Rainfall Variations Due to Twin Typhoons over Northwest Pacific Ocean  [PDF]

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the investigation of the rainfall variations due to twin typhoons Saola and Damrey occurred in 2012 over Northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO). Genesis and landfall of the two typhoons are on the same day, however the track and rainfall area are different. We have chosen the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data for this analysis. The results are illustrating as follows: typhoon Saola produced higher rainfall than typhoon Damery. The rainfall pattern of typhoon Saola having sufficient affect typhoon Damrey rainfall over the ocean, however after landfall produced rainfall over the land. Comparison of two rainfall data sets revealing that TRMM data is better for identifying heavy rainfall due to typhoon.
Typhoon-Induced SST Cooling and Rainfall Variations: The Case of Typhoon CHAN-HOM and Nangka  [PDF]

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the investigation of sea surface temperature (SST) and the rainfall variations due to typhoon CHAN-HOM and Nangka occurred in 2015 over Northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO). On 7-13 July, the SST cooling area occurred mainly in the middle of the two typhoons track, the maximum SST decline reached more than 4℃ during typhoon CHAN-HOM and Nangka passage. Due to the collective effect of typhoon CHAN-HOM and Nangka, the SST cooling phenomenon maintained for about 15 days. Typhoon CHAN- HOM and Nangka produced heavy rainfall and the maximum daily rainfall was 120 mm (8 July) and 130 mm (11 July). In a1, c area, the average temperature and rainfall basically showed a positive correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.54, while on area a2, the correlation coefficient was ﹣0.6.
ONE-POT SYNTHESIS OF HIGHLY LUMINESCENT CdTe QUANTUM DOTS USING SODIUM TELLURITE AS TELLURIUM SOURCE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Abstract: a novel technology has been developed for the synthesis of thioglycolic acid (tga)-capped cdte quantum dots (qds) in aqueous medium. the reaction was carried out in air atmosphere with one-pot by using na2teo3 to replace te or al2te3. the mechanism for the formation of cdte qds is elucidated. the influences of various experimental variables, including refluxing time, ph value, cd/te and cd/tga molar ratios, on the luminescent properties of the obtained cdte qds have been systematically investigated. furthermore, the obtained qds were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectra (ftir), x-ray powder diffraction (xrd) and transmission electron microscopy (tem), respectively. the results demonstrate that, under the optimized experimental conditions, the obtained cdte qds exhibited a narrow photoluminescence band (fwhm33-45 nm) with reproducible room-temperature quantum yields as high as 28 %, the emission color is tunable from green to orange with increasing diameter of qds.

Abstract: The study aimed to explore the Chinese female college students’ attitudes toward skincare brands (including Chinese brands and Japanese and Korean brands) by comparing the results of self-report survey and the Implicit Association Test (IAT). The results showed that participants have inconsistent response patterns in explicit/implicit measures toward Chinese brands and Japanese and Korean brands, and both explicit and implicit attitude measures are significantly differences. That is, participants holds a more positive attitude on Japanese and Korean brands than Chinese brands in explicit attitude, but a more negative in implicit attitude.
Urban niche dynamics of Kaifeng city

Abstract: Niche theory is one of the most important ecological theories. It is widely applied to analyzing such phenomena as competition among, and evolution of, urban ecosystem func-tional modules. This paper describes a study concerning different functional modules of Kaifeng city urban ecosystem. Niche theory and techniques were used to analyze the changes of these functional modules in the period 1994–2003. The results showed that, in the period 1994–2003: (1) Niche value of the atmospheric environment and urban virescence modules increased, while niche value of the water environment and sound environment modules decreased; (2) niche value of the tertiary industry module increased, niche value of the secondary industry module decreased, while niche value of the primary industry module showed little change; and (3) niche value of the infrastructure, resource distribution, and production & social security modules increased, while niche value of the population module decreased. This study may contribute to macroscopic planning of urban functional modules, economic development, and environmental protection.
Impacts of human activity and natural change on the wetland landscape pattern along the Yellow River in Henan Province

Abstract: By using GIS and remote sensing techniques, the paper discusses how human activities have changed along the Yellow River in Henan province, China and how these altered activities have influenced the wetland landscape pattern change from 1987 to 2002. Results show that the total area of the wetland reduces dramatically compared to 1987, the total area of wetland reduces by 19.18%, the number of the patches in 2002 increases by 21.17%, the density increases by 50%, and the total perimeter increases by 1,290,491 m. Disturbed by human activities, landscape diversity index decreases from 1.1740 in 1987 to 0.9803 in 2002. During the last 20 years, the total area of the rice wetland increases, while the others decrease. Among those, the area of the bulrush wetland decreases most. In 1987, it takes 0.5% of the total area, but in 2002, it only takes 0.11%. The interpenetration of human influences on the wetland natural system has been long and close. The impacts of human activities on the spatial pattern of the wetland landscape along the Yellow River in Henan from 1987 to 2002 are great.
Driving factors of forest landscape change in Yiluo River basin

Abstract: The expansion of agriculture is posited as one of the main dynamics of forest landscape change globally, and the robust modeling of these processes is important for policy as well as academic concern. This paper concerns a relatively small area of Yiluo River catchment where considerable attention has been paid to slow down the process of the expansion of agriculture into the remaining natural forests. In the present study, we reconstructed the former forest landscape structure and elucidated the landscape change during a period of about 15 years. Three sets (1987, 1996 and 2002) of maps derived from Landsat-5 images were used for analyses. The result showed that there was a decrease in the area of the forest landscape from 995.60 km2 in 1987 to 650.50 km2 in 2002. Then we examined the degree to which forest landscape conversion could be attributed to a set of factors identified as significant at broader scales, namely topography, distribution of the village clusters (centroids), distance from villages (centroids), and distance from forest edge (1987). By using “spatial analysis” in Arc/gis 8.3, the correlation between forest landscape change and driving factors was constructed. This study found that forest landscape conversion in this region was largely explained by elevation, slope and proximity to village.
Toxicity Assessment of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Early Life Stages

Abstract: Iron oxide nanoparticles have been explored recently for their beneficial applications in many biomedical areas, in environmental remediation, and in various industrial applications. However, potential risks have also been identified with the release of nanoparticles into the environment. To study the ecological effects of iron oxide nanoparticles on aquatic organisms, we used early life stages of the zebrafish (Danio rerio) to examine such effects on embryonic development in this species. The results showed that ≥10 mg/L of iron oxide nanoparticles instigated developmental toxicity in these embryos, causing mortality, hatching delay, and malformation. Moreover, an early life stage test using zebrafish embryos/larvae is also discussed and recommended in this study as an effective protocol for assessing the potential toxicity of nanoparticles. This study is one of the first on developmental toxicity in fish caused by iron oxide nanoparticles in aquatic environments. The results will contribute to the current understanding of the potential ecotoxicological effects of nanoparticles and support the sustainable development of nanotechnology.
Expression and localization of the spore wall protein SWP26 of Nosema bombycis in the silkworm BmN cell line  [PDF]

Abstract:

The microsporidian spore wall proteins, as the main components of the spore wall, play a key role in spore adherence to host cells and in recognition of the parasite by the host during the invasion process. In this study, we used the Bac-to-Bac baculovirus expression system to express the spore wall protein SWP26, fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), in the silkworm BmN cell line. The SWP26 and EGFP genes were inserted into the baculovirus transfer vector pFastBac1. The transfer vector pFastBac1-swp26-egfp was transformed into the bacterium Escherichia coli DHl0Bac/Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) to construct the recombinant vBmswp26-egfp bacmid. The vBmswp26-egfp bacmid DNA was then used to transfect BmN cells to obtain the recombinant baculovirus. Western blotting analysis of total protein lysates in BmN cells infected by the recombinant virus showed a protein band of approximately 51 kDa, which corresponded to the deduced molecular weight of the swp26-egfp fusion protein. In addition, a fluorescence signal was observed in the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm of transfected cells, indicating that SWP26 had been successfully expressed in BmN cells. The SWP26 expression system established in this study lays the foundation for additional molecular and cellular studies, especially those focused on the interaction between the SWP26 protein of Nosema bombycis and the proteins of the silkworm, Bombyx mori.
