Complexos e complexidade
Del Nero, Henrique Schützer;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141994000100015
Abstract: cognitive science as a reaction against behaviorism is presented, not in a complete way, but in an informal and fragmented outlook. the old problem of the relation between the mind and the brain pervades cognitive concepts. in spite of the strong computational appeal of cognitive science, understanding what computation means, and all its different interpretations, is also suggested, including some considerations on models and other mind attributes.
Sincroniza??o e Consciência: Fundamentos Naturais da Cultura ou Fundamentos Culturais da Natureza?

Psicologia USP , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65641997000200004
Abstract: consciousness is the key element of the mental life. it can be understood as an evolutionary tool that scaffolded valorized redescription of presumed acts and perceptions. consciousness that emerges from the synchronization of neuronal modules would emerge thanks to four necessary conditions: the increase of cerebral tissue (particularly in neocortical areas), the appearance of language, the possibility of recombination of neuronal processing modules through synchronization and the necessity of establishing a valorized discourse of action, the very condition for the appearance of an ethical approach towards the fellow.

Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782007000300012
Abstract: high speed cutting (hsc) offers the opportunity to significantly reduce machining times as well as to minimize manual rework for complex free form surfaces in the die and mould making industry. to achieve the best results it is also necessary to apply hsc-suitable machining strategies to perform optimal high speed milling operations. this paper presents a method to use free form features to improve the automatic generation of high speed machining information for specific geometric areas to create hsc free form manufacturing features. by examining the geometrical and topological information of the work piece?s virtual model, the feature elements can be extracted and joined with the required information. this covers several important high speed cutting aspects in the cam system, like optimal technology and strategy suggestion, machining safety requirements and process stability of different strategies. using this approach the programming time to produce hsc appropriate tool paths is reduced significantly, while it is quality is secured.

Journal of Electrical Bioimpedance , 2010, DOI: 10.5617/jeb.111
Abstract: Miniaturized electrodes are introduced in life sciences in a great number and variety. They are often designed for a special purpose without the need of quantitative analysis, such as for detecting cells or water droplets in a fluid channel. Other developments aim in monitoring a single quantity in a process where all other factors held constant. To use miniaturized electrodes for quantitative measurements, their behavior should be known in detail and stable over time in order to allow a mathematical correction of the data measured. Here we show test procedures for evaluating macroscopic but also microscopic electrodes. The most important quality parameters for electrode systems used in life science are the electrode impedance, its stability, the useful frequency range as well as the limits for applied stimulus without driving the electrode system into a non-linear region of the current/voltage relation. Proper electrode design allows a bandwidth from 100 Hz up to some MHz for impedances ranging over decades from 50 up to several M .
A web service application to support distributed manufacturing

Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782012000200003
Abstract: manufacturing as an industrial activity that starts with the conceptual project and ends with proper material disposal or its reuse has evolved from a centralized to a distributed process. the several components of the process are distributed according to space and time. this evolution was possible due to the support of information technology, which allows manufacturing data management. however, this evolution happened in an independent way in each process phase, creating isolated solutions and consequently a high heterogeneity in data management. the development of a federative factory data management offers a solution of a transparent support to the users who need to obtain information from different proprietary systems. as an example of a service that demonstrates the possibility of federative management of manufacturing data in service oriented architecture within a heterogeneous and flexible environment, this article presents the estimated calculation of the manufacturing time for a complex surface.
Discurso, sujeito e mídia em Foucault: o véu na mulher mu ulmana = Discourse, subject and media in Foucault: the veil on muslim women

Acta Scientiarum : Language and Culture , 2011,
The aim of this work is to understand the discourses circulated on the “Veja online” magazine during the years of 1995 through 2005 on the way of being of the Muslim women, in view of the relationship between the verbal and the nonverbal, whose sign, at first, that appeared constant among them was the veil. For that, we make use of following Foucauldian notions, in respect to their understanding of the principle of the “subject”: a) “subject and power”, whose approach identifies the subject's power strategies; and b) “subject and the media”, given the influence of the media in the recognition of the discursive construction and the representation of identities. This research revealed as a result three separate statements of the subjects which are women wearing the veil in the media during this period: one showing it as a mother, another which saw it as a public and modern person, and yet another that saw its political dimension.

Abstract: epidemiology is the study of health and disease in populations, and of how these conditions are influenced by heredity, biology, physical environment, social environment, and personal behavior. there are many epidemiological studies in brazilian population but few about the influence of some risk factors in periodontal conditions. this cross-sectional study was performed to assess the influence of age, sex, plaque and smoking on periodontal disease in a population from bauru (brazil). data concerning periodontal status were collected from 380 patients in the university of s?o paulo (usp). measurements of periodontal pocket depths (ppd), clinical attachment levels (cal), plaque index (pi) of four sites in all teeth were registered. the influence of age, sex and smoking habits on the periodontal parameters were statistically evaluated using descriptive statistical and anova. the correlation between plaque and periodontal parameters was analyzed by pearson's correlation coefficient. the results showed an increase in the mean of periodontal destruction (ppd and cal) and a higher number of sites with severe losses with increasing age. correlation among percentage of sites with plaque and periodontal parameters (ppd and cal) were positive but weakly related. the male group showed significantly higher means of cal than the female. smokers had significantly higher ppd and cal means than non-smokers. aging, smoking habit, male sex, and percentage of sites with plaque were associated with a great increase of periodontal destruction, being important factors in the diagnosis of the periodontal disease in this brazilian population.
GEOMETRIC IDENTITIES IN STEREOLOGICAL PARTICLE ANALYSIS
Stephan K?tzer
Image Analysis and Stereology , 2006, DOI: 10.5566/ias.v25.p63-74
Abstract: The paper reviews recent findings about geometric identities in integral geometry and geometric tomography, and their statistical application to stereological particle analysis. Open questions are discussed. This survey can also serve as an introduction to modern stereological particle analysis for readers who are interested in the mathematical background of the new methods.
Congruences and prime-perspectivities in finite lattices
G. Gr?tzer
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: IIn a finite lattice, a congruence spreads from a prime interval to another by a sequence of congruence-perspectivities through \emph{intervals of arbitrary size}, by a 1955 result of J. Jakub\'ik. In this note, I introduce the concept of \emph{prime-perspectivity} and prove the Prime-projectivity Lemma: a congruence spreads from a prime interval to another by a sequence of prime-perspectivities through \emph{prime ntervals}. A planar semimodular lattice is \emph{slim} if it contains no $\mathsf{M}_3$ sublattice. I introduce the Swing Lemma, a very strong version of the Prime-projectivity Lemma for slim, planar, semimodular lattices.
