Should the Western Aphasia Battery Be Translated into Turkish?
Hava D?NMEZ KEKL?KO?LU,Deniz SEL?UK?,Selda KESKN
N?ropsikiyatri Ar?ivi , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: Aphasia tests are used to classify and diagnose aphasia. Aphasia tests, which can classify aphasia quantitatively, are needed for a standard classification of aphasia and to compare studies performed in different centers. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of the Turkish version of the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), which classifies aphasia quantitatively, in Turkish speaking patients with aphasia. Methods: This study consisted of two stages. In the first stage, WAB was translated and adapted into Turkish. The Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test-Turkish (FAST) and Gulhane Aphasia Test (GAT) were applied to 20 aphasic patients in the second stage. Test results and lesion localizations were evaluated. Results: Two patients, who were found to be normal according to FAST, were evaluated to be aphasic according to the other tests. There was a high degree of correlation between the WAB-Turkish and the GAT scores. The results of the two tests regarding the lesion localization were also similar. The only difference was in the classification of aphasia. Conclusion: The difference in aphasia classification may be due to the personal interpretation of the test administrator during GAT aphasia classification or lack of a WAB standardization study. A standardization study for the Turkish version of WAB will be useful for studies on evaluation and classification of aphasia. (Archives of Neuropsychiatry 2010; 47: 40-6)
The Prognostic Value of Serum Uric Acid Level in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2009,
Abstract: Introduction and Objective: Uric acid is a natural anti-oxidant that plays a role in acute oxidative stress reactions like acute ischemic stroke. In this study, we aimed to search the relation between serum uric acid level, length of hospital stay and severity of stroke in acute stroke patients, and consequently, the prognostic value of serum uric acid level.Patients and Methods: We performed a retrospective study on 100 patients who had presented to the emergency department with the findings of acute ischemic stroke. All the laboratory, radiological and clinical investigations were recorded. All the risk factors, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), laboratory values, clinical findings, length of hospital stay of the patients and the treatment modalities were recorded. Results: The median serum uric acid level was 5.25±2.03 mg/dl. The median level in females was found to be higher than that in males. The length of hospital stay varied from 2 to 57 days and the median value was 13±8.66 days. In the multivariate analysis, increases in the levels of serum uric acid measured were significantly associated with decreased length of hospital stay. We detected a low value correlation between NIHSS and serum uric acid levels, but it was statistically insignificant. According to our results, there was a strong negative correlation between serum uric acid levels and the length of hospital stay, and a weak correlation between the serum uric acid level and the severity of stroke.

Turkish Studies , 2010,
Abstract: This article will focus on the impact of political structure of the Ottoman State on the triplet of beloved-lover-rival in the Divan poetry and the hierarchical relationships generated by this impact, based on the couplets extracted from the poets written between 14th and 18th centuries. These hierarchical relationships are basically related to the concept of “adoration” in Ottoman State structuring and “sense of love” in the Divan poetry. With regard to the topic, the article will also refer to the concept of “metaphor of palace” of Ahmet Hamdi Tanp nar and “amour courtois” dragged by mer Faruk Akün in the Divan literature item. Bu makalede, 14-18.yüzy llar aras nda yaz lm divanlardan se ilen beyitlerden hareketle, Osmanl Devleti’nin siyas yap lanmas n n, Divan iirindeki ma k-a k-rak b ü lüsü üzerindeki etkisi ve bu etkinin hangi hiyerar ik ili kileri do urdu u üzerinde durulacakt r. Bu hiyerar ik ili kiler, temelde Osmanl Devlet yap lanmas ndaki “kulluk” kavram ve Divan iirindeki “a k anlay ” ile ba lant l d r. Makalede ayr ca konuyla ilgili olarak, Ahmet Hamdi Tanp nar’ n “saray istiaresi” kavram na ve mer Faruk Akün’ün Divan edebiyat maddesinde s z konusu etti i “amour courtois”e de at flarda bulunulacakt r.

Journal of Kirsehir Education Faculty , 2007,
Abstract: In this study The Felder and Soloman Index of Learning Styles had been translated to Turkish and the studies on the reliability and validity of index had been performed. The Index of Learning Styles is designed by Felder and Soloman which is based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model. This index has four dimensions namely sensing-intuitive, visual-verbal, active-reflective and sequential-global. Each learning style dimension has associated with 11 items in the index which is particularly designed for science education. According to the person’s responses given to the index, a person’s learning style for each dimension is characterized as mild, moderate and strong. Faculty of engineering, law school and school of education students at Gazi University participated in this study to broaden the range of learning styles represented in the sample. Based on the data collected, The Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated as 0.64 for the index which is translated to Turkish. Furthermore, the learning styles of students in different faculties were compared and the effect of gender on learning styles was investigated. The analysis revealed that, there isn’t any significant difference between males and females. Also, students in all departments which are represented in the sample don’t have distinct preference for sequential and global learning styles.

TAF Preventive Medicine Bulletin , 2006,
Abstract: Avian influenza (bird flu) is a disease of birds caused by influenza viruses closely related to human influenza viruses. The potential for transformation of avian influenza into a form that both causes severe disease in humans and spreads easily from person to person is a great concern for world health. The main purpose of a mask is to help prevent particles (droplets) being expelled into the environment by the wearer. Masks are also resistant to fluids, and help protect the wearer from splashes of blood or other potentially infectious substances. They are not necessarily designed for filtration efficiency, or to seal tightly to the face. Masks and respirators are components of a number of infection control measures intended to protect healthcare workers, and prevent the spread of diseases. All healthcare workers who come into contact with a possible or probable case of any respiratory track infections should wear a respirator conforming to at least EN149:2001 FFP3.

Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2011,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the importance of consumption of the epidermis as an additional diagnostic criteria for malignant melanoma and to evaluate its relationship to clinicopathological findings.Material and Method: The age, gender, localization of the lesion and the histopathological parameters such as tumor type, Breslow thickness, ulceration, Clark's level, mitosis/mm2, lymphocytic infiltration were noted in 40 malignant melanoma cases. Consumption of the epidermis was evaluated in tumor sections. Consumption of the epidermis (COE) due to thinning of the epidermis and loss of rete ridges was noted as (+) or (-). Furthermore, COE was compared with clinical and histopathological parameters. The Shapiro Wilk and Logistic Regression tests were used for statistical analysis. The results were accepted as significant if the p value was <0.05.Results: COE was detected in 60% (24/40) of malignant melanoma cases. A positive correlation was present between COE and head and neck localization (p=0,698), superficial spreading melanoma (p=0,341), ulceration (p=0,097) and brisk lymphocytic infiltration (p=0,200) but the results were not statistically significant. COE was frequently detected in males but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.796). There was no correlation or significant statistical association between COE and age, Breslow thickness, Clark's level or the mitotic index. Conclusion: The detection of COE in most of the patients suggests that COE could be a histopathological criterion in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. The frequent association between COE and the presence of ulceration could also direct attention to COE as regards prognostic importance.
