Beam optimization of RFQ and SFRFQ combined accelerator at Peking University

Abstract: The Peking University Integral Split Ring Radio Frequency Quadrupole(ISR RFQ) accelerator was constructed in 1999 with a high duty factor 16.7% and repetition frequency 166Hz, and it was able to accelerate N+, O+,O-, C+ and He+ from 1.6kev/u to 65keV/u. It was later upgraded as an injector of the Separated Function RFQ (SFRFQ). The experiments indicated that the maximum accelerated O+ beam current could exceed 3.2mA with energy 1.03MeV and an energy spread (FWHM) 3.1%. Then the beam transports through a 1m-long magnetic triplet to the entrance of SFRFQ and is finally accelerated to 1.64MeV. The beam conditioning of RFQ were carefully optimized to satisfy the requirements of the SFRFQ. The combined accelerator eventually can deliver 0.53mA O+ beam with energy 1.65MeV, which has sufficiently demonstrated the feasibility of the SFRFQ structure.
Organic Nitrates Favor Regression of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hypertensive Patients on Chronic Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of nitrates on left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD). Sixty-four PD patients with hypertension were enrolled in this study. All patients accepted antihypertensive drugs at baseline. Thirty-two patients (nitrate group) took isosorbide mononitrate for 24 weeks. The remaining 32 patients (non-nitrate group) took other antihypertensive drugs. Blood pressure (BP), left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) were monitored. Subjects with normal renal function were included as the control group ( n = 30). At baseline, plasma ADMA levels in PD patients were significantly higher than the control group, but there was no significant difference in plasma ADMA levels between the two groups. At the end of the 24-week period, BP, LVMI, LVH prevalence and plasma ADMA levels in the nitrate group were significantly lower than those in the non-nitrate group. BP did not show a significant difference between 12 and 24 weeks in the nitrate group with a reduced need for other medication. Logistic regression analysis showed that nitrate supplementation and SBP reduction were independent risk factors of LVMI change in PD patients after adjusting for age, gender, diabetes history and CCB supplementation. It was concluded that organic nitrates favor regression of LVH in hypertensive patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis, and nitrates may be considered for use before employing the five other antihypertensive agents other than nitrates.
Towards Deep Neural Network Architectures Robust to Adversarial Examples

Abstract: Recent work has shown deep neural networks (DNNs) to be highly susceptible to well-designed, small perturbations at the input layer, or so-called adversarial examples. Taking images as an example, such distortions are often imperceptible, but can result in 100% mis-classification for a state of the art DNN. We study the structure of adversarial examples and explore network topology, pre-processing and training strategies to improve the robustness of DNNs. We perform various experiments to assess the removability of adversarial examples by corrupting with additional noise and pre-processing with denoising autoencoders (DAEs). We find that DAEs can remove substantial amounts of the adversarial noise. How- ever, when stacking the DAE with the original DNN, the resulting network can again be attacked by new adversarial examples with even smaller distortion. As a solution, we propose Deep Contractive Network, a model with a new end-to-end training procedure that includes a smoothness penalty inspired by the contractive autoencoder (CAE). This increases the network robustness to adversarial examples, without a significant performance penalty.

Commercial remote sensing has boosted a new revolution in traditional processing chain. During the development of OVS-1A and OVS-1B, we construct the main processing pipeline for ground and calibration system. Since these two satellites utilize colorful video imaging pattern, the underlying video stabilization and color adjustment is vital for end user. Besides that, a full explanation is given for researchers to shed light on how to promote the imagery quality from manufacturing satellite camera to generate video products. From processing system, the demo cases demonstrate its potential to satisfy end user. Our team also releases the possible improvement for video imaging satellite in the coming future.

A Refined Conjecture For Factoring Iterates Of Quadratic Polynomials Over Finite Fields

Abstract: Jones and Boston conjectured that the factorization process for iterates of irreducible quadratic polynomials over finite fields is approximated by a Markov model. In this paper, we find unexpected and intricate behavior for some quadratic polynomials, in particular for the ones with tail size one. We also propose a multi-step Markov model that explains these new observations better than the model of Jones and Boston.
Neural Adaptive Sequential Monte Carlo

Abstract: Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), or particle filtering, is a popular class of methods for sampling from an intractable target distribution using a sequence of simpler intermediate distributions. Like other importance sampling-based methods, performance is critically dependent on the proposal distribution: a bad proposal can lead to arbitrarily inaccurate estimates of the target distribution. This paper presents a new method for automatically adapting the proposal using an approximation of the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the true posterior and the proposal distribution. The method is very flexible, applicable to any parameterized proposal distribution and it supports online and batch variants. We use the new framework to adapt powerful proposal distributions with rich parameterizations based upon neural networks leading to Neural Adaptive Sequential Monte Carlo (NASMC). Experiments indicate that NASMC significantly improves inference in a non-linear state space model outperforming adaptive proposal methods including the Extended Kalman and Unscented Particle Filters. Experiments also indicate that improved inference translates into improved parameter learning when NASMC is used as a subroutine of Particle Marginal Metropolis Hastings. Finally we show that NASMC is able to train a latent variable recurrent neural network (LV-RNN) achieving results that compete with the state-of-the-art for polymorphic music modelling. NASMC can be seen as bridging the gap between adaptive SMC methods and the recent work in scalable, black-box variational inference.

Abstract: A single-particle microbeam facility has been constructed at the Key Laboratory of Ion Beam Bioengineering (LIBB), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The system was designed to deliver a defined numbers of hydrogen ions, produced by a van de Graaff accelerator, in an energy range of 2.0–3.0 MeV, into an area smaller than that of the nucleus of an individual living cell. The beam is collimated by a borosilicate glass capillary that forms the beam-line exit. An integrated computer program recognizes the cells and locates them one by one over the microbeam exit for irradiation. We present technical details of the CAS-LIBB microbeam facility, particularly on the collimator, hardware, control program, as well as cell irradiation protocols available. Various factors contributing to the targeting and positioning precision are discussed along with accuracy measurement results.
Spatial variability of irrigation factors and their relationships with “corridor-barrier” functions in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region

Abstract: Based on the monthly meteorological data at 58 meteorological stations from 1971 to 2000 in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region (LRGR) and the surrounding areas, six factors including yearly ET 0, maximum monthly ET 0 (May), minimum monthly ET 0 (December), paddy irrigation quota and total agricultural irrigation quota (yearly and main irrigation period from April to June) were selected to examine their spatial variability using a geostatistical approach. The results indicated that the coefficients of Moran’s I, describing the intensity of spatial autocorrelation, were greater in longitudinal direction than in other directions; the spatial variabilities of the six parameters were mainly caused by structural factor accounting for 60.2%–87.9%; the largest variabilities of ET 0 (yearly, in May and December) appeared in the northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest directions. Due to the summer monsoon atmospheric circumfluence from the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and continental warm-dry current in winter, the minimum fractal dimension and the maximum spatial variability of ET 0 (yearly, in May and December) occurred in southwest-northeast and southeast-northwest directions. The highest variabilities of paddy and total agricultural irrigation requirements occurred in the south-north direction due to the vapor and energy diffusion caused by corridor function of the longitudinal rivers. The minimum spatial autocorrelation was in east-west direction, which proves that the six parameters of agricultural irrigation requirement were influenced by the “corridor-barrier” function in the LRGR and its surrounding areas.
