Reflex?es sobre a imbrica??o entre ciência, tecnologia e sociedade
Schor, Tatiana;
Scientiae Studia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-31662007000300004
Abstract: this paper aims to conceptualize science and technology and characterize the relationship between them. based on lacey, science is defined as a pattern of rationality that explains and develops technology. from the understanding of this duplicity (explanation and development) in the relationship between science and technology it is argued that both have an important and necessary insertion in the social processes and values. at the same time science is influenced by these processes, it influences the society characterizing what granovetter calls embeddedness of a sphere of social life understood as autonomous - the science - in society. the power of this pattern of rationality configured in the relationship between science and technology is exactly the link between social values and the related cognitive values produced by this form of knowledge. in order to explore this thesis an illustrative case is proposed: the large scale experiment of interaction of biosphere-atmosphere in amazonia - lba. to analyze it a specific theoretical-methodological perspective on science and technics was chosen, that of bruno latour. the discussion explored in this paper lies in the frontier of sociology and philosophy of science.
UN ENSAYO SOBRE EL SURGIMIENTO DE CORTES CONSTITUCIONALES: LOS CASOS DE MéXICO Y COLOMBIA
Schor,Miguel;
Revista de Economía Institucional , 2011,
Abstract: this essay explores the emergence of the mexican supreme court and the colombian constitutional court as powerful political actors. mexico and colombia undertook constitutional transformations designed to empower their respective national high courts in the 1990s to facilitate a democratic transition. these constitutional transformations opened up political space for the mexican supreme court and the colombian constitutional court to begin to displace political actors in the tasks of constitutional construction and maintenance. these two courts play different roles, however, in their respective democratic orders. mexico chose to empower its supreme court to police vertical and horizontal separation of powers whereas colombia fashioned a constitutional court whose task is to deepen the social bases of democracy by constructing rights. this essay argues that the constitutional changes that occurred are a necessary but not sufficient explanation for the role these two courts play. the agenda courts undertake is shaped both by short-term political bargains and by long-term societal transformations. as a result of both the bargains that led to the adoption of a new constitution and broader intellectual transformations regarding the role of courts in effectuating constitutional guarantees, the colombian constitutional court has pursued a more ambitious agenda than the mexican supreme court.

INSTITUI ES DE PESQUISA EM MEIO AMBIENTE: o caso do BIOTA e do LBA
Tatiana SCHOR
Revista ACTA Geográfica , 2007,
Abstract: This article questions the possibility that environmental research programs be considered as institutions. To analyse this problematic it proposes not only a theoretical approach but also a case study. The case study, necessary to understand the relationship research programinstitution, is base on two important environmental research programs that deals with biodiversity (BIOTA) and global environmental change). As a result of the analysis is the consideration that the research program can be considered as an instituion and as such it is necessary to plan the institutional design since the beggining of the program.
Tumour-stromal interactions: Phenotypic and genetic alterations in mammary stroma - implications for tumour progression
Seth L Schor, Ana M Schor
Breast Cancer Research , 2001, DOI: 10.1186/bcr325
Abstract: The pathogenesis of common human cancers is driven by the progressive accumulation of genetic lesions within the target epithelial cell population. Perturbations in the functionality of particular constellations of these oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes gradually confer the emerging population of premalignant and malignant cells with a proliferative advantage compared with their normal counterparts, as well as increasingly aberrant phenotypic characteristics, such as the capacity for local invasion and metastasis [1,2]. During the past few years, emphasis has gradually shifted away from essentially cataloguing these genetic lesions to functional studies that are concerned with their consequences on gene expression and with the intracellular pathways that are responsible for manifesting perturbed epithelial cell behaviour [3].Although this focus on the target epithelial cell population is central to our understanding of cancer pathogenesis, it has long been our contention that such an exclusively 'epithelio-centric' view is too restricted and that regulatory signals that originate in surrounding tissues also make a clinically significant contribution to the kinetics of disease progression [4,5]. This view now sits comfortably within mainstream thought. It is supported by a number of contemporary reviews that concluded that stromal and epithelial cells exert reciprocal effects on the behaviours of each other, and that these essentially epigenetic, tissue-level interactions result in 'cell activation' and thereby contribute to tumour progression [6]. No rigorous criteria that define cell activation are currently available. It is generally accepted, however, that these collectively involve the re-expression of certain 'foetal-like' phenotypic characteristics, including changes in cell morphology and the secretion of various cytokines, 'oncofoetal' isoforms of matrix macromolecules and matrix-degrading enzymes. Acting together, these molecules orchestrate important

Investiga??o sobre ocorrência de aborto em pacientes de hospital de centro urbano do Estado de S?o Paulo, Brasil
Schor,Néia;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101990000200010
Abstract: certain characteristics - biological, demographical, social and institutional - based on data collected from the recorded case histories of 2,588 women suffering complications after abortion, attended in a hospital of santo andre, an industrial urban area of greater s. paulo, state of s. paulo, brazil, in the period from january 1978 to december 1982, are identified data show a two-fold increase in the number of women with complications after abortion over the period studied, rising progressively from 302 in 1978, to 672 in 1982. however, the number of births attended at the same hospital underwent an increase of only 14% in the same period, resulting in an average abortion/birth ratio of 1:3.6 and 1:1.8 in 1978 and 1982, respectively. the majority of the population under study (60%) professed nonskilled occupations. age presented a statistically significant relationship with marital status, colour, profession and gestational results. a significant relationship was also observed between age at first menstruation, age at first sexual relationship and age at first pregnancy among those women belonging to the primigesta group.
