Educa??o & Sociedade , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302003000400013
Abstract: discussed in this article is the relevance of recurring psycho-pedagogical problems originated inside and outside formal education, as well as the dubious intention to regularize psycho-pedagogy as yet another profession within the educational sphere. emphasized here is the question of regularizing the university professions in brazil and the varied roots of psycho-pedagogy from the period immediately following the second world war onward.
O aluno sob medida: os testes psicológicos e educacionais como tecnologia
Sass, Odair;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302011000400005
Abstract: this paper discusses the relationship between psychology and statistics in the field of education. it shows that such relation is not limited to the explanation of the inexorable scientific progress. rather, it cannot be dissociated from the objective achievement of technological rationality, which is characteristic of the industrial and administered society. this perspective is first explored through psychotechnics, using an important moment of the development of the intelligence concept exemplified by the bi-factorial theory of spearman. then, the text resorts to the application of psychological and educational tests in brazilian primary schools, as promoted by two educators, isaias alves and louren?o filho.

Impact of the directions of investment on the production and economical effects of farms in the Bydgoszcz sub-region
Roman Sass
Journal of Agribusiness and Rural Development , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of the direction of investment on selected production and economical effects of farms in the Bydgoszcz sub-region. The data collected by the Agricultural Advisory Centre in Minikowo for 1994- -2007 concerning the opinions issued for the farmers applying for preferential loans con-stituted the basic source of information. Moreover, the results of FADN accountancy were also used. 220 farms that made use of preferential loans and uninterruptedly ran accoun-tancy in 2004-2008 were covered by the analysis. Deferred results of investments initiated in 1994were assessed. The conducted studies do not make it possible to determine precisely the impact of the investment’s direction on the production and economical effects of farms, as the separated groups of farms are not uniform from the point of view of the purpose of the studies.
Is climate change causing increased rockfall frequency in Austria?
O. Sass,M. Oberlechner
Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) & Discussions (NHESSD) , 2012, DOI: 10.5194/nhess-12-3209-2012
Abstract: Potentially, increasing rockfall hazards triggered by climate change are a major concern expressed both in scientific and non-scientific media. An existing rockfall inventory for Austria including 252 events from ca. 1900 to 2010, mainly from non-permafrost areas, was analysed. The correlation of events with temperatures is very weak and no increase of rockfall frequency during warmer periods was observed. The peak of rockfall activity is in spring, whereas in recent decades a secondary summer maximum appeared in the records. A possible reason for this shift is reduced rockfall activity in spring due to warmer winters. We conclude that a premature warning of increasing rockfall hazard, especially below the permafrost limit, is not supported by the existing data.
Dependência para alimentar-se e consumo alimentar em idosos hospitalizados Dependencia para alimentarse y consumo alimentario en ancianos hospitalizados Dependence to feed itself and food consumption in hospitalized elderly
Arethusa Sass,Sonia Silva Marcon
The objective of the study was to verify the association of food intake and the dependence to be fed in hospitalized elderly individuals who were interviewed in the first 24 hours after admission to a general hospital. Participated in the research 75 individuals average 70.9 years old, being 58.7% male and 17.3% showing dependence to be fed. There was no evident association between dependence to be fed and the intake of energetic and muscle building food, but there was an association with regulator food such as garlic and onion (p=0.00) and water (p=0.04). The need of nutritional orientation to the caretakers is suggested, taking into consideration that the feeding dependence is associated to a low intake of water among elderly individuals.
Infantile Sandhoff’s disease
K Sass, S Wiebe, E Lemire
South African Journal of Radiology , 2009,
Abstract: Sandhoff ’s disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of sphingolipid metabolism that results from deficiency of the lysosomal enzymes, β-hexosaminidase A and B. The resultant accumulation of GM2 ganglioside within both grey matter nuclei and myelin sheaths of the white matter results in eventual severe neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Disease progression is rapid, resulting in early death. Currently, there is no curative treatment, with therapy remaining primarily supportive. This case report is of a 13-month-old aboriginal Canadian boy who was referred for further investigations related to global developmental delay and loss of developmental milestones, at which time the diagnosis was discovered.
Sharing Research Findings with Research Participants and Communities
LE Ferris,A Sass-Kortsak
International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: In occupational and environmental health research, individual, group and community research participants have a unique and vested interest in the research findings. The ethical principles of autonomy, non-maleficence and beneficence are helpful in considering the ethical issues in the disclosure of research findings in occupational and environmental health research. Researchers need to include stakeholders, such as groups and communities, in these discussions and in planning for the dissemination of research findings. These discussions need to occur early in the research process.
The lantibiotic mersacidin is a strong inducer of the cell wall stress response of Staphylococcus aureus

BMC Microbiology , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2180-8-186
Abstract: Here, we studied the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of mersacidin. Transcriptional data revealed an extensive induction of the cell wall stress response, which is partly controlled by the two-component regulatory system VraSR. In contrast to other cell wall-active antibiotics such as vancomycin, very low concentrations of mersacidin (0.15 × MIC) were sufficient for induction. Interestingly, the cell wall stress response was equally induced in vancomycin intermediately resistant S. aureus (VISA) and in a highly susceptible strain. Since the transcription of the VraDE ABC transporter genes was induced up to 1700-fold in our experiments, we analyzed the role of VraDE in the response to mersacidin. However, the deletion of the vraE gene did not result in an increased susceptibility to mersacidin compared to the wild type strain. Moreover, the efficacy of mersacidin was not affected by an increased cell wall thickness, which is part of the VISA-type resistance mechanism and functions by trapping the vancomycin molecules in the cell wall before they reach lipid II. Therefore, the relatively higher concentration of mersacidin at the membrane might explain why mersacidin is such a strong inducer of VraSR compared to vancomycin. In conclusion, mersacidin appears to be a strong inducer of the cell wall stress response of S. aureus at very low concentrations, which reflects its general mode of action as a cell wall-active peptide as well as its use of a unique target site on lipid II. Additionally, mersacidin does not seem to be a substrate for the resistance transporter VraDE.Lantibiotics form a particular group among the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and are characterized by unique structural features. These result from extensive posttranslational modifications that yield the ring forming thioether amino acids lanthionine and/or 3-methyllanthionine. The ring structures contribute to enhanced resistance towards proteolysis [1] a
