Reflections about reviewers of the scientific papers in Physical Education

Abstract: This point of view emerged from experience in contribution both as reviewer and author in papers submitted to journals indexed in Physical Education. Some considerations were made: who are the reviewers? What is the role of a reviewer and his contribution to science and society? What is the feedback towards the authors? Therefore, I classified the reviewers as those who "knows everything", "archaic", "owners of the area" and "already that". These suggestions aim to contribute to people who give themselves as a reviewer, for our field of knowledge helps Science and Society.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to analyze the judo specific tests present in the literature, including the variables obtained from these and their use as performance markers in judo matches. to develop of this study we considered original articles indexed from 1990 to 2011, using electronic data bases scopus?, scielo?, sciencedirect? (elsevier) and pubmed?. the keywords used for research were: judo, performance, aptitude tests and their combinations. after analyzing the articles deemed eligible, we elected four tests (studies) that considered all criteria: a) special judo fitness test (sjft), b) endurance test of azevedo et al. (2007), c) uchikomi fitness test - uft and d) santos test. all tests have the judo motor skills for the identification of physiological variables, however, its use depends of the researcher's purpose. the sjft can be used for the identification of anaerobic and aerobic capacity as well as being able to induce glycolytic and aerobic demand similar in the judo match. the azevedo et al. endurance test needs a validation process based in the gold-standard to maximal lactate steady state to be a reliable tool in the obtain the aerobic capacity. the uft and the santos test reproduce some judo match characteristics, but still need more original studies to be considered as performance markers.

Abstract: this study investigated the association between judges' scores and the variables that represent judging criteria of surfing events. a total of 164 waves ridden by 21 international surfers were recorded and analyzed in two stages of the brazilian asp world tour (2007 and 2010). the following tests were used for descriptive analysis of data: the kolmogorov-smirnov and the student t test, one-way anova, the tukey post-hoc test and pearson correlation analysis (p<0.05). significant differences were found between the scores of waves with bad, average and exceptional take-offs (p<0.05) and with controlled exit, fall in the main section of the wave (msw) and after the msw (p<0.001). there was a significant correlation (p<0.05) between wave scores and the following variables: frequency of imbalance in the maneuvers (r=-0.30), percentage of maneuvers in the critical section of the wave (r=0.68), variety of maneuvers (r=0.62), frequency of carving (r=0.51), re-entry (r=0.43), floater (r=0.23) and cut-back (r=0.27) maneuvers, length of ride (r=0.76) and total frequency of maneuvers (r=0.79) for the asp world tour 2007; percentage of maneuvers in the critical section of the wave (r=0.34), variety of maneuvers (r=0.70), frequency of carving (r=0.46), re-entry (r=0.51), cut-back (r=0.30) and aerial maneuvers (r=0.30), length of ride (r=0.71) and total frequency of maneuvers (r=0.75) for the asp world tour 2010. the results showed that all surfing criteria used by judges in this study correlated significantly with scores in the asp world tour 2007 and 2010, except for frequency of imbalances in the second competition.
Valores de impacto no corpo do judoca ao ser projetado pela técnica Ippon-Seoi-Nage Magnitude and duration of the impact generated on the athletes' body during training in Ippon-Seoi-Nage judo technique

Abstract: Este estudo exploratório objetivou analisar as magnitudes e o tempo de dura o dos impactos gerados em diferentes regi es corpo do judoca projetado pela técnica Ippon-Seoi-Nage. Participaram dois judocas faixas pretas, sendo tori (judoca que projeta) com 75 kg e 19 anos de prática, e o uke (judoca que cai) com 72 kg e 15 anos de prática. Foi utilizado um aceler metro triaxial 4321 da Brüel & Kjaer fixado no punho, quadril e tornozelo do uke. Os dados foram coletados em ambiente laboratorial, sendo realizadas 10 quedas para cada articula o investigada, totalizando 30 quedas. Os maiores valores de impacto ocorreram no punho no eixo vertical (351.95 g) e os menores valores no quadril no eixo antero-posterior (5.18 g); os tempos de dura o dos impactos foram maiores no quadril no eixo vertical ( .58 s) n o havendo diferen a entre o punho e o tornozelo. Considerando os altos valores de impacto encontrados, bem como o elevado número de repeti o de quedas por treino no jud , sugere-se que sejam revistas as metodologias de práticas e o tipo de tatame utilizado, objetivando minimizar os possíveis efeitos deletérios dos impactos ao organismo dos judocas em longo prazo. This exploratory study aimed to analyse the magnitude and duration of the impact generated on the athletes' body during training in Ippon-Seoi-Nage judo technique. Two black belt judo athletes were studied, the tori (the thrower) weighting 75 kg and having 19 years of practice, and the uke (the thrown) weighting 72 kg and having 15 years of practice. A Bruel & Kjaer 4321 Accelerometer Triaxial, fastened to the fist, hip and ankle of the uke, was used. Data were collected in the laboratory. Ten falls were performed for each of the three articulations investigated. The largest impact values were observed for the fist in the vertical axis (351.95 g) and the smallest values were for the hip anterior posterior axis (5.18g). Impact duration times were greater in the hip vertical axis (.58 s) with no differences for the impact on fist and ankle. Considering these high impact values as well as the high frequency of falls during judo training, it is suggested a reevalua-tion of this training pattern and the sort of tatami adopted, in order to decrease the resulting harmful effects over the time.

Factors affecting injuries to amateur volleyball players volleyball athletes

Abstract: The objective of this diagnostic study was to evaluate the number of impacts per training session undergone by two amateur volleyball teams while performing spikes and blocks, and to relate the number of impacts to the number of injuries they suffered over the previous two years. The study recruited 24 athletes from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina first teams, 12 from the men’s and 12 from the women’s volleyball teams, sampled intentionally. Data were collected using a questionnaire, a video camera and assessment sheets fi lled out by a talent scout. Data were collected at the practice ground and presented in the form of descriptive statistics in means, standard deviations and simple frequencies and inferential statistics were applied in the form of Pearson’s correlation and Student’s t test, both to p≤0.05. The results allowed for the conclusions that both teams exhibited similar duration of practice and that their training characteristics were similar in terms of duration and frequency. The ankles were most often affected by injuries and blocks were the most common causative mechanisms of injuries in both teams. The majority of athletes use protective equipment and the great majority underwent physiotherapy once injured. The number of impacts per training session, including spike and block jumps, was low when compared with high level teams. It appears that the number of impacts did not affect the number of injuries in either team. The two teams did not differ either in terms of the number of injuries or the number of impacts per training session. RESUMO Este estudo diagnóstico teve como objetivo avaliar o número de repeti es de impacto por treino, em atletas de duas equipes amadoras de voleibol, realizando cortadas e bloqueios, bem como relacionar o número de impactos com o número de les es sofridas pelos mesmos nos últimos dois anos. Participaram do estudo 24 atletas titulares, sendo 12 da equipe feminina e 12 da equipe masculina de voleibol da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, escolhidas de forma intencional. Como instrumento de medida, foi utilizado um questionário, uma filmadora e fi chas de avalia o de escalte técnico. Os dados foram coletados no local de prática e tratados mediante a estatística descritiva em termos de média, desvio padr o e freqüência simples e com a estatística inferencial, por meio da correla o de Pearson e teste “t” de Student, ambos a p≤0,05. Magnitude of lower limb impact and kinematics in the handball jump throw

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate kinematic characteristics and impact of the handball jump throw. Nine male athletes of the university team participated of this study. A tri-axial accelerometer was used for identify the impact magnitude of the lower limb and the three-dimensional analysis system DMAS 5.0 was used for the analysis knee and hip angle of the jump throw. The kinematic and accelerometry dates were simultaneously collection. Reflective markers were placed on the anatomic landmarks of the athletes and the accelerometer was placed on the knee and ankle. For the date analyses, descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and Pearson correlate were used. The level of significance was set at 5% for all tests. The biggest impact magnitudes were acquired of the anterior-posterior axle on the ankle joint (58.81 g). Knee and hip angle in the contact with ground were lesser than knee and hip angle in the maximum flexion of the lower limb (27.24o and 33.75o for knee and 25.77o and 26.77o for hip), respectively. The impact magnitude in the knee of the anterior-posterior axle showed inverse correlate with the knee (r= -0.64; p= 0.05) and hip angle (r= -0.77; p= 0.01) in contact with ground. From results can be conclude that, although this team to be amateur, is necessary improvement of jump throw technique to decrease of cumulative effects of overload by long time of training.
Les?es e desvios posturais na prática de futebol em jogadores jovens

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of injuries, deviations in postural alignment, and possible associations between injuries and postural deviations in soccer players. twenty-one male professional soccer players, aged 17 to 19 years old, were assessed as to anthropometric features, playing position, length and frequency of soccer practice, and history of injuries linked to soccer practicing. athletes were divided into two groups: g1 made up by 15 players who had suffered soccer-related injuries; and g2 composed by 6 players with no such injuries. postural alignment was assessed using a specific protocol. both groups showed changes in body alignment; the greatest postural deviations found in both groups were scapulae asymmetry, head horizontal deviation and pelvis deviation. as to g1 injuries, the most common were in ankles (35%) and knees (23%). though no association could be found between postural deviations and injuries, high incidence of both was found, thus suggesting the need to prevention programs in soccer players training.

Abstract: this study evaluated force and velocity parameters of vertical jump performance in countermovement jump (cmj) and squat jump (sj) and compared results for sprint runners and volleyball players. twenty-four male athletes (12 regional/national-level sprint runners and 12 national-level volleyball players) performed cmj and sj on a force platform. the following variables were analyzed: jump performance (jump height and power), peak velocity (pv), absolute and relative maximum force (mf), rate of force development (rfd,) and time to reach maximum force (tmf). in cmj, jump height was correlated with pv (r=0.97) and normalized mf (r=0.47), whereas jump power was significantly correlated with all variables, except mf (r=0.12). in sj, pv and normalized mf were significantly correlated with jump height (r=0.95 and r=0.51) and power (r=0.80 and r=0.87). in addition, tmf was inversely correlated with power (r=-0.49). runners had higher performance variables (height and power), normalized mf and pv than volleyball players in both cmj and sj. velocity and maximum force were the main determinants of height and power in the two types of vertical jumps. however, explosive force (rfd and tmf) was also important for power production in vertical jumps. runners had a better vertical jump performance than volleyball players.
