Der pl tzliche Herztod bei Diabetes mellitus
Schnell O
Optimal Experimental Design to Estimate Statistically Significant Periods of Oscillations in Time Course Data

PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0093826
Abstract: We investigated commonly used methods (Autocorrelation, Enright, and Discrete Fourier Transform) to estimate the periodicity of oscillatory data and determine which method most accurately estimated periods while being least vulnerable to the presence of noise. Both simulated and experimental data were used in the analysis performed. We determined the significance of calculated periods by applying these methods to several random permutations of the data and then calculating the probability of obtaining the period's peak in the corresponding periodograms. Our analysis suggests that the Enright method is the most accurate for estimating the period of oscillatory data. We further show that to accurately estimate the period of oscillatory data, it is necessary that at least five cycles of data are sampled, using at least four data points per cycle. These results suggest that the Enright method should be more widely applied in order to improve the analysis of oscillatory data.
Intersubjectivity in Husserl’s Work
Alexander Schnell
Meta : Research in Hermeneutics, Phenomenology and Practical Philosophy , 2010,
Abstract: In this study, the author develops an original reading of the Fifth Cartesian Meditation. This text, far from giving rise to a “transcendental solipsism”, as classical commentators (Ricoeur, Lévinas, Derrida, etc.) claim, leads to a constitution of intersubjectivity on various levels (“primordial”, “intersubjective” et “objective”). In its center, a “phenomenological construction” operates, i.e. a methodological piece that masters the genetic approach of intersubjectivity. Closely following the “almost mathematical” rigour of this crucial text of Husserl’s phenomenology, the author equally tackles the issue of the constitution of the experience of the other and the truly intersubjective structure of transcendental subjectivity. The article concludes with the metaphysical results of the analysis of the experience of the other.
Are Germans suffering from a crisis of meaning? Insights into meaning research by data of a representative German sample
Tatjana Schnell
Journal für Psychologie , 2008,
Abstract: Are Germans suffering from a crisis of meaning – as supposed by Chancellor Merkel in 2005? Following a short introduction to meaning research, and differentiations of the construct of meaning in life, results of a representative study among 603 Germans are reported. Degrees of potential crises of meaning, meaningfulness, and relevance of 26 sources of meaning were assessed by the Sources of Meaning Questionnaire (SoMe, German: LeBe; Schnell & Becker 2007). Data reveal a relatively low prevalence of crises of meaning (4%) – while not-randomly missing values could be partly responsible for the low frequency. One third of the sample appears as existentially indifferent: a newly discovered subpopulation of people who neither experience their lives as meaningful, nor suffer from a lack of meaning. For this group, relevance of sources of meaning is altogether lower than for those who experience their lives as meaningful; partially, it is even lower than for individuals who suffer from a crisis of meaning. The existentially indifferent show very low values in self-knowledge, spirituality, explicit religiosity, and generativity. A multitude of sources of meaning contributes to the Germans' experience of meaningfulness in the beginning of the 21st century. Characteristic orientations are those towards morality, harmony, care, development, and community. Very low mean relevance is ascribed to explicit religiosity, followed by spirituality. Results show that the experience of meaningfulness increases with the degree of self-transcendence (depth) encompassed by characteristic sources of meaning. Meaningfulness also rises with the number of characteristic sources of meaning (breadth), and it is more pronounced, the more diverse these sources of meaning are (balance).

Primitive cohomology and the tube mapping
Christian Schnell
Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension d. We show that its primitive cohomology in degree d is generated by certain "tube classes," constructed from the monodromy of the family of smooth hyperplane sections on X. The proof makes use of a result about the group cohomology of certain representations that may be of independent interest.
Idempotent ultrafilters and polynomial recurrence

Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: We give a new proof of a polynomial recurrence result due to Bergelson, Furstenberg, and McCutcheon, using idempotent ultrafilters instead of IP-limits.
Canonical extensions of local systems
Christian Schnell
Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: A local system H on a complex manifold M can be viewed in two ways--either as a locally free sheaf, or as a union of covering spaces T = T(H). When M is an open set in a bigger manifold, the local system will generally not extend, because of local monodromy. This paper proposes an extension of the local system as an analytic space, in the case when the complement of M has normal crossing singularities, and the local system is unipotent along the boundary divisor. The analytic space is obtained by taking the closure of T inside the total space of Deligne's canonical extension of the associated vector bundle. It is not normal, but its normalization is locally toric.
Torsion points on cohomology support loci: from D-modules to Simpson's theorem
Christian Schnell
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We study cohomology support loci of regular holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties, and obtain conditions under which each irreducible component of such a locus contains a torsion point. One case is that both the D-module and the corresponding perverse sheaf are defined over a number field; another case is that the D-module underlies a grade-polarizable mixed Hodge module with a Z-structure. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for Simpson's result that Green-Lazarsfeld sets are translates of subtori by torsion points.
