Prognostic Value of Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer and Ganglion Cell Complex after Optic Chiasmal Decompression  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper is an attempt to ascertain the role of the optical coherence tomography by measuring the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and ganglion cell complex area to predict postoperative visual outcome after chiasmal decompression. 16 eyes scheduled for chiasmal decompression surgery were assessed before and 3 months after surgery with standard automated perimetry and OCT (optical coherence tomography). Preoperative RNFL (retinal nerve fibre layer) thickness and GCC (ganglion cell complex) area were compared with 20 normal control eyes. 13 cases were operated by microscopic assisted endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach; the remaining 3 cases were operated transcranially. Spearman’s correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between preoperative RNFL thickness, GCC area, postoperative mean deviation and temporal visual field sensitivity (1/Lambert). Preoperative measurements of RNFL thickness and all GCC area were significantly reduced in the patients compared with normal control. 3 months postoperative evaluation showed improvement of the visual field, but reduction in global and sectorial RNFL thickness except for nasal sector. Moreover, absolute postoperative (not pre-post change) visual field parameters were significantly correlated to preoperative RNFL (P = 0.00399 for mean deviation, P = 0.0023 for temporal sensitivity), GCC thickness (P = 0.00736 for mean deviation, P = 0.0469 for temporal sensitivity), with FLV (focal loss value) (P = 0.0012 for mean deviation, P = 0.0021 for temporal sensitivity) showed a higher correlation. Reduced RNFL thickness mainly, and GCC area minimally, were associated with the worst visual field outcome. FLV is a new prognostic value.

Abstract: In this note a simple extension of the complex algebra to higher dimension is proposed. Using the proposed algebra a two dimensional Dirac equation is formulated and its solution is calculated. It is found that there is a sub-algebra where the associative nature can be recovered.

Abstract: ZnO ceramic samples as pellets have been prepared and doped with (1, 2.5, 5, 10 wt%) of MgO powder, sintering at 1300?C, these samples have been treated with laser at 400 J/cm2. X-ray diffraction spectra of the samples show some changes in the X-ray parameters, where d-spacing and the intensities of the peaks are changed. FWMH of all the samples was altered due to MgO dopant and the laser influence microstructure was affected by the laser treatment, also, the texture coefficient is affected.

Abstract: Using the neutral gauginos of and hybridization ideas below the GUT scale, we approach the Dark Matter particle within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In the energy range where supergravity effects can be ignored, it is proposed that such DM particle could be inter- preted in terms of a mixture of Bino and Wino states with a lower bound mass not far above the electroweak scale to account for the observed Dark Matter density. We establish the theoretical origin of this particle and study as well its compositeness and its mass bound.
Application Of Prolene Hernia System For Umbilical Hernia In Patients With Mild To Moderate Ascites

Abstract: Background: In 1998, the Prolene Hernia System (PHS) mesh, consisting of an onlay and an underlay patch attached with a connector, was introduced as an option for tension-free open repair of inguinal hernias combining the benefits of a posterior and anterior repair from an open approach. Our objective was to evaluate the PHS mesh repair of umbilical hernia in ascetics with liver cirrhosis. Patients and methods: non randomized prospective study included 24 cases with mild or moderate ascites , cirrhotics, with small umbilical hernia were subjected to elective repair using prolene hernia system(PHS) under local anathesia, patients were followed up for one and half years. Results: no mortality, one case of bleeding varices after 9 months respond to injection, transient ascetic leak in 6 cases, one case of wound infection respond to antibiotics and dressing and no hernia recurrence. Conclusion: Prolene hernia system is easily applicable and effective method for repair of umbilical hernia with ascites.

Abstract: Authors of that paper proposed a prototype machine translator system to translate scientific English sentences into Ara- bic sentences. This system is based on natural language processing and machine learning. This proposed system is ap- plied in statistical field, which is very important on a mathematical sub field in Math department. The system is ana- lyzed, designed and developed. Author tested the proposed system on some statistical statements. It proves its validity as a prototype system.

Egypt is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to the expected detrimental impacts on coastal zones, agriculture, water security as well as indirect social and health impacts. Egypt is responsible for 0.57% of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Although Egypt is a non-annex I country not requiring any specific emission reduction or limitation targets under the Kyoto protocol, its National plans have included mitigation measures to reduce its greenhouse gases. The main sectors contributing to climate change in Egypt are energy, industry, agriculture and waste. Waste, on the other hand, has been accumulating in the streets of Egypt and along its water banks causing considerable air, soil and water pollution and indirect detrimental health impacts. However, this waste which is composed of organic municipal waste, agricultural residues, agro-industrial waste, animal manure and sewage sludge are valuable biomass resources. Utilizing the waste resources of Egypt especially the biomass or the organic component of this waste will not only solve some of the pressing economic needs of Egypt such as animal fodder, fertilizer and fuel but will also alleviate environmental burdens through decreasing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the sector of waste as well as those of energy, industry and agriculture. This paper quantifies the biomass resources in Egypt generated from different waste resources. Then it demonstrates the efforts that Egypt made to contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions reductions through the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism (CDM). The projects in the waste sector already established in Egypt and approved as CDM projects are listed, which are related to waste management facilities and those which are waste to energy projects. Finally, a list of mitigation projects as proposed by the Egyptian government to decrease GHGs as related to the waste sector are enumerated.

Abstract: Classically presenting with multiple or single peripheral cytopenias of variable severity, the myelodysplastic syndromes may occasionally present with bizarre manifestations that confuse the clinical picture and result in significant delays in making the correct diagnosis. We describe the case of an elderly male patient whose presentation with prolonged unexplained fever coupled with cutaneous, pulmonary and other systemic features of inflammation was finally diagnosed as having a primary myelodysplastic syndrome with associated vasculitis after a delay of 4 years.

The conformity of Saudi dates cultivars to date standards has not been studied extensively. In this study, microbial loads and physicochemical characteristics of four Saudi date cultivars (Sukkary, Khalas, Sugai and Anbara) were determined. Anbara cultivar had significantly higher mould and yeast counts than recommended under Saudi technical regulation and standards for packaged whole dates. Moisture content and insect damage for all studied cultivars fell within Codex standards. Single fruit weight for pitted and unpitted dates was higher than recommended under international standards. Date cultivar had a significant effect on fruit color thus fruit color should be included in Saudi technical regulation and standards for date grading.
