Maternidade: transforma??es na família e nas rela??es de gênero
Scavone, Lucila;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832001000100004
Abstract: this article makes a sociological reflection on the most striking changes in the patterns and experiences of contemporary motherhood, based on existing studies and research, trying to place the debate surrounding this process. it assumes that choosing motherhood is a modern phenomenon consolidated in the course of the twentieth century as a result of the progress of industrialization and urbanization. with increased access to formal education and professional training, women will tend to take up positions in public space, while remaining responsible for raising their children, which turns motherhood into a reflexive choice, enabled by modern contraception (and conception). this choice, however, is marked by the relations of class, race and ethnic background, and gender. the article concludes that we are currently experiencing a transition period toward a new model of family and motherhood, whose basis it the ideal of equally balanced parental responsibility that, despite some progress, is still far from having been attained.

Scavone, Lucila;
Revista Estudos Feministas , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-026X2008000200023
Abstract: the debates and feminist actions in favor of the legalization of abortion in brazil were characterized by progresses and regressions, and above all by countless political negotiations. from the omission of the word "abortion", in the mid-seventies, to the political choice of decriminalization and application of the cases foreseen by law, brazilian feminism has been marked by the choice of negotiation. the article concludes that these negotiations have succeeded politically but failed to reach society and heighten public awareness at a large scale.

Lucila Scavone
Concep o. Gênero. Reprodu o. This article deals with the debate about the reproduction rights in the Brazilian society, its peculiarities, advances and contradictions when facing three present problems of the Brazilian women: feminine sterilization, illegal practice of abortion and the development of new conceptive technologies. It also highlights that the generalized practice of feminine sterilization, the high incidence of illegal abortions in Brazil and the recent development of the New Contraceptive Technology, that put their lives at risk, show that there are no policies for reproductive health and demographic control in the country. The many paths that this debate created in the last decade are discussed when there is the necessity of redeeming the historic compromise of demographic and interventionist health policies. Keywords: Health. Conception. Gender. Reproduction.

Abstract: since the beginning of the history of modern psychopharmacology on the 40's, many advances were obtained on the understanding of the mechanism of action of psychotropic drugs. this article gives an overview of such advances, since the introduction of the early techniques, such as the measurement of amines by fluorescence and the receptor-binding studies up to the incorporation of sophisticated techniques such as the molecular, to study the post-receptor alterations, the genetic and the neuroimage techniques. these kind of studies might help to better understand the mechanisms of action of psychotropics, allowing the development of new therapeutic substances to regulate the alterations which underlie the psychiatric disorders.
