Gumboro disease: evaluation of serological and anatomopathological responses in vaccinated broiler chickens challenged with very virulent virus strain

Abstract: this paper describes the effects of a strong type of vaccine - moulthrop g603 o and an intermediate-plus type of vaccine - 228e o in meat-type chickens challenged with a very virulent strain of infectious bursal disease virus (vvibdv). blood samples and bursa of fabricius were taken weekly up to 42 days of age. it was concluded that bursa of fabricius weight, bursa weight:body weight ratio, body weight and antibody titer evaluated before and after challenge with vvibdv were not enough to consistently and conclusively differentiate or estimate the protection given by vaccination. quantitative evaluation of injury intensity and the number of altered lymphoid follicles revealed that moulthrop g603 caused moderate microscopic lesions in one out of seven birds vaccinated at 14 days of age, while 228e vaccine did not induce ibd-typical microscopic lesions in the bursa of fabricius. good protection against bursal microscopic lesions was obtained when a strong type of vaccine was used before challenging with vvibdv. it was concluded that quantitative evaluation of microscopic lesions might be useful to measure the injury induced by vaccinal ibdv, as well as the level of protection and/or immunosuppression induced by ibdv challenge in vaccinated and non-vaccinated chickens.

Abstract: this review is based on standards of treatment for diverticular disease, both classical and new ones due to cumulated videolaparoscopic experience. the sequential double videolaparoscopic procedure for acute diverticulitis is discussed along with data from other studies supporting this novel modality of surgical treatment.
Cross neutralizing antibodies in hamsters vaccinated with leptospiral bacterins produced with three serovars of serogroup Sejroe

Abstract: Three leptospiral bacterins, produced with different serovars of Serogroup Sejroe, namely the hardjo (bacterin A), wolffi (bacterin B) and guaricura (bacterin C), were evaluated in male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) by comparing the agglutinating and neutralizing antibodies titers using microscopic agglutination (MAT) and in vitro growth inhibition (GIT) tests. The immunization schedule was based on two 1.0 mL doses of non-diluted formalininactivated whole culture bacterin given through subcutaneous route with 10-day interval. The challenge was performed ten days after the second vaccine dose, when the animals were inoculated with 0.2 mL of non-inactivated cultures of each serovar through intraperitoneal route. On the 21st post-challenge day (PCD), all animals were bled and their sera were joined in pools (n=8) and tested by MAT and GIT. All vaccinated and control animals presented no clinical signs of leptospirosis after the challenge, but the serovar guaricura was isolated from the kidneys of control animals on the 21st PCD. The MAT results showed cross agglutinins between serovars hardjo and wolffi, and between wolffi and guaricura. The GIT results revealed the presence of cross neutralizing antibodies between serovars wolffi or guaricura against hardjo, wolffi and guaricura. It was found that the tested strain of serovar hardjo did not produce detectable levels of neutralizing antibodies, indicating its poor immunogenicity.

Abstract: background: crohn′s disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with difficult management. infliximab is a chimeric igg1 monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor and is indicated for refractory luminal and fistulization in crohn's disease. aim: to observe the outcome of 60 patients with diagnosis of crohn′s disease treated with infliximab. methods: prospective study with 60 patients with crohn′s disease in six years of observation. exclusion criteria were: clinical infection in at last three months; tuberculosis; intestinal occlusion; pregnancy. all patients were submitted to thorax x-rays, leukogram, tuberculosis cutaneous test. they were treated with infliximabe 5mg/kg each two months. they were divided into three groups according to the time of the diagnosis: 5 years, 6 to 10 and more than 10 years. the results were considered better, worse or unchanged. results: after the initial treatment, 76% of the patients achieved a response. at the first dose, the ones with 10 years and with associated abdominal surgery had good results and similar to the ones with less than 5 years with no operations. conclusion: the treatment with infliximab was effective and tolerable in the managing of symptoms in patients with active crohn′s disease, refractory to the conventional treatment and can be a reasonable approach to avoid the surgical treatment.

Infectious bursal disease virus: case report and experimental studies in vaccinated and unvaccinated SPF chickens and commercial broiler chicks

Abstract: ibdv gm 11 (simbios eleven-molecular group) has been detected since 1997 in many farms of commercial broilers and layers causing high mortality (2 to 15%) and severe macro and microscopic damage in cloacal bursae, spleen, thymus, kidney and liver. five serial passages of 2050/97-gm 11 ibdv sample by cam route in spf chicken's embryonated eggs did not elicit increased embryo mortality. high mortality (100%) of 21 day-old spf leghorn chickens and severe bursal and splenic lesions were seen from 24 up to 48 hours after eye-drop inoculation of 2050/97 strain (50 ml of 10-2 dilution of 10% bursae homogenate). mortality was not detected when vaccinated spf and broiler chickens were inoculated. one dead bird was found among ten challenged unvaccinated broilers. variations in the intensity of cloacal bursae injury and spleen response were found between unvaccinated and vaccinated broiler chickens. ibdv antibodies were detected by elisa test in almost all vaccinated spf chickens before challenge while low number of commercial vaccinated and unvaccinated broilers were serologically positive (0 to 3 birds in 18). increasing ibdv antibody titers were detected after challenge with 2050/97 strain and highest gmts were found in broilers. it was concluded that 2050/97 strain is a highly virulent ibdv and spf leghorn chickens immunized with bv8 intermediate vaccine strain were resistant to the challenge. increasing susceptibility was found from experimental groups of unvaccinated broilers to vaccinated broilers and to unvaccinated spf birds. it is discussed that passive immunity was involved in the rate of protection of challenged unvaccinated broiler and in the immune response impairment after vaccination of broilers chicks. the use of a constant virus suspension with known potency to challenge the experimental birds was suitable to evaluate vaccination efficacy. evaluation of bursal and splenic responses at early and delayed time after challenge were useful to estimate vaccination
Avalia o radiográfica do espa o disponível para os terceiros molares superiores

Abstract: A quantidade óssea no túber da maxila está intimamente ligada com a erup o dos terceiros molares superiores. O principal objetivo desta pesquisa é verificar o espa o disponível no arco para a erup o dos terceiros molares superiores. A amostra foi composta por 50 telerradiografias em norma lateral, com média de 15 anos de idade (varia o de12 a 18 anos). O método proposto avaliou a distancia da face distal dos segundos molares superiores até o fim da tuberosidade da maxila, que também coincide com o processo alveolar da maxila, assim sendo, teremos o espa o disponível para a erup o dos terceiros molares superiores. Pode-se observar que existe uma falta de espa o para a correta irrup o dos terceiros molares superiores, uma vez que o espa o disponível médio é de 6,18mm e o espa o requerido médio é de 9,42mm. A discrepancia média para a amostra estudada, no momento da obten o das telerradiografias em norma lateral foi negativa -3,24mm. A regi o do túber é pobre em espa o para erup o dos terceiros molares superiores.
Cacha?a distillation investigated on the basis of model systems

Abstract: this work reports experimental tests using commercial spirits that were diluted and had their initial composition modified in order to better measure the distillation behavior of selected minor compounds of importance for the quality of alcoholic beverages. such compounds were added to the commercial cacha?a and the corresponding model wine, obtained after the spirits' dilution, was distilled. in this way a more precise distillation profile could be determined for those minor compounds. the alembic heating was performed by electrical resistance and the corresponding heat transfer coefficient was determined by analyzing the thermal behavior of the still during the distillations. a simulation algorithm was developed, including the mass and enthalpy balances as well as the heat transfer flux to the boiling wine. good agreement between experimental and simulated results was obtained for the distillate rate, alcoholic graduation, temperature and most minor component profiles.

Abstract: aim: the main purposes of this study were to analyze the literature related to a relevant clinic aspect, the dental arch form, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the original form in order to obtain stability after the orthodontic treatment, as well as to evaluate the methods used for establishing the dental arch form and the arch form diagrams proposed by many authors. results and conclusions: it was verified that there is some controversy regarding the indication of an ideal average form and the selection of an individualized form from diagrams which provide varied formats for the dental arch. however, some progress was observed in the methodologies applied in recent studies, which will possibly provide more accuracy in arch form determination in the near future.
Evaluation of the space available for eruption of maxillary second and third molars after distalization of maxillary first molars

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate cephalometrically the space available for eruption of maxillary second and third molars in the region of the maxillary tuberosity after distalization of maxillary permanent first molars.Material and methods: The sample consisted of 38 right lateral cephalograms obtained from 19 Brazilian patients,of Caucasian and African descent, with average age of 9 years and 5 months.Cephalograms were taken before and after distalization of maxillary permanent first molars. The space from the end of the maxillary tuberosity to the distal aspect of the maxillary permanent first molar was evaluated.Student’s t test was applied for the statistical analysis,and the correlation between space and angulation was analyzed by the Pearson correlation coefficient.Results and conclusion:The corresponding space between the distal aspect of maxillary permanent first molars and the end of the maxillary tuberosity, before and after distalization,is not enough for eruption of the maxillary second and third molars.The crowns revealed distal angulation before and after distalization.The correlation of angulation of crowns of maxillary second and third molars and the space for eruption revealed that the greater the distal angulation of crowns,the smaller will be the space available for eruption.
