Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101981000300008
Abstract: one hundred samples of creamy sweets were collected from 40 bakeries in the city of s. paulo (brazil), for the determination of staphylococcus aureus counts per gram of food. after morphological and biochemical identification, phagetyping was performed and production of enterotoxin verified. of the samples collected 38.0% were positive for staphylococcus aureus. these samples came from 21 (52.5%) of the 40 bakeries. of those positive, 7.0% were positive for enterotoxin, 5.0% for type c, 1.0% type b, and 1.0% type d. of the 76 strains of staphylococcus aureus isolated, 39 (51.5%) could not be classified according to known phagetypes. of the remainder, those lysed by group i phages alone or associated to other groups predominated (21.2% and 35.5% respectively). strains not classified under known phagetypes were isolated from 76.2% of positive establishments.
Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1977, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101977000300013
Abstract: the presence of major antigens, 1, 2 and 3 were determined in 30 strains of b. pertussis isolated from children with whooping-cough hospitalized at the hospital emílio ribas, s?o paulo brazil. the method used was the slide-agglutination test. tests showed that 25(83.3%) of strains were positives for factors 1, 2 and 3. factores 1 and 3 alone were present in 3 (10%) of strains and 1 and 2 alone in 2 (6.7%).
Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1973, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101973000400011
Abstract: cultures from cough plates and swabs were performed in 255 children with whooping-cough symptoms, hospitalized at "hospital de isolamento emilio ribas" in s. paulo. complement fixation and agglutination tests for bordetella pertussis, agglutination tests for b. parapertussis and complement fixation test for adenovirus were performed in 46 children, using two blood samples taken one month apart; the isolation results for bacteria of genus bordetella were correlated to the, period of illness, some of the major symptoms and the clinical diagnosis. a discussion of the efficiency and limitations of both bacteriological and serological tests in the laboratory diagnosis is presented.
Iaria,Sebastio Timo; Cotillo Z.,Luis;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101967000100013
Abstract: a modification of the phenylalanine agar medium is proposed. the objective is the simplification of the deamination test. the modification consist in adding ferric ammonium citrate to the medium.
Iaria,Sebastio Timo; Cotillo Z.,Luis;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101967000100012
Abstract: a new culture medium for the isolation of enterobacteriaceae is proposed. it is based on the property common to proteus and providence of deaminating phenylalanine. in the culture medium here proposed the colonies of the mentioned microorganisms show a characteristic brown colour. colonies of other enterobacteriaceas show a quite different aspect.
Reis Filho,Stelito Assis dos; Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101981000400007
Abstract: one hundred and five samples of five different brands of butter in the supermarkets of the city of s. paulo, brazil were brought in for testing every week for 21 weeks. from the aqueous phase, counts were made for mesophilic and psichrophilic (using the standard plate count, agar and gelysate agar), coliform, proteolytic, and lipolytic bacteria, as well as for yeasts and molds. results were compared with parameters proposed by several researchers. in many cases, the count values can be considered high, but these high counts may be due to inadequate processing and/or inadequate storage.
Castro,Maria Marluce de Melo Vasconcelos; Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1984, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101984000300005
Abstract: research into the occurrence of s. aureus in the kitchen staffs of several hospitals was carried out. samples were collected from the nasal vestibules of seventy eight people from eight hospitals in jo?o pessoa, paraíba, brazil. tests for phagetyping and capacity for enterotoxin production were performed on the strains isolated. the agar baird-parker plaque technique was employed to isolate s. aureus incubated at 37°c for 24-48 hours. the following techniques were used to identify the strains isolated: morphology, glucose fermentation/ oxidation and the production test for the following enzimes: catalase, coagulase, desoribonuclease (dnase) and thermonuclease (tnase). the celophane sac culture method was employed to verify the enterotoxigenic capacity of the s. aureus strains. of the total number of people examined, thirty three (42.3%) were nasal carriers of s. aureus and enterotoxigenic strains were found in five (6.4%). strains producing staphylococcal enterotoxin type b were found in two of these last, and in the other three, strains producing enterotoxins types c, ae and abe, respectively. fifty nine strains were submitted to phagetyping and fifty four strains (91.5%) were shown to be phage-typeable. there was found to be a predominance of strains lysed by phages of group iii, followed by those of the "non classified" group, isolated or in association.
Christov?o,Dacio de Almeida; Iaria,Sebastio Timo; Candeias,José Alberto N.;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101967000100002
Abstract: samples of irrigation water taken from eleven vegetable gardens of the city of s?o paulo were submitted to bacteriological examination. five samples were taken from five different points in each case; mpn per 100 ml were determined both for coliforms and escherichia coli. all samples revealed heavy fecal polution, showing completely unsatisfactory sanitary conditions of the irrigation water and the need severe control measures of water for irrigation.
Christov?o,Dácio de Almeida; Candeias,José Alberto N.; Iaria,Sebastio Timo;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101967000100003
Abstract: five of the 11 samples of irrigation water taken from vegetable gardens of the city of s. paulo, submitted to virological examination, gave positive results for the following enteroviruses: poliovirus-1, poliovirus-3, coxsackie virus a16 and coxsackie virus a7. the resin method rendered the highest yield of isolations in comparison with the unconcentrated method. the isolation of enteroviruses from irrigation waters reflects the unsatisfactory conditions of the same and emphazises the sanitary aspect of this problem.
