstract: As a grand policy of realizing the rapid development of the western region and narrowing the income gap between the western region and the eastern and central regions after China’s reform and opening up, it is of great practical significance to objectively study its policy effects. This paper uses the data of municipal districts in Chinese cities from 1997 to 2014 in China City Statistical Yearbook to evaluate the policy effect of the western development strategy by using the method of difference-in-difference propensity score matching (PSM-DID). The research results show that the western development policy has not improved the economic growth of the western region, but has negatively affected the economic growth of the western region. In addition, economic growth in the western region may be due to factors such as fixed asset investment, foreign direct investment, and higher education levels, etc. Therefore, the strategic direction of the development of the western region should focus on human capital investment, improve the market economy system, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between regions in the future.

Abstract: We propose an optical model of a cylindrical lens for fiber coupling based on the method of coupling an angle-ended fiber to the front facet of a chip that is used in high-speed optical receivers.We also study the effect of the packing process on coupling efficiency with the optical model and software simulation.The simulation results show that the optical coupling efficiency is determined by fiber position,the lens design of the photodiode chips,and the shape of the light source.

Abstract: Oxygen delignification can be considered to be the most important part of TCF and ECF bleaching sequences because it allows for cleaner production of pulp. During the process, oxygen gets one electron from lignin in the alkaline condition to form some active oxygen species (AOS), including a superoxide anion radical (O2- ), which is crucial for lignin degradation without damage of carbohydrates. The reaction of O2- on cellulolytic enzymatic lignin (CEL) from Masson pine was studied. The change in active hydroxyl content after reaction with O2- was investigated using 31P-NMR. After reaction, the aliphatic hydroxyl and uncondensed type phenol hydroxyl contents decreased, but the content of carboxylic group increased in Masson pine lignin. Through the analysis with HSQC-2D13C-H technology, β-O-4 linkages could be cleaved by O2- , but β-β and β-5 linkages were observed to be more stable; benzaldehyde and cinnamic aldehyde structures could be oxidized to carboxylic acids by O2- . Guaiacyl units in lignin were more easily degraded than p-hydroxybenzene units.

Abstract: The compositions of alkaline extractives in bamboo sulfonated chemi-mechanical pulps (SCMP) were analyzed by UV spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their effects on peroxide bleaching were studied. The extractives were composed of short-chain aliphatic compounds, phenols, and fatty acids, of which phenols were the major components. The amount of extractives was increased with the dosage of NaOH, and correspondingly, the bleachability of the extracted pulp was improved. When 3.5% NaOH was used, the brightness gain was 5.83%ISO, and the post-color (PC) number was decreased by 55.7%. The phenol compounds, which might easily generate conjugated structures, may play an important role in bleachability of bamboo SCMP and brightness stability of pulp.
Optimal Sensor Placement for Target Localization and Tracking in 2D and 3D

Abstract: This paper analytically characterizes optimal sensor placements for target localization and tracking in 2D and 3D. Three types of sensors are considered: bearing-only, range-only, and received-signal-strength. The optimal placement problems of the three sensor types are formulated as an identical parameter optimization problem and consequently analyzed in a unified framework. Recently developed frame theory is applied to the optimality analysis. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for optimal placements in 2D and 3D. A number of important analytical properties of optimal placements are further explored. In order to verify the analytical analysis, we present a gradient control law that can numerically construct generic optimal placements.
A Visibility Graph Averaging Aggregation Operator

Abstract: The problem of aggregation is considerable importance in many disciplines. In this paper, a new type of operator called visibility graph averaging (VGA) aggregation operator is proposed. This proposed operator is based on the visibility graph which can convert a time series into a graph. The weights are obtained according to the importance of the data in the visibility graph. Finally, the VGA operator is used in the analysis of the TAIEX database to illustrate that it is practical and compared with the classic aggregation operators, it shows its advantage that it not only implements the aggregation of the data purely, but also conserves the time information, and meanwhile, the determination of the weights is more reasonable.
