As identidades dos imigrantes e o melting pot nacional
Seyferth, Giralda;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832000001400007
Abstract: the principles behind the idea of brazilian nationality during the period of intense immigration enforced the accomodation of immigrants and their descendants to assimilationist canons contained within the ideals underpinning the formation of the brazilian nation. this in spite of the preponderance of the notion of jus soli within brazilian jurisprudence. primordial sentiments based on notions of jus sanguinis upon wich were founded some of the ethnic identities expressed by groups of immigrants, collided with the precepts of "abrasileiramento" (roughly "becoming brazilianess" or "brazilianization") and its concomitant image of the melting pot. the work presented here discusses different ways of thinking nationality, ethnicity and cultural plurality during the first half of the 20th century. it's empirical reference is the elaboration of ethnic identity within the context of immigration to southern brazil and the concomitant articulations this process maintained with the colonization and occupation of public lands.
A idéia de cultura teuto-brasileira: literatura, identidade e os significados da etnicidade
Seyferth, Giralda;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832004000200007
Abstract: within the context of german immigration to brazil, texts produced by individuals alert to the cultural realities of teuto-brazilian life began to be produced in the 19th century. this literature thrived until 1939 when the nationalization campaign of getulio vargas' estado novo prohibited the publication of texts written in foreign languages. in this article, i seek to analyze the role played by german language literature produced in brazil - especially poetry - in the construction of a cultural identity which combined the principles of "germanhood" with the realities of colonial life in brazilian territory. the social universe i focus upon is "colony" of blumenau in the itajaí valley in the state of santa catarina. there, an emerging elite, which possessed cultural and economic capital, supported a variety of associative activities, maintained a theater and stimulated literary production and distribution, principally through newspapers and almanacs, in a very peculiar appropriation of the notion of kultur.
Campesinato e o Estado no Brasil
Seyferth, Giralda;
Mana , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132011000200006
Abstract: this work discusses some aspects of the conceptual debate surrounding the notions of peasantry and peasant society and the social transformations affecting the rural world, emphasizing the problem of the relation between peasants and the state. the analysis highlights a significant example of this relation, foreign colonization, resulting in public policies designed to stimulate the occupation of empty lands, which began in the south of brazil in 1824. the case allows us to observe the role of the state in controlling a process of populating the land with european immigrants and the consequent formation of a type of ethnic peasantry distinct from other brazilian rural lifeworlds.
Etnicidade, política e ascens?o social: um exemplo teuto-brasileiro
Seyferth, Giralda;
Mana , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93131999000200003
Abstract: german immigrants played a significant part in the process of colonization based on small family holdings, which was initiated in southern brazil in 1824. processes of internal differentiation and social ascension took place alongside the formation of a german-brazilian identity, in the context of territorial occupation centered on family-settlements in colonies. the distinctive aspects of this identity were based on the social and cultural specificity of the german colonies and on jus sanguinis, which contrasts with the imperatives of assimilation dictated by brazilian nationalism as the condition of citizenship. this article looks at the question of social mobility in economics and politics, and controversies associated with sentiments of ethnicity, as seen in an area of german colonization in the state of santa catarina (vale do itajaí) in the first decades of the republic; a period characterized by incipient industrialization based on commercial activity, and by the approximation of the german-brazilian elite to national society.
A assimila??o dos imigrantes como quest?o nacional
Seyferth, Giralda;
Mana , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93131997000100004
Abstract: the nationalization campaign promoted during the estado novo (1937-1945) interfered in the daily lives of immigrants and their descendents in brazil - labeled as aliens because of the prevailing ethnicities and the differentiated cultures - requiring their assimilation (as a synonym for miscegenation) in the name of national unity. this study focuses on aspects of the military discourse related to this campaign and its objectives of forced assimilation, based on documents produced by army officers working as agents for nationalization in the itajaí valley, in the state of santa catarina, a region viewed as a paradigm of "encystment", straying from the principles of "brazilianness". it seeks to demonstrate how - in the campaign by the military - a concept of nation-state prevailed which denied legitimacy to any form of ethnic belonging, in accordance with the very parameters of brazilian nationalist ideology as fomented since the 19th century.
A dimens?o cultural da imigra??o
Seyferth, Giralda;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092011000300007
Abstract: the aim of this work is to analyze aspects of the cultural dimension of immigration in conformity with ethnicity. it focuses an exemplary case in the context of european colonization in the brazilian state of santa catarina - "col?nia blumenau" - during a historical period distinguished by the institution of the republic (1889), and by the significant expansion of the entry of foreigners in brazil, amidst a world system resulting, among other things, from imperialist expansion. this case shows how forms of circulation of cultural goods, including ideas, values, and ethnic ideologies, have contributed to the construction of some german-brazilian ethnicity, indicating the long duration of transnationalism. the constitution of cultural subsystems in the historical situation where the national republican state was being established shows the difficulties in conciliating nation and cultural diversity resulting from immigration.
