La presencia obnubilante del populismo
Sebastían Barros
Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2012,

Abstract: The history of cartography has undergone a revolution in terms of disciplinary expectations and academic production. One of the principal figures behind this shift, Brian Harley, explored the relationship between cartography, knowledge, and power, stimulating the analysis of the role of maps and cartographic rationality in culture, social, and political terms. This article summarizes his contributions and provides an overview on the state of the history of cartography internationally and in Colombia and Latin America.
Persuasive Oral Hygiene Communications in Uruguay and Spain
Yvonne A.B. Buunk-Werkhoven,Arie Dijkstra,María Eugenia Jaso,Sebastían Acevedo
Cross-Cultural Communication , 2011, DOI: 10.3968/1006
Abstract: This experimental intervention study examined the extent to which the persuasive effects of positively and negatively framed messages designed to promote oral hygiene behavior, were moderated by individual differences. Firstly, two measure of regulatory focus (i.e., promotion and prevention focus) were tested as moderators. Secondly, two contextual individual differences (i.e, level of education and country) were tested as moderators. One hundred and fifty five dental patients who visited a dental faculty in Montevideo (Uruguay) and a dental faculty in Valencia (Spain) participated in this study. They were at each faculty randomly assigned to the positive or the negative frame condition and completed a multiple culturally adapted questionnaire. The results showed that regulatory focus and level of education moderated the persuasive effects of both message frames, but that the direction of the moderation depended on country. This study illustrates that message framing effects in a naturalistic setting, just before the examination or treatment started, can have differential effects depending on the individual’s regulatory focus, education level and the country in which it is applied. Although not all results patterns could be explained satisfactorily, the patterns strongly suggest that messages tailored to individual differences may be more effective than a so called ‘one-size fits all’ approach.
Pricing stocks with yardsticks and sentiments

Quantitative Finance , 2011,
Abstract: Human decision making by professionals trading daily in the stock market can be a daunting task. It includes decisions on whether to keep on investing or to exit a market subject to huge price swings, and how to price in news or rumors attributed to a specific stock. The question then arises how professional traders, who specialize in daily buying and selling large amounts of a given stock, know how to properly price a given stock on a given day? Here we introduce the idea that people use heuristics, or "rules of thumb", in terms of "yard sticks" from the performance of the other stocks in a stock index. The under- /over-performance with respect to such a yard stick then signifies a general negative/positive sentiment of the market participants towards a given stock. Using empirical data of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, stocks are shown to have daily performances with a clear tendency to cluster around the measures introduced by the yard sticks. We illustrate how sentiments, most likely due to insider information, can influence the performance of a given stock over period of months, and in one case years.
Mitochondrial Translation in Health and Disease  [PDF]
Claudia C. Ferreiro-Barros, Mario H. Barros
Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2013.32A001
Abstract:

Mitochondrial disorders have become the most common cause of inborn errors of metabolism. Impairments in mitochondrial protein synthesis are one of the causes of these diseases, which are clinically and genetically heterogeneous. The mitochondrial translation machinery decodes 13 polypeptides essential for the oxidative phosphorylation process. Mitochondria protein synthesis depends on the integrity of mitochondrial rRNAs and tRNAs genes, and at least one hundred of nuclear encoded products. Diseases caused by mutations in mitochondrial genes as well as in ribosomal proteins, translational factors, RNA modifying enzymes, and all other constituents of the translational machinery have been described in patients with combine respiratory chain deficiency, and are the object of this review.

A global view of industrial logistics
Barros, Lilian;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1997000200004
Abstract: the term "industrial logistics" is a wide-reaching concept which incorporates various forms of supporting activities. in this paper, an attempt is made to provide a definition of the term which is broad enough to incorporate these various views. in a few words, there are three large categories of logistic support: (i) product support; (ii) production support, and (iii) industrial sector support. although not new as a concept, there has been a recent surge of interest about industrial logistics, for good reasons. one of them might be that the absence of explicit integrated logistic considerations may explain the widening technological gap between the developed and developing worlds.
Clima e endemias tropicais
Barros, Marcus;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142006000300025
Abstract: this article depicts discrete ways of understanding the tropics and the relationship between tropical climate and people's health. by rejecting the biased notion that diseases derive solely from climatic conditions, the author proposes analyses more concerned with the underlying socioeconomic reality, more humanitarian and less fatalist, and conceives sustainable development as the way to achieve a balance between human life and nature.
Barros,Henrique;
Arquivos de Medicina , 2006,
Abstract: epidemiology is recognized as a fundamental science for both public health and clinics, providing technical approaches, methodological solutions and original information essential to answer the different challenges posed in the field of health research, from the identification of needs to the evaluation of interventions. the extent of the method that justifies epidemiology as an autonomous scientific discipline and the comprehensiveness of its domains, both fundamental and substantive, make epidemiology one of the most fascinating and, by nature, modern areas of medical knowledge and reasoning. this article covers the landmarks that contributed to shape the epidemiological thinking throughout history, and the challenges currently faced by this discipline.
Barros, Candida;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502011000200005
Abstract: the aim of this study was to analyse the linguistic policy of the church with regard to confession in a multilingual context between the 16th and 18th centuries. the documents used in the analysis included theological discussions in europe about the legitimacy (or not) of the interpreter in this religious context, as well as confessionaries in indian languages during the evangelisation period carried out by the spanish and the portuguese. the confessions in indian languages were examined through their use of orientation signals used to guide the missionary in the dialogue with the penitent. the form of organization of the confessionaries in the indian languages was a textual genre appropriate for learning a foreign language. in particular, we have compared the position of the jesuits concerning the interpreter in two settings: before and after the establishment of a confessionary in tupi. in conclusion, we examine the adaptations in the european discussion on the role of the interpreter brought about by the evangelisation of the indians.
