An Algorithm for Medical Imagining Compression That Is Oriented to ROI-Characteristics Protection  [PDF]

Abstract: In order to protect the ROI (region of interest) characteristics while greatly improving medical imaging compression ratio, we are proposing an algorithm for medical imagining compression that is oriented to ROI-characteristics protection. Firstly, an improved ROI segmentation algorithm is put forward based on the analysis of the ROI segmentation. Then, after the ROI segmented, the ROI edge is extracted and encoded with Freeman chain coding. Finally, the ROI is compressed by lossless compression with shearlet; the ROB (region of background) is compressed by the method of high ratio lossy compression combining with Wavelet and Fractal. Simulation results show that the ROI is segmented precisely. It holds edge integrity and has high quality reconstruction processed by the presented method, helping protect ROI characteristics while greatly improving the compression ratio.
Rupture process of the Wenchuan M8.0 earthquake of Sichuan China: the segmentation feature

Abstract: Moment tensor solution, rupture process and rupture characteristics of the great Wenchuan 8.0 earthquake are studied by using 39 long-period P and SH waveforms with evenly azimuth coverage of stations. Our results reveal that the Wenchuan M8.0 event consisted of 5 sub-events of M w 7.3 occurring succesively in time and space. Rupture started with a M w7.3 introductory strike-slip faulting in the first 12 s, then within 12–40 s, two sub-events with M w 7.6, 7.4 occurred within 80 km northeast from the initial point with the dominant rupture type of thrust moving. From 40 to 62 s, a M w 7.5 and M w 7.4 right-lateral strike-slip type of sub-events occurred on the two sides of Beichuan, 120 km away northeast from the initial point. The whole rupture process lasted 105 s and unilaterally propagated from the initial point on the WS section of the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault to the NE direction, resulting in a 230-km-long surface rupture zone and the average surface dislocation is up to 4 m. Two asperities are identified and the whole rupture process is formed by WS and NE parts. In the WS part named Dujiangyang-Wenchuan, where the initial point is located, the rupture process showed reverse faulting with the maximum slip of 8.2 m. Around Mianzhu, rupture changed to right-lateral strike slip faulting and formed a Beichuan-Qinchuan large slip area. The rupture area on this part is about 10 km in depth, shallower than on the WS part. The maximum slip is 6.53 m. Consequently, there formed 2 segments with the surface dislocation larger than 6 m. One is the Dujiangyan-Wenchuan segment with the maximum surface displacement of 6.44 m, the other is the Beichuan-Qingchuan segment with the maximum surface displacement of 6.53 m. This segmentation may have its geological and tectonic background.

Abstract: One of the aspects that configure the social agreement these days in Ecuador is based on the “Food Sovereignty”. In this sense, this paper tries to identify and validate determinant factors over the consumption of ecological food in Ecuador. Among other factors, the authors analyse the demo-graphic characteristics, the knowledge about organic agriculture, the attitudes towards environmental issues, the considerations about organic product sales, the lifestyles and the main priorities when choosing food. The population of study was the city of Ambato, province of Tungurahua (Ecuador) with a sample size of 400 subjects in order to determine the patterns of organic consumption right there. In particular, this research was conducted through a face-to-face survey of 40 questions considering 86 variables divided into blocks of perceptions, attitudes, behaviours and socio-demographic profiles, such as income source, home size, education level, lifestyle or monthly family incomes. Hence, a model of analysis is determined on the awareness of organic products and its association with ecological purchase.

Abstract: the management of the tomato plant under greenhouse, with emphasis on fruit thinning, contributes significantly to the production of fruits of superior quality, expressing the potential of each cultivar. we determined the effect of fruit thinning on yield and its components in tomato hybrids of the santa cruz and italian types of indeterminate growth, and we performed the qualitative characterization of the fruits, aiming in natura market. twelve fresh-market tomato genotypes (six experimental hybrids and six commercial cultivars) and two training methods (with and without manual fruit thinning) were evaluated. a randomized complete block design was used in this trial, with split-plots and three replications. the plots were represented by genotypes and the subplots were constitued by training methods. number of fruits per plant, yield of marketable and not marketable fruits, average fruit weight, fruit length and fruit width were measured. for quantitative characterization, ph, soluble solids concentration (ss), tritratable acidity (at), ascorbic acid content, ss and at ratio and lycopene content were measured. the fruit thinning increased marketable yield, average weight, length and width for the santa cruz hybrids thx-02 and thx-03 and for thx-04, thx-05 and netuno, classified as italian type. the fruit thinning did not provide benefits for yield and its components for the other evaluated characteristics and genotypes. giuliana and sahel genotypes presented higher marketable yield and average fruit weight. without fruit thinning, 'netuno' reached the highest number of fruits per plant, but the hybrid sahel showed higher marketable yield and average fruit weight. thinning did not affect the organoleptic quality of the genotypes. 'avalon' showed higher ascorbic acid content than 'netuno' and 'sahel', and 'débora max', 'thx-01', 'thx-02' and 'thx-04', which were similar to each other in the content of lycopene, overcame 'giuliana', 'sahel', 'thx-03', and 'thx-06'.

A Texture Segmentation Algorithm Based on Directional Gabor Filters

Abstract: This paper presents a texture segmentation algorithm based on directional Gabor filters when orientation characteristics of textures are taken into account.Incorporating into the human visual characteristics,a design approach of optimal directional Gabor filters is proposed.Each texture can be thought of as containing a narrow range of frequency and orientation components.By filtering an input texture image with Gabor filters tuned to the dominant frequency and orientation component of the textures,it is possible to locate each texture.The magnitude of the channel ouput should be large when the texture exhibits the frequency and orientation characteristics to which the channel's Gabor filter is tuned,vice versa.There are weak intraclass dispersion and strong interclass dispersion in the filtered image,and the issue of texture segmentation is translated into that of traditional image segmentation.Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional approaches in terms of both objective measurements and visual evaluation.

Abstract: In this Review paper, it is intended to summarize and compare the methods of automatic detection of brain tumor through Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) used in different stages of Computer Aided Detection System (CAD).In particular, Image Acquisition, preprocessing and enhancement, segmentation steps are studied and compared. In Preprocessing and Enhancement stage, medical image is converted into standard format with contrast manipulation; noise reduction by background removal, edge sharpening, filtering process and removal of film artificates.Segmentation determines as the process of dividing an image into disjoint homogenous regions of amedical image. The amount of resources required to describe large set of data is simplified and selected in for tissue segmentation.
Static and Dynamic Characterization of High-Speed Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power Transistors  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper describes the operating characteristics of NPN 4H-SiC (a polytype of silicon carbide) bipolar junction transistor (BJT) and 4H-SiC Darlington Pairs. A large amount of experimental data was collected. The wafer BJTs were able to block over the rated 600 V in the common-emitter configuration and the TO-220 BJTs were able to block over the 1200 V rated voltage. In the thermal analysis, it is found out that at higher temperatures the forward and reverse (blocking) characteristics were stable at 100°C and 200°C. The transistors show positive temperature coefficients of forward voltage (Vf). In general the current gain (β) characteristics obtained (with VCE = 6 V) were approximately as expected for the BJTs. The β‘s were very low (2 to 5 for wafer BJTs, 5 to 20 for the wafer Darlington Pairs, and 5 to 30 for TO-220 BJTs). The large amount of experimental data collected confirms some of the superior properties of the Silicon carbide material when used to fabricate power semiconductor devices, namely high thermal conductivity and high temperature operability. The data presented here will establish the trends and the performance of silicon carbide devices. The silicon carbide BJT has fast switching and recovery characteristics. From the analysis, silicon carbide power devices will be smaller (about 20 times) than a similar silicon power device and with reduced power losses. Silicon carbide will also be very useful for device integration in high densities, as found in integrated chips for current handling capabilities, for applications in instrumentation and measurements. Presently, most of the research is on improving the basic silicon carbide material quality, power device optimization, and applications engineering using devices that have been developed to date.

Abstract: Image segmentation method based on level set model has wide potential application for its excellent seg-mentation result. However its complex computing restricts its application in video segmentation. In order to improve the speed of image segmentation, this paper presents a new level set initialization method based on Chan-Vese level set model. After a simple iterative, we can separate out the outline of objects. Experiments show that the method is simple and efficient, with good separation effects. The improved Chan-Vese method can be applied in video segmentation.

Abstract: Manuscript preprocessing is the earliest stage in transliteration process of manuscripts in Javanese scripts. Manuscript preprocessing stage is aimed to produce images of letters which form the manuscripts to be processed further in manuscript transliteration system. There are four main steps in manuscript preprocessing, which are manuscript binarization, noise reduction, line segmentation, and character segmentation for every line image produced by line segmentation. The result of the test on parts of PB.A57 manuscript which contains 291 character images, with 95% level of confidence concluded that the success percentage of preprocessing in producing Javanese character images ranged 85.9% - 94.82%.
