FPGA Implementation of Generalized Hebbian Algorithm for Texture Classification
Shiow-Jyu Lin,Wen-Jyi Hwang,Wei-Hao Lee
Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120506244
Abstract: This paper presents a novel hardware architecture for principal component analysis. The architecture is based on the Generalized Hebbian Algorithm (GHA) because of its simplicity and effectiveness. The architecture is separated into three portions: the weight vector updating unit, the principal computation unit and the memory unit. In the weight vector updating unit, the computation of different synaptic weight vectors shares the same circuit for reducing the area costs. To show the effectiveness of the circuit, a texture classification system based on the proposed architecture is physically implemented by Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). It is embedded in a System-On-Programmable-Chip (SOPC) platform for performance measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture is an efficient design for attaining both high speed performance andlow area costs.
Efficient Architecture for Spike Sorting in Reconfigurable Hardware
Wen-Jyi Hwang,Wei-Hao Lee,Shiow-Jyu Lin,Sheng-Ying Lai
Sensors , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/s131114860
Abstract: This paper presents a novel hardware architecture for fast spike sorting. The architecture is able to perform both the feature extraction and clustering in hardware. The generalized Hebbian algorithm (GHA) and fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm are used for feature extraction and clustering, respectively. The employment of GHA allows efficient computation of principal components for subsequent clustering operations. The FCM is able to achieve near optimal clustering for spike sorting. Its performance is insensitive to the selection of initial cluster centers. The hardware implementations of GHA and FCM feature low area costs and high throughput. In the GHA architecture, the computation of different weight vectors share the same circuit for lowering the area costs. Moreover, in the FCM hardware implementation, the usual iterative operations for updating the membership matrix and cluster centroid are merged into one single updating process to evade the large storage requirement. To show the effectiveness of the circuit, the proposed architecture is physically implemented by field programmable gate array (FPGA). It is embedded in a System-on-Chip (SOC) platform for performance measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture is an efficient spike sorting design for attaining high classification correct rate and high speed computation.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.79128
Abstract: Adaptation to a new culture can be highly stressful, especially during challenging developmental stages such as adolescence. The ways in which adolescents adapt to a culture and their resulting well-being may be influenced substantially by their personality traits as well as the degree to which they are aligned with the values of the new culture. Korean Americans are one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in the US, including a burgeoning population of Korean youth. The purpose of this study was to determine whether specific personality traits of Korean American adolescents or their degree of acculturation would be associated with their mental health problems, and whether specific personality traits would moderate the association between acculturation and mental health problems. 138 Korean American adolescents completed a demographic questionnaire, the revised Stephenson Multigroup Acculturation Scale, the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3, and Achenbach & Rescorla’s Youth Self Report. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that acculturation played a minimal role in predicting mental health problems, while personality traits were strong predictors. Being more reactive to stress and less emotionally stable (greater “neuroticism”) and being less altruistic and cooperative (less “agreeableness”) predicted more mental health problems for Korean American adolescents. In addition, the trait of “openness to experience” played a moderating role. For youth who were more open to experience (curious and independent in their judgments), greater alignment with values of the American culture was a protective factor for their mental health. Findings indicate the need for further research to identify types of mental health problems that may be most affected by specific personality traits and the underlying mechanisms responsible for their effects. It will also be important to examine whether personality traits identified in this research influence mental health similarly across cultures and age groups or whether they are unique to Korean American youth.
Close Friendships and Mental Health of Korean American Adolescents: The Moderating Effect of Personality  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2018.91007
Abstract: During adolescence, the youth increasingly rely on peers for intimacy and support. Since traditional Korean values emphasize the centrality of the family, this shift in emotional attachment may be especially challenging for Korean American youth. However, it is not known whether adolescents who lack a supportive close friendship may be at greater risk for mental health problems. The aims of this study were to determine whether the quality of the adolescents’ closest friendship is associated with the mental health of Korean American adolescents, and whether specific personality traits of the youth may moderate any association between the quality of their friendships and their mental health problems. This cross-sectional study included 138 Korean American adolescents from community settings in California. A demographic questionnaire, the Relationship Quality Questionnaire, the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3, and the Youth Self Report were completed by adolescents. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to examine the aims. Quality of the closest friendship was not a significant predictor of mental health problems for youth in general. However, the personality trait of agreeableness did predict better mental health. Agreeableness also showed a moderating effect, indicating that for youth who had less agreeable, more antagonistic personalities, a high quality relationship with their best friend was associated with fewer mental health problems. Longer residence in the U.S. was also related to better mental health. Findings suggest the need for early identification of youth who have poor relationships with close friends or a more antagonistic personality. It may be especially important to provide supportive mental health interventions for Korean American adolescents with these combined risks.
Quebra de dormência de sementes do feij?o-mungo
Lin, Shiow Shong;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X1999000600021
Abstract: the effects of pre-germination treatments on the dormancy of mungbean seeds were evaluated in the seed laboratory of the universidade federal de santa catarina, florianópolis, sc, brazil. seeds of four mungbean (vigna radiata l., leguminosae) cultivars (pusa 9173, ml 267, nm 51 and chun nam 4) were submitted to treatments with hot water (80°c), alcohol at room temperature and concentrated sulphuric acid. the sulphuric acid treatments were the most effective treatments in terms of germination percentage. the immersion of seeds in alcohol at room temperature during 5 and 10 minutes and seeds immersed in hot water (80°c) during 5 and 10 minutes showed results significantly higher than the control. the hot water (80°c) treatment during 15 minutes caused pronounced seed mortality and reduced drastically the germination percentage. the sulphuric acid treatment during 6 minutes attained the germination percentage of 96%, which was the most promising method. the cultivars pusa 9173, ml 267 and nm 51 showed more intensive dormancy levels than the cultivar chun nam 4.
