Applications of Compressed Sensing in Communications Networks

Abstract: This paper presents a tutorial for CS applications in communications networks. The Shannon's sampling theorem states that to recover a signal, the sampling rate must be as least the Nyquist rate. Compressed sensing (CS) is based on the surprising fact that to recover a signal that is sparse in certain representations, one can sample at the rate far below the Nyquist rate. Since its inception in 2006, CS attracted much interest in the research community and found wide-ranging applications from astronomy, biology, communications, image and video processing, medicine, to radar. CS also found successful applications in communications networks. CS was applied in the detection and estimation of wireless signals, source coding, multi-access channels, data collection in sensor networks, and network monitoring, etc. In many cases, CS was shown to bring performance gains on the order of 10X. We believe this is just the beginning of CS applications in communications networks, and the future will see even more fruitful applications of CS in our field.

Abstract: River Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers of the India. It originates from Yamunotri glaciers in the lower Himalayas at an elevation of approximately 6387 meters. The barrages formed on the river are playing a major role in escalating the river pollution. River can be divided into five segments on the bases of hydro-logical and ecological conditions. Water quality of only one segment (Himalayan segment) meets the river water quality standards. Normally no water is allowed to flow downstream of the Himalayan segment (Te-jewala barrage) especially in the summer and winter seasons to fulfill the demand of water of the surround-ing area. Whatever water flows in the downstream of the Tajewala barrage is the untreated or partially treated domestic and Industrial wastewater contributed through various drains. The discharge of untreated domestic and industrial effluents have severely affected the quality of Yamuna River and now it falls under the category E, which makes it fit only for recreation and industrial cooling, completely ruling out the possi-bility for underwater life and domestic supply. Almost every year mass death of fishes is reported. Pollution levels in the Yamuna River have risen. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) load has increased by 2.5 times between 1980 and 2005: From 117 tonnes per day (TDP) in 1980 to 276 TDP in 2005. The Yamuna has been reduced to a small stream, draining industrial effluents, sewage, dirt and other toxic substances. There is an urgent need to take stringent measures to alleviate these pollution loads and save an ailing river.
Measuring Public School Competition from Private Schools: A Gravity-Based Index  [PDF]

Abstract: This research develops a gravity-based index of public school competition from private schools within local markets. Proponents of educational reform often call for policies to increase competition between schools. A major hurdle for researchers examining this issue is to determine a workable definition of “competition” by which they can measure the degree of competition within local markets. This study addresses this challenge by developing a school competition index for public schools in the Jackson metropolitan area of Mississippi, USA that considers the enrollments in public schools and the enrollments in their neighboring private schools, as well as the distances between them. The school competition index reveals the degree of competition for each public school based on its spatial location relative to peer private schools operating within its service area. This methodology can be useful for evaluating competition in other markets and redefining the traditional market structure.

Abstract:

A major environmental concern due to dispersal of industrial and urban wastes generated by human activities is the contamination of soil. The release of heavy metals into the terrestrial ecosystem is a major problem. Accumulation of heavy metals in environment and particularly in soil is a serious environmental concern, as the accumulated heavy metal ions can find their way into living organisms via contamination of ground water or food chain. This praxis urgently requires and demands governmental regulations in India. Two samples of sludge were collected from Banthar Industrial Pollution Control Company (BIPCC), UP State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC), Leather Technology Park, Banthar, Unnao, India. In the present study, the phytoremediation potential of Catharanthus roseus, a valued medicinal plant, with respect to chromium has been analyzed. C. roseus was shown to absorb up to about 38% of the amount of Cr present in primary and secondary sludge amended soil through roots and accumulate it to about 22% in leaves. Effect of chromium concentration on the status of antioxidant enzyme peroxidase (POD) and detoxification enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) from C. roseus leaves was also observed and determined. Increased expressions of POD and GST were observed on native PAGE under stress conditions as compared to control. C. roseus can well tolerate low amounts of chromium (and accumulate it to about 22% in leaves) and can, thus, prove useful in the reclamation and remediation of chromium contaminated soil and land.

Abstract: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is a relentlessly progressive, fatal disease. Progression of the disease results 3 - 5 years after diagnosis, often from respiratory failure. The diaphragm pacing system (DPS) is a device that stimulates the diaphragm to maximally contract so patients can breathe more effectively. It has been used in patients with neurologic injuries such as spinal cord injury and ALS. From an anesthetic perspective, both the surgery and the patient population present several unique challenges. This case series describes three patients with ALS who had the diaphragmatic pacemaker placed and the anesthetic management during those surgeries.

Abstract: Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by platelet function abnormalities and oculocutaneous albinism. Other systemic manifestations of the disease include pulmonary fibrosis, granulomatous colitis, impaired renal function, and cardiomyopathy. Due to the systemic extent of the disease, HPS has multiple anesthetic concerns and requires a detailed preoperative evaluation and close perioperative monitoring.

Abstract: The flexible wearable chair is like a light weight mobile exoskeleton that allows people to sit any-where in any working position. The traditional chair is difficult to move to different working locations due to its large size, heavy weight (~5 - 7 kg) and rigid structure and thus, they are inappropriate for workplaces where enough space is not available. Flexible wearable chair has a gross weight of 3 kg as it utilizes light-weight aluminium alloy members. Unlike the traditional chair, it consists of kinematic pairs which enable taking halts between continuous movements at any working position and thus, it is capable of reducing the risk of the physical musculoskeletal disorder substantially among workers. The objective of this paper is to focus on the mechanical design and finite element analysis (FEA) of the mechanism using ANSYS software. In the present work, all the parts of the mechanism are designed under static load condition. The results of the analysis indicate that flexible wearable chair satisfies equilibrium and stability criterion and is capable of reducing fatigue during working in an assembly line/factory.
Accounting Conservatism: Evidence from Indian Markets  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper establishes existence of conditional conservatism in accounting practices of Indian corporate. It estimates firm-year measure of accounting conservatism (C-score). This study validates the C-score, asymmetric timeliness measure, and establishes monotonicity of C-scores. The paper also focuses on the study of the empirical properties of C-score and finds positive association of C-score decile ranks with decile wise Leverage and Variability. The C-score decile ranking is negatively associated with Size, Age, Market-to-Book Value ratio, Return on Assets and Non-Operating Accruals. Through this study, the forecasting capability of C-scores is established. C-scores can predict conditional conservatism up to two years ahead. This study is expected to play an important role in furtherance of research in this area in the Indian context.

Abstract: In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to study the effect of pollutant and virus induced disease on single species animal population and its essential mathematical features are analyzed. It is observed that the susceptible population does not vanish when it is only under the effect of infection but in the polluted environment, it can go to extinction. Also, it has been observed that the replication threshold obtained, increases on account of pollutant concentration consequently decreasing the susceptible population. Further persistence results for the proposed model are obtained and the condition for the existence of the Hopf-bifurcation is derived. Finally, numerical simulation in support of analytical results is carried out.

Abstract: A complex motion and complex momentum due to relativistic phenomenon has been deduced in this paper. This procedure leads to explain the generation of a field which is the result of energy momentum complexity (tensor). In this work, a form of complex momentum of photon has been derived. This momentum reveals the construction of electromagnetic field. These procedures have been applied to explain the electromagnetic field of fundamental charged particle and leads to the assumption of fundamental charge. In this works trial would be made to derive a relation between gravitational field and electromagnetic field.
